I’d only ever seen giant cacti in Hollywood Westerns, that is, until my first surf trip down to deeper Baja. It was such a joy to see that such improbable plants exist, to once again be reminded how wondrous this planet of ours is! These (well dusted) cardón specimens, flanking Greg Long’s not insignificant high top 4x4 camper, are probably 10, perhaps 12 metres, some reportedly reach 18 metres, or nigh on 60ft in height! Well adapted to their spartan environment, being able to survive with virtually no soil, they rely on a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen fixing fungi and bacteria. It really is remarkable that something that size could flourish in a desert!
We moved into the van a little over a week ago. It has been an intense time and it's teaching us quite a few life lessons. Here are some of the challenges we've been facing: - Technical problems. We're out of gas - despite having tried at least 15 different places in two countries, driving around like mad people, we haven't been able to find somebody willing to fill our gas tank! 😬 At the same time our heater is having problems with the temperature control 🙉 - not very desireable when heading towards #patagonia and the #andes mountains to ski 😅 Very frustrating, but we're learning to be patient.. - Confined space: Everyday tasks take a lot longer than anticipated, when everything in the cupboards is stacked on top of each other and there is such little surface to put stuff down on! I have felt this mostly when cooking, because I've been known to be a very messy cook and leaving a huge chaos in the kitchen, not unlike a hurricane 😅 not possible anymore! - Daily routine: because everything takes a lot longer than we're used to, we're having much less time for doing / seeing stuff than we anticipated. And we're constantly going to bed too late and then sleeping through half the next day. @rahel.out.and.about and I are both quite ambitious people, so this has been pretty frustrating and stressful for us. I think the lesson here is to be patient with ourselves and lower our expectations 🙏
I'm now starting to understand why #vanlife isn't as easy as instagram makes it out to be! But it is very rewarding at the same time and we're already enjoying some of it's perks. Like beeing able to park your home anywhere you damn feel like and brew a nice cup of coffee ☕ (if there's gas 😂) #vanbueb#homeiswhereyouparkit#ontheroad#panamericana#homeonwheels#southamerica
The Crossing. Though vehicles cross this bridge everyday, yet we had to give this crossing some thought given the loading weight of the rover. The bridge swirled under the moving weight of the truck, as did our hearts as shit completely froze ! This is indeed a marvel of colonial era British civil engineering. #bridges#gilgit#shandurpolofestival#patagonia#rangerover#dangerousbridges
