Ottawa is 'the city that fun forgot', 'looks like some tired little Prairie town on its last legs' and is also 'a boring government town' - these were the catchphrases that welcomed me when we moved to Ottawa with my family, not that long ago. Is it really true? Is Ottawa that boring? Maybe you can't call it the the funniest city in the continent but with a lot of walks behind me, I can state that at a certain level it is actually playful. Of course, to catch it you have to be playful too. But If you are open for a little fun the city will play with you too. Let me give you a simple example. Fire Route signs - the last thing you expect to be playful. The shape, typo, sizes etc. are regulated by city by-laws or at the federal level. And still: just around the Drill Hall you can find three different versions of the sign with three different firetruck symbols. (Also a fourth design can be spotted nearby at the Museum of Nature.) Beyond the obvious, that regulations changed and so did the sign, I wonder whether there is a story behind this unusual phenomena? Is there a Secret Association of Fire Truck Lovers (SAFTL), using these signs as a kind of secret map? Or is there a silent official at the municipality who wants to surprise his/her son with a novel sign again and again? Who knows/cares? Just go a little bit further and you can envision a different city, a Fun-Ottawa (sorry: Funtawa) with a Fun Department at City Hall. Its dedicated officials are working together with artists, business owners, kids etc. to make the city more liveable - more loveable. No need for expensive event halls, million dollar strategies - all you need is to play!
A huge thanks for those who helped me to find 'the' story behind the different fire route signs (it seems there is no story, but still) : Michael, City of Ottawa, Lynne, Public Services and Procurement Canada, Pierre, Transport Canada, last but not least David, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, Government of Canada.
The weather has been incredible lately and @jkscarlato and I decided to check out the new @OttawaArtGallery . Its beautifully laid out with changing exhibits, an outdoor patio, and a unique bar and coffee shop. The bar @jacksondrinkeat had some delicious speciality cocktails and great coffee. Jess and I made a video teaser, check it out!
