It’s like that old Brady Bunch episode when Jan has a jealous meltdown because everyone’s always talking about Marsha, “Marsha! Marsha! Marsha!” In this case it’s Oakland. Oakland is also a Rural Garden Cemetery but on a much grander scale with a WAY big budget but that does not mean that Old Clarkesville Cemetery cannot be every bit as charming as Oakland. We hope to create wonderful moments like this at OCC. #oldclarkesvillecemetery#clarkesvillega#oldcemetery#ruralgardencemetery#historyinstone
I love seeing old cemeteries by the side of the road. It's always intriguing to see some of the dates on the stones and wonder what a day in the life of some of these people were like. I took this shot this morning in Lebanon, Maine.
Old Freiburg cemetery was used in the 17 and 1800s. This blacksmith's grave marker has a nail ring through it's cheek. Behind the skull sits a small toad. Apparently his assistant and young wife killed the old blacksmith in his sleep by hammering a nail in his head, covering the nail with his hair. Soon after the funeral the couple got married. A few years later, the blacksmith’s remains were exhumed because the cemetery ran out of burial space. When the gravedigger opened the coffin a toad crawled out of the skull which fell to the side, revealing the nail. The gravedigger reported his discovery and the murderers were caught and executed.
