33 years ago, 13 July 1985, I am eighteen and I'm going to attend with my mates to my 1st music festival with Depeche Mode !
The festival Rockscene takes place in a field of South Britanny and, great, it's a hot sunny day.
First, I watch Leonard Cohen opening the show at 3 pm but there aren't a lot of people listening to him. I don't even know yet who he is exactly. Later, Working Week delivers a cool version of Innercity blues. Just after that, a speaker comes on stage and says that the Ramones have missed their flight at JFK and won't play tonight..booh !
Then there is a little rain followed by a rainbow that a bald giant points from his index finger. It's Pete Garrett from Midnight Oil and it becomes electric ! Between two burning songs, angry, he asks us to stop our nuclear tests in the south pacific. What does he mean ? He's raging and his group is so good that I'll borrow their Lps at the library the following week.
The evening comes and we wait - long - for the new band to play: There's a struggle with the organization as it seems that The Clash don't want to play and open for the last act.
Finally at 11 pm, Joe Strummer comes on stage with a Mohican haircut. Behind him, no Mick Jones but Paul Simonon and 3 subsitutes who do the job. I remember them playing This is England.
Midnight: it was worth waiting. the four Depeche Mode appear on stage. The crowd yell as starts Something to do.
And... it's the beginning of the Dave Gahan show !
He must be 24 and he's already like Freddy Mercury, running allthrough the stage, dancing, singing, turning around. A tornado !
The three others mostly stay in the dark. Alan Wilder sometimes loads floppy disc on his keyboard for new sounds.
I am exhausted: the hits are well played including Blasphemous Rumours, Leave in Silence and Master and Servant.
An hour later, it's time to come home.
Next meeting with DM will be Feb 88, but you know about it 😉(see my post from 26 Feb 2018)
