Out on a LIM.
An uncle whom I met for the first time here in Fujian said of me, "I look at this one and I know she's a cheeky one." What a keen observer. 🤭
I'm glad I made the trip to meet my paternal relatives in China. Here in Fujian I got to know more about being a Lim/Lin/林.
As the 16th largest clan out of a hundred major Chinese clans, I got to see how the Lin clan prospered in Fujian through the govt-preserved old streets. I got to go into courtyards of prominent Lim men and read of how they helped advance education in their communities, pushed against imperialism, fought against the opium trade and most of all, how they migrated to South East Asia and South America to make a name for themselves. Thanks gramps!
The mindset however, was 'get rich or don't come home'. Surprisingly, some of my relatives have migrated to Africa and Argentina in the last 10yrs and haven't been back since. The tradition prevails.
This trip has definitely helped me as the diaspora appreciate my culture and food better.
