I love being strong. I love how empowering it is for me and how much hard work has to be put into it. I’ve never been afraid to work for anything, and am not one to back down when it gets rough. I’m confrontational and a fixer by nature, so when faced with a problem, I want to meet it head on and find a solution, even with my workouts. My solution to getting stronger was to increase my caloric intake, put in the hours lifting, and I started seeing improvements. It was a huge focus for my year. Within that year, I put on ten pounds. While most people would overlook that, “It’s only ten pounds, no biggy.” I decided to change my goals. Ten pounds not regulated will turn into 20 the next year, then 30...get my drift? Then you’re standing in front of a mirror one day wondering how it got so bad and feeling hopeless to fix it. I see 10 pounds as a reminder that I have to reign it in a bit and get my nutrition back under control. Granted, it may not be ten pounds of fat, but I’ve also wanted to lean out more while maintaining strength and performance (if I improve slowly that’s great too). With my new goals in mind, I have hired a great coach to help adjust my numbers, keep accountability, and be my cheer squad when I need it. She’s an amazingly smart and strong woman who knows her shit so I’m excited to work with her and see where my body composition, my strength, and my performance will go in the following year. @brit_suplick I’m ready for this! Last night I was able to complete one of my goals for 2018. I wanted to break through 90kg/198lbs on my snatch. I was able to get to 92kg/202kg breaking through it! Q: Taylor, I don’t see you really barbell back squats?? Do you not like them? Do you think they are bad? What are your thoughts on them?

A: First off there is no such thing as a “bad” movement just ones you do not meet the prerequisites for... secondly, I personally only train the front squat variation if I do barbell squat.
-
My main movement nowadays for developing leg strength is loaded lunges (walking or elevated).
-
It is rare that I perform low bar of high bar back squats for a couple reasons.
-
1) I have gotten injured multiple times from performing heavy weight back squats. I have never gotten injured from doing heavy lunges or split squats. (Also I am not competing in a powerlifting meet or else I would)
-
As a former elite cyclist I have garbage 🗑 spinal segmentation (specifically thoracic extension) and ankle dorsiflexion which is required to properly load a back squat through the legs and not the low back.

I believe lunges carryover far better to running, sport and life. One hip is in flexion while the other is in extension. Even take a look 👀 at the big toe go into dorsiflexion! -
I feel lunges develop hypertrophy in the legs far greater than back squats to the fact it challenges more of the musculature rather than the skeleton.

Also as Captain Obvious would say it helps balance out the body.

Are barbell back squats amazing? HECK yes and I still do them. I just don’t try to go for glory and squat over 2x body weight like I used to!

A barbell squat is a tool.
A barbell lunge is a tool.
It is up to the “carpenter” to use those tools in right manner.

BUILDING MUSCLE, BURNING FAT
It's been a couple of months since I've tried to push past my one rep max. After talking to Crossfit expert @victorious176 the other day, I felt motivated to try again. I was comfortable squatting about 100-115 lbs at 5-8 reps. Last night I maxed at 125. Cool. I'll hover there for a while before I push again.
I've said this before and I'll keep saying it again to hopefully encourage you, especially women in your 40s and 50s - lift dem weights! The benefits:

1. Optimize your basal metabolic rate, so you burn fat efficiently. As we age, our metabolism slows down. Weight training revs it back up.
2. Increase muscle mass. Again, to optimize metabolism. Also keeps you strong and toned.
3. Increase quantity and quality of mitochondria, the trillions of organelles in your cells that create energy to fuel your entire body. 
3. Reduce/release stress. Regulates the stress hormone cortisol.
4. Improve brain function. Normalizes brain chemicals.
5. Balance hormones & stabilize mood.
6. Release lipophilic (fat- soluble) toxins through the skin (sweat).
6. Look fit, be fit, feel fit!

15 days out: my first ring muscle ups... just Messing around before my next session trying to figure these things out. The bar muscle up and ring muscle up look similar but feel completely different. I know what the ring muscle up is supposed to look like and what I need to to different but making it happen when your actually on the rings is a different animal. Why I waited this long and this close to competition to learn these is beyond me. All I can do is practice a ton for the next 2 weeks and pray they don’t show up on competition day 😬

Get excited Woodstock!! PLAE HARD is hosting an Olympic Weightlifting 101 Clinic! Saturday 11/3 10:30AM - 1:30PM. Limited spots available! 
The Olympic lifts are commonly used in athletic based training. This clinic is a great foundations course for beginners to get introduced to the Olympic weightlifting movements (Snatch and Clean & Jerk) as well as a refresher for experienced athletes to brush up on their technique. This clinic is issued in two, 1.5 hour sessions in a small group setting.

This course will be lead by Olympic Weightlifting coaches and athletes - Ayse Sukola and Megan Morse. The goal of this clinic is to help you learn proper technique from the start which is essential to making consistent progress and keeping you safe and healthy.

When: Saturday, November 3rd

Time: 10:30AM - 1:30PM

Where: PLAE HARD: 8594 Main Street, Woodstock GA

Cost: $25

Max: 20 Participants
