In honor of next years long awaited Blu-ray release,
I decided to make this post about one of my top 10 favorite films of all time.
This movie has everything and is one of the most mind bending experiences I’ve ever endured.
Darren Aronofsky actually bought the rights to this film. so he could recreate certain scenes in his film Black Swan. And you can definitely see Satoshi Kons influence in other works of his and tons of filmmakers work all around, in general.
Please, please do yourself a favor and watch this crazy, amazing film.
Preferably twice so you can take in the whole package.

I've always been a fan of animation, and I'm particularly interested in Japanese animation or anime. One of the more well-known and loved movie that I have just gotten around to watching is the late Satoshi Kon's directorial debut Perfect Blue (1999). Perfect Blue follows the horrors and gradual mental deterioration of Mima Kirigoe as she retires from being an idol and pursue a career in acting. Her psychological decline is brought upon by her inability to truly separate her public persona and her personal self, what her managers and her fans are asking of her against what she really wants for herself. The presence of the stalker Me-Mania (a combination of Mima and 'mania') is both the source of the invasion of Mima's privacy and acts as a representation on the pressure for an individual to conform to societal norms; in Perfect Blue's case, it's for Mima to continue presenting herself as an innocent, eager-to-please idol that Me-Mania first "fell in love" with, rather than transform into becoming a more mature and distant actress willing to enact sexually provocative scenes. Additionally, the film depicts very disturbing scenes but refuses to allow the audience to derive pleasure from it, forcing the audience to be just as afraid, confused and horrified as Mima is.
Therefore, I think that Perfect Blue is an excellent film that artistically and sympathetically depicts and explores the power of societal pressure and how it can negatively influence our agency and sense of self.
