Standing in the midst of 2000 year old ruins and feeling the presence of giants whose wisdom and ingenuity still drives much of our modern reality today. Learning from historian Alex at @crowntoursitaly that our modern calendar (with months July for Julius Caesar and August for Augustus), September "sales" (coming from the Latin "sale", meaning salt which is what soldiers could buy goods with) and so much more. One of the best experiences of having history brought to life!
As the legend goes, the hero twins Romulus and Remus were raised by a she-Wolf and eventually became the founders of Rome. This a prime example (maybe “the” prime example) of the connection between humans and canids in western culture. The bronze statue is believed to be from the first century BCE.

On another note, at the dog conference I came here for, one of the papers presented talked about how Italy is home to some of the best preserved wolf fossil remains in Europe. The author uses data from these ancient wolf specimens (Canis lupus italica) to better understand dog domestication in the rest of Europe (Lurino et al 2018)
