Spoken History (Ghair Sarkari Tareekh) in Oldtown with Velji Patel under Pre Partition category of interviewes. He was interviewed by Shaheen Nauman for (Ghair Sarkari Tareekh) GST - Summer Internship Program 2018
Velji Patel was born in Karachi and has lived in the area for decades. He is the librarian at the Swami Narayan Mandir's Library, before that he has worked at the Port and the Indian High Commission. He spoke of a time when relations between the Hindu and Muslim community were good and cordial and how the Babri mosque incident affected those relations. According to him Muslims and Hindus celebrated their festivities together as one and different communities lived together in harmony. He spoke of the changing landscape through the changes in the transportation and the way transport has evolved, the existence of trams. He was in favor of old heritage buildings to be conserved.
Spoken History (Ghair Sarkari Tareekh) GST in Oldtown is a project of collecting narratives of the residents of the area, who lived through 1947 Partition (The Migration of millions of people) for scholars and future generations, who want to know the past of the area.
These narratives will define the Old Town in social context, it's demographics and history. • To understand the transformation of the old town over time. • To use the lived experiences of people as the primary source of historical events. • To realize that in order to understand and fix the problems of the future we need to work our way back and understand our past.
