Our pigs are an important part of our organic farming system. We try and keep our farm as a closed loop. As little inputs from off farm as possible. Pig food includes waste avocados and crops like bananas, cannas and taro grown on our water recycling system. They also get a daily bucket of fermented biodynamic wheat. The soaking and fermenting makes it more digestible and sprouting adds nutrition. In return we get joy everyday from these lovely animals and also meat. This week we processed this five year old sow, into prosciutto, bacon and salami. Bones were kept for stock and lard frozen for future rendering. We are very grateful and privileged to have this incredible source of food for our family and friends. Housed in a converted 1952 Dodge truck, our brood of Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, Koekoeks and Buff Orpingtons spend their days free ranging and foraging in the vineyards.
They’re great at spreading and breaking down the cow manure as they scratch, and at controlling flies by foraging for their larvae. They’re also providing us and FABER Restaurant with fresh pasture-reared eggs. #knowyourfarmer#eggmobile
