My inactivity of late was caused by a move to one day become a distiller of such spirits.
I mixed up this thing with my remaining Stalinist brandy. Its original incarnation was called the Japanese Cocktail in the bar manual from the 1880s in which it first appeared. I decided I didn't like the original recipe of bitters, brandy, and orgeat syrup and wanted more orange notes. The original cocktail also had nothing to Japan as grapes don't even grow there and orgeat syrup is of French or Italian origin.
Thus I invented the Anime Was A Mistake Cocktail to really get lots of orange.
1/3 oz orgeat syrup
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash Dillon's orange bitters
Stir over ice (you can also shake as it's sort of opaque but eh). Pour into coup. Garnish by flaming an orange peel. This looks super cool and will impress your gullible friends (aka me) into thinking you're a sick bartender. You do this by peeling a bit of orange peel, then taking a match, lighting it and letting some sulfur burn off. Then you hold the peel over the drink and squeeze oil through the fire and flames into the drink. It'll make small puffs which will hopefully be reflected in the nether regions of an attractive member of the opposite sex. The oils don't taste bad either.
The name comes from an equally apocryphal anecdote of famed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki stating "anime was a mistake" in response to the absolute state of modern Japanese animation. If only he'd actually said it, this drink might actually be from Japan.
Our feature cocktail of the week is the Mai Tai. With toasted almond orgeat, cointreau, lime and Flor de Caña 7 year aged rum. Now on our classics list, it will be on for $8 during happy hour this week only.
@jonahcancook made homemade orgeat so naturally I had to test some cocktails to showcase it. This little number with gin, Campari, pineapple juice, lime juice, and of course, orgeat, is like a cross between a Negroni and a Mai Tai and it is AWESOME. 🍹
Kola Sour | Banks 5 Island Rum | Meletti Amaro | Homemade orgeat | Lemon | Egg white | Bittercube cherry bark vanilla bitters | From I’m just Here for the Drinks by @creativedrunk. I’m not a fan of sours and truth be told I find whiskey sours boring, and don’t get me started on New York Sours. This however is truly lovely. I’m a fan of @banksrums and I dig the floral and bitterness of Meletti amaro. Add in homemade orgeat and this is borderline tiki. A great cocktail. Buy the book if you want the recipe. I sipped this while prepping dinner and listening to Big Star’s second LP, Radio City.
I know summer is coming to an end but I think I’ll be drinking frozen cocktails well into November. This is @allpointswestdistillery’s Saturn | gin, passion fruit, lemon, falernum and orgeat. #tbt#allpointswestdistillery#bartimestories
Reminiscing about our honeymoon and visiting @tradersams in Disneyland. Naturally, I bought this cup to keep so that I could recreate my own cocktail in here. Have you guys ever been to the one in Disney World? We’re looking forward to going in January! 🍍🥥 🌴 #acozyhome#drinksanddecor
Clarified Mai Tai
1 oz. English Harbour 5 Year (@englishharbour_rum)
1 oz. Clement Rhum Vieux Agricole (@rhumclement)
1/2 oz. Smith & Cross
3/4 oz. lime juice
3/4 oz. orgeat (@bgreynolds)
1/2 oz. Cointreau (@cointreau)
1 oz. whole milk (to clarify)
I enjoyed my last clarified Mai Tai so much that I had to make another one (this time with different rums). In comparison to my previous Mai Tai, I switched up the rhum agricole from the floral Trois Rivieres Blanc to the more funky and vegetal Clement Vieux. I used a smaller dose of Smith & Cross, and also introduced English Harbour 5 Year to the blend.
English Harbour 5 Year is the first Antiguan rum I've worked with. At its price point, it has excellent value. This is definitely a drier rum, filled with notes of spiced oak and a touch of light smoke. Fruity and tropical without being overly-sweet. Regrettably, only their 5 Year bottling is available for sale here.
Monkeypod Mai Tai topped with Honey-Lilikoi Foam from Moku Kitchen at SALT in Honolulu.
Old Lahaina Light Rum + Dark Rum, Mac Nut Orgeat, Curaçao, Lime.
A handcrafted cocktail off their Moku Libations menu that takes the popular Hawaii resort drink to a new level and which doesn’t skimp on the rum.
“Cameron’s Kick(scotch and irish whisky, orgeat, lemon): another hidden gem from Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, the combination of whiskies sounds odd, but the richness of the real almond orgeat unites the ingredients into a perfect whisky sour variation.” - Jen Colliau
My newest bottle is this lovely Dominican rum from @kirkandsweeney. There’s a great story behind the brand and the bottle. Kirk and Sweeney was a schooner that smuggled rum from the Caribbean to the US during Prohibition. It was seized off the coast of New York in 1924. The rum comes with an antiqued Coast Guard “property seizure” tag around its neck, a touch that I really enjoy. The rum itself is aged 12 years, and is full of gorgeous honey and vanilla notes with a long, oaky finish. It inspired me to make some hazelnut orgeat, which added a great nutty, toasty flavor to this drink. I think this one of my favorite cocktails I’ve come up with recently!
Nothing to Declare
1.5 oz @kirkandsweeney 12-year Rum
3/4 oz @giffardusa Banane du Bresil
1/4 oz @tempus_fugit_spirits Creme de Cacao
1/2 oz hazelnut orgeat (homemade - check out @liquordotcom or @cider_and_rye for a recipe)
1/2 oz lime juice
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into a large brandy snifter filled with crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of mint and dark chocolate shavings if you have them.

Behold the Melena de Leon - a favorite on the cocktail menu at Cúrate! It’s a complex combo of @makersmark bourbon, orgeat syrup and @angosturahouse bitters.
