PROCESS ~ There are a lot of processes which go into each and every piece that I make, but this little bit here has got to be one of my favourite moments in the making journey of a product.
The metal object you see at the beginning of the video is called a comb. You start the knitting using the comb and a waste yarn (white) so that the chosen yarn (pink/teal) has something to lock onto. This ensures that you finish with a neat and sealed edge which does not run.
This is me detaching the knitted piece from the waste yarn. Instead of cutting along the entire edge, I make a cut at either end and by selecting and pulling the correct piece of thread, the knitting comes away from the waste yarn as if by magic! I remember being shown this little process at university and I still very much enjoy the simple satisfaction of it ✂️ #oliviajholland#process#knittting

SILK IS INCREDIBLE ~
It regulates your body temperature, keeping you warm in the cold and cool in the heat.
It is the strongest natural fibre you can find.
It is hypoallergenic and won't irritate sensitive skin.
It shimmers and shines due to it's prism like structure which reflects light.
It can ease menopasual hot flashes due to it's ability to help you maintain optimum body temperature.
It has low density making it light and comfortable to wear.
It drapes beautifully and does not lose it's shape.
Silk is expensive, but for all of these reasons worth it.
Click the link in my bio to shop 'The Glacial Collection' via my website, every piece of which is handcrafted using 100% SILK.
The Ovals Narrow Scarf ~ swipe right to see the 5 different colour ways available ~ which is your favourite?
Whilst all the designs in 'The Glacial Collection' are reversible, I particularly love this one because of how the proportion and arrangement of colour changes between the 2 sides.
Handcrafted from 100% silk, this piece is designed to keep your neck cosy but without the bulk. It can also be styled in a variety of ways (I sometimes wear this piece as a headscarf.) #oliviajholland#theglacialcollection#silkscarf#knittedscarf

The most subtle of the 100% silk Drips Tie design.
A shining silver overlapping a muted lilac purple.
This design is all about unexpected colours being overlapped with one another. When it comes to colour, I tend to go for bold & bright, however I love the elegant simplicity of this combination.

Me in action @knit_design_centre
This week has been full on, exciting & terrifying.
I have had to totally step out of my comfort zone and push myself as a designer, maker, brand and human being!
From my first location photoshoot, to meeting and working with new people, travelling and staying away alone, understanding knitting in a new way, and beginning to expand my business by setting up production outside of just my own hands .
I have met and worked with new people, cried a bit & produced a lot. I am exhausted, but ready to take over the world now.
BTS of 'The Glacial Collection' lookbook shoot earlier this week.
This was a huge but exciting challenge for me, to go from designing and making the collection in the comfort of my studio, to collaborating with others on organising the shoot, coming up with a concept & finding a suitable location and then seeing my pieces come to life on 2 wonderful models.
A huge thank you to the group of creatives who jumped on board with this and brought such positive energy to the shoot.
@desireecremona for helping with the whole shoot organisation, designing the moodboard, having such a strong vision on location, taking absolutely incredible photos and being an all round creative beauty!
@kay_belay for styling such cool, cohesive looks, multitasking as an amazing model and being able to just visualise what's in my head and make it come to life.
@bolemene for being totally gorgeous, so much fun to work with and looking beautiful in absolutely everything we put her in, you are a star!
@nsu_makeupartist for creating the most perfect natural beauty makeup look, for being so professional and fun, it was a pleasure.
Photos coming soon!! ❤️ #oliviajholland#theglacialcollection#lookbookshoot

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT! Really excited that I will be showing & selling my NEW COLLECTION at the Makers Market with @south_east_makers_club as part of @l_d_f_official
The event will be in Deptford Market Yard 14th-16th September and will be held alongside workshops and other exciting things happening around Deptford.
Having grown up in South East London I am particularly honored and excited to be showing with such a wonderful organisation dedicated to showing off the amazing creativity in South East London.
I have a few other things happening in September so stay tuned for more!
S I L K Y. S M O O T H.
I wish you could feel textures in images because this silk is SO soft and sumptuous against the skin.
I had to choose between this colour way and navy/brown, and the navy and brown won. However I still love this combination and will therefore be selling this piece as a one off sample in September - keep your eyes peeled for where 👀
HAPPY HANDS ✋ @jamietrouncelondon capturing my hands in action @cockpitarts summer open studios. Here, I am hand finishing the ends of a tie so that it has a clean, neat edge.
Very time consuming but it's all in the details!

PERFECTLY PACKAGED ~ I feel so angry when something I order online arrives in ridiculously excessive packaging. You know the box in a box in a bigger box with tonnes of paper to pad it ? It's an unnecessary waste and I feel we should have advanced past that by now.
Which is why at Olivia J Holland, we pack your online order beautifully and thoughtfully but in MINIMAL packaging, all of which is made from previously recycled materials. 💚🌳🌿🌍 #oliviajholland#sustainablefashion

'T H E. G L A C I A L. C O L L E C T I O N.' My new unisex, hand crafted textile collection, finely knitted from 100% silk.
This collection was inspired from my own photography of a magical trip to Iceland last year.
Colours include beautiful blues, soft Grey's, mellow purple and rich brown.
These colours come together to create a bold but wearable palette which can transcend seasons.
The Glacial Collection, which for now is taking the form of accessories (ties, narrow scarves and wide scarves) will be exclusively available for direct order from me at @cockpitarts Deptford open studios 15-17th June.
The full collection will then be available online via my website from the end of July.
Continue to watch this space as these designs start to also become garments towards the end of the year!
C o l o u r.
My new collection has been focused around creating a unisex colour palette and using it in a variety of considered and refined patterns. I have 4 designs, each in 4 colour ways. These designs are spread across an accessories product range which will be available for direct order from mid June.
These detailed designs will be further developed into clothing towards the end of the year, so if that takes your fancy make sure you sign up to my newsletter for the first info on this!
I will be revealing the title of my new collection on here t o m o r r o w!
T H A N K Y O U To the wonderful ladies who organised @peckhamcraftweekend & to all of the lovely visitors.
The show at @copelandparkse was curated absolutely beautifully, mixing and matching work from different makers together, in unique still life groups
Here are a few pieces of mine from 'The Lisbon Collection' in situ in the gallery.
Really proud to have been a part of this wonderful show during @londoncraftweek

Photo from my glorious weekend away in Berlin ~ thank you @benn1606 for a TOTAL surprise, wonderful time & for forcing me to relax and take a break.
Berlin is an amazing city & I already want to go back! Full of vibrant people, beautiful colour, architecture and expressive street art. (I felt this photo summed that up in one) &
Even though I haven't yet finished making this year's new collection, I already know where the inspriation is coming from for my next! If you like this kinda colour, keep your eyes peeled 👀
Silk shining in the sunshine ☀️ Still have to sew up and finish all 12 of these new collection ties, as well as knit and finish 24 more pieces to debut at @cockpitarts open studios in June, oh and finish moving house... I think the phrase is, keep calm & carry on !
NEW EVENT! ~ I am really excited to be part of the official @londoncraftweek calendar exhibiting alongside other designer makers in The Copeland Gallery in Peckham with @peckhamcraftweekend
I will be showing a small selection of designs from 'The Lisbon Collection'. The private view is on Thursday 10th May 6-9pm, with the show continuing Friday 11th - Sunday 13th, 10am-5pm.
There will be lots of fantastic work on show as well as a shop and workshops happening all weekend. Would be great to see some of you there!
Bringing colour to the boys.
Here are some samples from my new unisex range. All designs are made in 100% silk and come in a variety of colour ways.
With this collection I want to bring bold, beautiful but wearable colour to men as well as women, who often don't have a huge amount of choice when it comes to interesting colour for their accessories.
MY DESIGN PROCESS ~ This image is a little rough around the edges, with cut up samples and scribbles, however I wanted to post it as it shows a part of my process which I don't always share.
This is the plan for my new silk range which will consist of 12 ties, 12 narrow scarves and 12 wide scarves.
I lay out my samples in this way to enable me to visualise the range as a whole collection. Making sure that I have both balanced the colours well and created designs which are unique yet work together.
Having a board like this also helps me to keep track when making my sample collection as I constantly have all of the designs in front of me.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to this wonderful woman who I am lucky enough to call my sister @llouisanancy .
This is her a while ago wearing a bespoke wide silk scarf, which will be making a come back (in new designs and colour ways) in my new accessories range coming in June.
HAPPY FRIDAY XOXOXOX
I wrote a guest blog post for sustainable manufacturing sourcing company @supplycompass as part of their 'one minute with' series, which is now live to read!
I talk about my story, my process and my views on the future of the handmade, as well as why a sustainable approach to purchasing new items is so important.

MY MACHINE ~ This hefty piece of machinery is my pride and joy and what I (at present) make absolutely everything on. She is an Italian 12gg hand flat industrial knitting machine, made by Santagostino a very long time ago! She weighs over 200kg, is approximately 2 metres wide and is totally mechanical. She is an absolutely wonderful machine but also temperamental at times... It is 6 years since I first put my hands on an industrial knitting machine like this and totally fell in love with it! I vowed that I would one day buy my own and I am proud that I have achieved that!
I have had this beauty for 3 years now and whilst I am definitely more of an expert than I was, the learning on these just never stops.
Swipe right for more close up photos of her!
Bronze silk layered over warm cashmere colours •••••• A slow Monday for me after a hectic but wonderful weekend. Making yet another to do list of my studio plan for the week, who else is happy that the temperature is back above 5' ?!? #oliviajholland#thelisboncollection#silk#cashmere
#tbt to this very old fashion illustration inspired by my graduate collection photoshoot. Producing new work is always exciting but I also love looking through things I have done in the past to see what new inspiration I can draw from them now.
A Room Of One's Own ~ My work space. The change around of my studio marks the end of my first year @cockpitarts
I was lucky enough to receive the Cockpit Arts/Haberdashers Award for my first year here, which granted me a wonderfully large studio space free of charge. I am so grateful for that opportunity as it enabled me to develop parts of my business which without it, I wouldn't have had the finance to do. The award has now come to an end and it is time to adjust, plan, and throw everything I have got into this coming year !
1. Machine comb
3. Weight 1
4. Machine needles
5. 1 prong transfer tool
6. 2 prong transfer tool
7. Weight 2
8. Hook to change needles on needle bed
All of these things are needed to create even the tiniest sample on my machine.
