Our 'Ruby Streaks' Mustard is flowering, much to the delight of many beneficial insects including this gorgeous Hoverfly! Hoverflies, are true flies that mimic bees and wasps through its yellow and black colouration and should be welcomed into your garden readily. The helicopter-like adults hover and dart about as they feed on nectar and pollinate flowers, while the larvae hatch from small creamy eggs and feed on aphids 👍 #hoverfly#beneficialinsects#mustard
Is it this time of year already? The time for sweetcorn! This is a variety developed by Fred Ashworth of St. Lawrence Nursery in New York. The legend is that he chose to develop those kernels of sweetcorn from the bin that the rats preferred the most. He named it “Rat Selected” but it got renamed to “Ashworth” later.
The bean trials are totally overwhelming me. Let’s just say I did not get them trellised and they are a wild bunch..some from Syria, Louisiana, Washington State, Southwest US, Italy, many more from the Northeast US and South America. Ranking and taking notes on maturity dates, disease prevalence, other limitations. This plot has high grass pressure, high moisture and shaded more than the north side. High grass areas has less N and more bacteria, legumes can potentially shift soil to high fungi (high F:B ratio), which is good for soil quality. Some beans are thriving, others going down in flames. Most likely due to the pH shift to 8 and an inability to move or mine nutrients depending on historical region it originated from. We will later will dig up a few plants by type to look at root structure. Important trait sometimes overlooked, can determine the capacity and efficacy of nutrient mining and water regulation depending on the ability to form nodules with a Rhizobia ssp. and form the symbiosis. #plantbreeding#fabaceae#legumes#beans#organicseeds#organic#nitrogenfixers#carbonsequestration#northernnewmexico#newmexico#symbiosis#observationaldata

What looks from a distance to be a single flower is in fact an umbel, with many branching umbelets and quite literally, hundreds of tiny flowers! #queenanneslace#beneficialinsects#givebeesachance
These used to be Organic SEEDS from HOME DEPOT ! I got my mom some for her BIRTHDAY and we planted them together. Now everyday my mom is picking something new from the garden! Here’s today’s treasures!! I thought the seeds were expensive but now I SEE(d) how fruitful they are. Talk about a smart investment! We are now collecting the seeds from these guys and replanting them!
First of a few dry beans in the trials to mature. ‘Hidatsa Red’ finished in 80-85 days grown in marginal compact soil, medium yields, excellent color and drought tolerance. Inoculated with Rhizobia ssp. and watered 3 times lightly. The history in most the seed catalogs are almost identical or paraphrased, I researched a bit deeper...In 1805 the small group of the “Corps of Discovery” spent six winter months at Fort Mandan on the Missouri, near the Arikara, Hidatsa, and Mandan villages and documented food sources and cultural practices, collected seed. Some ethnobotanists recognize this bean as ‘the Ama’ca hi’ci’ mentioned by Buffalo Bird Woman in “The Agriculture of the Hidatsa Indians” one of five beans cultivated as distinct types back then. This bean has been cultivated for 1500 – 2000 years. By 850 AD, tribes were settled along the Great Plains and were practicing subsistence farming. Why is this important besides being a living artifact? It means that hundreds of years of breeding and mass selection of the Hidatsa Red for semi-arid marginal soils of the northern Great Plains were done by proficient agriculturalists. This is a keeper for the dry years ahead of us, hopefully I should get a pound (in two separate plots) for next year’s trials. #hidatsa#hidatsabeans#beans#legumes#rhizobia#plantbreeding#organicseeds#seed#seedbank#seedbankforhumanity#northernnewmexico#newmexico
Let the #seed harvest begin! As seeds begin to ripen in the field , we bring them inside to clean them, dry them further if needed, and germ test them (ensuring viability!). Kim harvested the Columbine this weekend and before that we got an abundance of coreopsis! Many varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs ripen at different times, so we are busy scouting the field looking for crops that are ready to harvest the #seed from. The third photo is chive seeds drying out a bit more. We also have Lots of help inside the office getting ready for the new seed season as well. 🌺🌰🐝😻🌱 #Organicseedfarm#flowers#organicflowers ##organicflowerseeds#seed#organicseeds#catsofinstagram#farmcat
Get your protein straight from the source, PLANTS! 🌱 Most plant proteins are low in 1 or 2 amino acids though, so it's best to combine them with other plant proteins to cover the range of amino acids out there 😊 Meat protein doesn't provide your body with Phytochemicals, Mono & polyunsaturated fats, fibre, or a guilt free meal 💙 When did you give up eating recycled protein from animals?
