I passed my first EOR! For those of you that are wondering what is an EOR? It’s the end of rotation exam! We have one after each rotation with the exception of our elective choice.
How did I study for this rotation?
1. PANCE PREP PEARLS - my go to! I also used it through out didactic year and it’s never failed me.
2. FIRST AID for the Psychiatry Clerkship - easy read! This book also had mnemonics that I found super helpful!
3. ROSH Review - doing practice question really helps solidify everything!
4. Exam Master - my school used this program for our exams during didactic year. We luckily still have access to it and was able to use it for practice questions.

I basically read through all diseases that were on the PAEA topic list for psychiatry! Once I felt I knew most of the information, I put my knowledge to test! I did as many questions as I could. The psychiatry topic list is on the shorter side, so personally I only studied around 2 hours a night.
For me, using highlighters and re-writing some stuff helps the information “stick” better. Whats you favorite way to study? .

Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall - F. Scott Fitzgerald
🍂
Still recovering from a week of flu symptoms but I'm glad it was during reading week! Feeling a little scattered and worried about not being organized enough for the next few weeks, so I mustered a little energy I had to take a nice crunchy walk. After a week of quarantine, it felt nice to get some fresh cool air and reset.

Monday wedding memory vibes 🎂 So grateful to have the day off today. I even got to sit down and look at some of these photos and videos from last year. Still haven’t had to time to order an album though 💁🏼‍♀️ In less than a month we get to enjoy this cake again! #physicianassistant #wedding#worklifebalance #newlyweds#weddingcake#adamsandler#cakecutting #stayhumble #PAlife
Last week we evacuated to save our lives and now we are learning to save real lives 💉💊👩🏻‍⚕️
•

•
Today we had a 5 hour ACLS training course, and its crazy to think all our scenerios were in the “Emergency Room” during this past hurricane that just hit our city.
We had the chance to practice intubation, assess EKG rhythms, push antiarrhitmics and other medications, resusitate patients, use a defibrillator, practice CPR, all with the ultimate goal of saving lives and working as a team with all the other health care professionals. Never take this for granted because you never know when all of this will come in handy in your medical journey and you can be the one making a difference 🤓💉💊👩🏻‍⚕️ [ also intubating a patient is a REAL workout without having a lawyer and a dentist involved 😂] •

Walking into Monday like 👊🏻 💥 let’s kick butt today!!
Hellloooo everyone 👋
.
You may have noticed it’s been pretty quiet from my end this past week - it definitely ran away from me!
.
Between working in clinic, consulting for an medical application company, social engagements, applications and everyday errands I’ve definitely found myself pressed for time. What that has led to though is a greater appreciation of the Instagram community. Thank you to everyone who inspires me everyday, whether through pictures, quotes, tips or reflections. You guys are AMAZING and I’m so glad I get to follow you on your journeys!
.
Would love it if you guys could comment with your favourite Instagram pages!

Let’s talk about ⛈ STRESS ⛈
Just a few days ago, I had a conversation with a good friend of mine. She asked the question we all know and love: “How has school been going?” Immediately that opens a floodgate of complaints— just this week?! 2 exams, 1 presentation, 2 job interviews. UGH.

But I sat back and thought about all the amazing opportunities that allowed for me to be this stressed. I’m graduating soon and this is the last time I’ll be attending the campus and I’ve been getting job offers (which is an extreme blessing). Ultimately, you gotta step back and realize that the things we complain about now? There was a point where we didn’t have them—
there was once a time when we hoped to be where we are today; whether it be in the classes you’re dealing with, or those days when you were simply hoping to get that job that’s been draining you lately.

Perspective is everything. Don’t take it for granted.
Which perspective will you choose? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The look when your case cancels and you have an afternoon to do ..... ANYTHING!
.
I’m a planner, a doer, it’s probably why I add things to my already full plate. I remember when I felt so overwhelmed by #CTSurgery that I didn’t know if I could ever fit anything of “Amy” back in.
.
.
Throw in a few kids AND a traveling husband and believe me, one can go into survival mode pretty easily. .
.
I never thought I was be a business owner or ever think of anything but surgery- and while it’s my first love, it is good for the soul to develop the “other parts” of your life!
.
If you would open a business -right now- like using that gift you have or that passion project- what would it be?!?

This little pearl of wisdom from @nasa reminds me I absolutely must recommend the book "Why we sleep" by Dr. Matthew Walker.
.
Not only has sleep scienyist Dr. Walker managed to engage my attention through the very detailed description of sleep's essential process, perfect function and incredible importance in our life, he also successfully explains the amazing experience that is DREAMING!
.
A really impactful read that will make you want to reassess your life rithm right away!
.
And also the only writer who will not take any offence if you fall asleep while reading his book!

5 day hiatus but I’m back! Last week/weekend was super busy, so I’ll throw a little update at you guys. Last week we finished PA week with a student/faculty breakfast get together (balloons and all!). Then this weekend I went home to see my parents and get a little help from my dad on EKGs! Having both my parents in the medical field and as resources has definitely helped me a ton with learning all this information. Now just class today and tomorrow and we are on FALL BREAK! (AKA study time for our cardiology exam next Friday!) happy Monday friends. Do something amazing today! ♥️👩🏽‍⚕️📈📉💉🍂🍁•

New segment where I feature insight from practicing PAs. Check out this awesome PA
@karinathepa_c
Hi my name is Karina Miranda, PA-C
I practice Endocrinology
I attended Midwestern University PA Program and graduated in 2015
1. When did you realize you wanted to pursue the PA profession?
Ever since I was 12 years old I would accompany my mother to the hospital for appointments, I would see people walking the hallways with their long white coats and I remember telling my mom “I’m going to be like them one day and work in a hospital”. In college, I started to explore the different medical career paths and I really could not find the one that was good for me. I think I switched pre-majors 3-4 times! Then my grandfather passed away, there was a language barrier, there was little economic resources and everyone in the family felt like something more could have been done in regards to the care he received. I felt helpless seeing my family broken so I knew that I wanted to be in the forefront of decision making in regards to patient care so I started doing research online and came across an article comparing MDs to PAs and as I read more about it I knew this was it. The autonomy, the laterality, the shorter years in school, less school loans. A light bulb went off in my head and I was happy that I had finally found what I meant to be a PA-C.
2. What did you find as the most difficult part of applying to PA school?
The most difficult part was finding resources that made the application process to PA school easier. There were very few pre-PA programs available in college and therefore you were doing a lot of research on your own. Social media regarding the PA profession was not as readily available as it is today. As the profession has grown over the last few years, it has been nice to see the abundance of resources to help pre-PAs and PA students succeed in their journey.

What’s your chronotype?
.
.
🦁 lions: early risers, highly driven
🐻 bears: sleep-wake patterns follow the sun, steady energy
🐺 wolves: late night sleepers, creatives
🐬 insomniacs, neurotic
.
.
Which are you? Google “power when quiz” and find out. WHY is this important? Because your chronotype is genetic and determines how perform. You can optimize your day and sleep schedule and routines to align with your chronotype.
.
.
Sometimes we try to fit into another chronotype, but it doesn’t work. We can hack it but can’t change it.

I go into this, as well as all other facets of individual and organizational energy in my holistic burnout online course. Because we just don’t want to not be burned out. We want to be absolutely energized and lit up ✨ #lituptribe

Why I chose PT?
I chose physical therapy because I love that it is a healthcare profession that looks at how to optimize the quality of someone's life. I think a lot of fields in medicine and even just in general focus on preserving life, and thats obviously very important, but PT is a profession that takes things one step further and looks at the quality of that life-- so not just having life but living it! I love too that PTs are advocates for health and wellness and that we get to work alongside our patients to help optimize their unique abilities through movement! ——————————————————————————

Suture practice! Pay no attention to the actual stitches, we were just supposed to get used to turning our wrists and nothing else. Not too shabby with that knot tying, but need more practice with instrumentation. Day 1 of surgery, here we go. 🧜

An old boss of mine once likened my behaviour to that of a swan. Calm on the surface but paddling like mad underneath. I think that truly describes the life of an EA! #workingformyself #palife #virtualassistant #ealife #swans #keepcalm
Ok Cairns, RELAX! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Feels like the wet season got here overnight.... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’m not readdddddyyyy! Wishing I was poolside with my feet in the water right now. My office feels like a sauna!

I LOVED wearing my dresses during my pediatrics rotation but it'll be nice to get back into some scrubs for this next one. Rotation 5: surgery! Scrubs and scalpels 4-eva. 🔪💉 ~
And look, I didn't get peed on, spit on, sneezed on, or bled on a single time, and I survived without getting sick. Yay me! ~

Y'all, I passed my peds EOR with flying colors and my grad project manuscript was graded on Friday- my group passed! Later that night I went to a suture clinic to brush up the did I learned during clinical year prep. So glad that was offered and the timing couldn't have been better. ~

To celebrate, we spent the entire day at the State Fair eating all and sundry; the 6 year old ate 3 corn dogs and still wanted to know what we were having for dinner. 😂 🧜

I’m a couple days late, but working a night shift on this Sunday evening seems like the perfect time to post for PA Week! I’m constantly humbled at the experiences I’ve had and the knowledge I’ve gained over the past two and a half years working as a PA in the ICU. It’s a difficult job but very rewarding and I’m lucky to be surrounded by some amazing people here at the hospital every day. If you don’t know what a PA can do, just ask one :)

Recently, I went through my Bucknell planner to reflect on my senior year of college and was shocked. I honestly don’t know how I survived it. When I was going through senior year, I was too busy to think about the number of hours I was spending for my classes. During both semesters, I was taking three of my hardest biology courses (all with labs) because I had to complete both my neuroscience and PA school requirements. On top of that, I took upper-level sociology courses to complete my minor while also shadowing a PA on the side and working a part-time job. Even though I went through all of this, I remember it as a happy kind of suffering because I was doing everything I needed to do for my future. I remember watching my friends have the best times of their lives and having to resist any temptations. However, I was determined to complete all my goals, would get away from distractions, and would spend hours locked up in a library room cracking down on new materials. However, I also knew that I needed a work-life balance and made sure to treat myself after I completed everything on my checklist for the day. I guess this was just a practice run for PA school 💪🏻 #motivation #palife #physicianassistant #pa #medical #bucknell #bucknelluniversity #bucknell2017

Balance.
•
•
Workout but also take naps.
Eat whole, healthy foods but also order that Chinese takeout or pizza.
Drink water but also drink that margarita.
Stay in and study but also go out and have fun.
Work your butt off but also make sure you have lazy days to rejuvenate yourself.
•
•
Life is about creating that balance. So work hard for your goals but also make sure to enjoy the life you live.

My name is Christine and I graduated from Bucknell University with a degree in neuroscience and minor in sociology! I felt like my minor was necessary because I kept on getting this tunnel vision whenever working with biological systems. I focused too much on the smallest physiological players and had trouble synthesizing different pieces together to create bigger and more practical medical pictures. The minor really helped me connect different biological players to diverse sociological systems and human interactions. This synthesis really humanized what I had been studying. I believe that it has prepared me for Physician Assistant (PA) school. I’m starting this instagram to keep track of my journey as a future PA. I’m still going through the interview process and will be making some official decisions soon. I will definitely be starting school in 2019! #physicianassistant #paschool #palife #pa #medical #bucknelluniversity #bucknell #bucknell2017

Distance means so little when someone means so much ♥️ • While in PA school (or any healthcare field) we have so little free time. Don’t forget to be present with the little that you have. #reunited

Are you as obsessed with podcasts as we are? Whether we’re driving, folding laundry, or walking our pups, podcasts are super enjoyable. Core IM is one of the best medically focused podcasts that I’ve found yet. (And I’ve searched....quite a bit 😋) These quick (~15 min) episodes each focus on a common condition and address the “why” of its diagnosis and treatment. Once a successful medical treatment or approach is established, students often hear “that’s just what we do” but take the time to understand the WHY, connect the dots, and become a better future provider 👍 @core.im.podcast

When you see patients everyday afflicted with chronic diseases and sometimes cancer, you try your best to be as compassionate as possible. When something like breast cancer affects a family member, there are a multitude of emotions I never expected.
____________
My godmother was diagnosed last year and has been going through chemotherapy. The side effects, the allergic reactions, the brain fog… CHEMO SUCKS. After completing several cycles of chemo, she had surgery and was told to start chemo again.
____________ “The needles are never-ending,” she said. It’s been really tough for her but she’s so strong; she’s taking it day by day. She is a freaking warrior. So when I encounter a patient who is a breast cancer survivor, I take a couple of moments to ask them about their experience and to praise them for being so damn BADASS.

Stress tip of the day:
.
.
Make it fun. Discipline doesn’t have to exclude fun. Going for your goals and the WORK are inherently not fun or funny. Waking up early to study or prep for the day is not fun.
.
.
But you can choose to e n j o y the rough parts. You can make it as enjoyable as possible. Hell no it won’t be glamorous.

The things we’re doing are hard. But you can’t wait until you reach your goals to start enjoying life. Ya feel me? ✨#lituptribe

Working an early shift, preparing 3 kids and running out the house by 6:30am is no easy task 😫. There is never any time to prepare breakfast (the most important meal of the day)!

To help me stay fueled through my morning in the ER I eat @thinkproducts oatmeal. Contains 10g of protein, 5g of fiber and is only 190 calories!
