We’re giving away a copy of The Range of Light: Night & Day on the John Muir Trail — a 96 page hardcover book produced by @darkskyphoto in 2015 featuring mostly nighttime and sunset photography along the JMT, as well as some daytime shots. To win the book, simply comment your favorite High Sierra pass, trail, or lake, and tag a person you want to hike there with! A winner will be chosen on Friday — good luck!
I am still a little shaken from my mountain lion encounter. And then hearing it scream in the dead of night made my skin crawl like never before. To the point that I actually wanted to quit the PCT. But as I head back to trail, I am trying to remember that my fear is not bigger than my dreams. This photo is from one of my favorite nights on trail and looking at it helps me remember why this trail means so much to me.
One thousand three hundred and twenty five miles walked with my home and all the possessions I need on my back. I'm halfway to Canada. I feel alot of excitement, pure love for this journey, eagerness and a hunger for the second half, and sadness that it's half over! It's town day today so that means lots of food and the first shower and laundry in 12 days 😳
Midpoint. Halfway...where? Where am I going with my life? Like a pack of wolves my emotions fight each other. What am I even doing here? Anxiety, sadness and anger, but also joy, happiness and peace. Who am I? They flow over me in a overwhelming intensity. Who do I want to be? I'm drowning.
Stop. Breathe. I'm here. I have arrived, I'm home. Trust the journey. One more step and I'm hiking again, wondering where this trail will lead me.
Thanks to @lauren_dlv for reminding me who I am and that I don't have to look for purpose or meaning. It's been here with me since the very first step.
Around California and Oregon the bush fire season has started and sometime can contribute on creating sunsets like this one at Mt Shasta, however, everyone has to remain diligent to prevent catastrophic consequences.
ATM in south Oregon the fire is burning on and near the Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District of Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, PCT is also closed between Bybee Camp (mile 1828.5) and Red Cone Camp (mile 1835.5) closure will likely remain in place at least through a significant part of the 2018 season.
The PCT is OPEN again on Mt. Jefferson after the Whitewater Fire.

Pinto and I were lucky enough to join this awesome group of hikers as we made our way on the PCT from Donner Pass to Squaw Valley. It takes a lot of snow to bend a tree like that! #hike#pct#sierra#tree#nature#california#tahoe
Fires miles away has been filling up the sky around us with smoke for the last week. It’s no fun having all your views being washed out, however the smoke does make for great sunset colors in the sky. #pct#pctig#pct2018
Self Discipline. So unfamiliar with this concept, I could not even spell it. Eating well, exercising, patience, business...these are things that I practice improving, but feel so much more potential to be reached. Being relatively content where I am, it's difficult to implement the discipline to elevate to the next level of awesome.⠀
Find myself often asking, what's the point, what I'm doing now is working fairly well. If it's not broken don't fix it. Terrible way of though, and getting it out on this post right now is making it even more clear to me what a lazy slug I'm being by thinking this way.⠀
I want the best for myself, so I'm making today the turning point. Join me?⠀
