Treepose - Vrksasana. Great for creating balance, grounding, strengthening hips, legs, and shoulders.
Firmly plant your foot into the floor. Root down through the big toe ball joint and center of heel. Imagine spreading your roots deep into the earth. Fix your eyes on a spot -drishti- and experiament with your arms. Begin with foot on ankle or shin and when you've built the flexibility up to place your foot on you thigh firmly press your heel into your thigh and thigh into foot. This will help keep you firm and stable while also massaging your liver meridian.
Avoid placing your foot on your knee.
If you feel u steady stand against a wall for balance but try not to rely on the wall.
When you are comfortable with tree try taking your leg out in front and out to the side, using a strap or holding your big toe.
Play, explore, have fun.
And so we made it through the shortest day and longest night of the year.
The new solar year is upon us as the earth begins her tilt back towards the sun. & so it feels like a good time to realign and set some new intentions for the year ahead.
By setting intentions at this winter solstice we lay out a path that can light the way through the darkness of winter, and lead us like a compass towards our highest potential.
So take a moment to draw your awareness inwards, seal an intention and begin to let go of anything that no longer serves you, so that you may clear the slate for all that is coming your way!

Gratitude! Yup I know I keep on harping on about it but it truly is the magic elixir of everything!!!! Want abundance?... Be grateful for what you already have.
Look around you and ooze gratitude to everything you see.
See something someone has and it makes you feel less than because you don't have it. Send them love and blessings and then gleefully say "That's for me!" Want good health?
Love the body you have right now! Love the healthy people you see around you. Love the organic produce that is coming more and more into our grocers.
Love nature. Look at yourself in the mirror and love you!
Drink more water, eat more veggies, go to yoga ;) Want a loving relationship?
Be grateful for the relationships you have right now, think about all the positive and great aspects of the people in your life right now.
See some lovey-dovey couple opposite you, don't squirm and say get a room, look at them lovingly and declare.. "That's for me!"
but most importantly list off 10 things you love about yourself.
Look at yourself in the mirror... and tell yourself why you are great and way someone would be lucky to have you.
Be honest with yourself, if you don't think someone would be lucky to have you...then get to work becoming someone worth having!
How do you do that?
Go back to the top of this post and start reading it all over again ;) Then get to work loving on all the things, people, and your own glorious self right now!
Over summer I teamed up with @powerlivingnz! We are so lucky to be living in this beautiful city that also has access to these amazing locations! More of my favourite shots over on the blog. @justine.hamill @warriorjase

Warrior 1 or high lunge?
The difference is subtle but important to know. High lunge - all toes point forward, feet remain hip width apart and are better able to square to the front. You also have access to twists and knee bends.
#Warrior1 or #Virabhadrasana1 - the back heel comes down to the floor and big toe points up to the top corner of your mat. Make sure your foot is not pointing to the side, this is not warrior 2.
Feet can be hip width for balance or you can line both front and back heels up. Try and square your hips as best you can.
In both lunges don't allow your front knee to move past your ankle. Drop your tail bone to the floor and gently draw your belly button in and up for greater back support.
These poses are interchangable and really depend on the flexibility of your back ankle. If in doubt, use the high lunge position.
Play with both, expiramenting with arm position.

Did you know every single cell in your body has its own memory of every single thing that happens in your life.. that’s cool!
When we drop our awareness out of the mind space and into the feeling space we begin to have a more intimate conversation with our inner wisdom.
Ladies if you are ready to create a deeper conversation with your inner wisdom book your spot (link is in my bio)

FREEDOM & SYNCHRONICITY
The ability and wisdom of the human body fascinates me.
The experience that is possible for us is vast.
Yet it’s so common for us to settle into habit and routine.
On our yoga mats we get comfortable moving in a particular way, and we develop physical movement patterns in our body.
In our day to day life we get comfortable in what we know, routine and stability often creates a feeling of safety. Anything outside of this is often shied away from, because who knows what the unknown could hold.
Yet there is so much magic in the unknown.
If you move in a way that you haven’t moved before, you are having a new type of conversation with your body.
There’s a certain sense of freedom stepping into the unknown, a curiosity that is soul nourishing.
Broadening the conversation with your body syncs you up with a deeper sense of awareness.
Do you want to feel more free in your body?
Do you want to explore your inner wisdom?

Day 4 my firefighter/yogi story continues to unfold—so my yoga training begins, 6am and we have our first group practice and I can still remember sitting the room and seeing two people that would inspire my practice: Dylan Werner (@dylanwerneryoga) and Ashley Galvin (@ashleygalvinyoga ). These two, along with the other teachers at Yandara changed everything in my life. Dylan showed me how being a firefighter and a yogi could interconnect (he lived it) and be strongly male, yet also able to share emotion, love and understanding to everyone around me. Ashley showed a tenderness and genuine care for everyone she met. I hold these two in the highest regard and love to see the amazing changes they have made for thousands around the world. The experiences and life-changing events of my time there were so numerous. I shed my old self and the new began; the true metamorphosis. When my training came closer to conclusion, Shane, our guru, told me the first time he saw me “that I had no idea what I was in for”: 100% true. —I came back to New Zealand and I was completely different, a whole new expression of myself. —life takes some crazy turns and by this time a position in NZFS opened for me to apply and so I went through the whole recruitment process, like I had never been a firefighter or had worked for a year in NZ already. While on a plane back to Canada, with my family left in New Zealand, I got a job with NZFS...I arrived in Edmonton, Nov 11, 2012 it was -25C: bloody cold!!! Life was very chaotic and I had a ton of mixed emotions, I went back to my friends, my old job with Edmonton fire and my old yoga studio (even applied to teach yoga there). Sonya and kids stayed in NZ and I had some huge things to tackle and deal with. Do I leave my home, my job and my secure life and head around the world to do this other life? I honestly don’t know how it all worked as there were so many doors to walk through and challenges to face. Someone looking inside would probably have said we had it easy and it all worked how we planned but honestly we were flying by the seat of our pants with no idea why we wanted to move to NZ and give it all up...continued in next post
Part 2 of my journey of how I became a firefighter/yogi:
So my friend challenged me to try a Bikram Yoga class and said it would be the hardest thing to do. I remember scoffing, and saying “yeah right”, with a laugh. But he was adamant and said it was so hot and hard and I would never sweat like that. So I gave it a try and went to a Bikram yoga studio in South Edmonton (where I’m from). Well if you’ve ever done Bikram yoga back in the day, there is a particular odor that hits your nose from the carpet, and the sweat, and the numerous humans there...😜. Well I went to the class, and when I arrived I was the 50th person in the room (their capacity) and I couldn’t believe there were so many people in the room. I found myself sandwiched between the 1st and 3rd row and right against the wall with inches to spare between me and the people in front across behind, and beside me. —
Well that class was hard, I was an immovable rock and couldn’t finish the sequence. By the time I got to camel pose my head was swimming, I was uncomfortable, and then it was finally over. I left the studio and thought, wow, how could something be so hard when I thought it would be so easy. I wouldn’t say I was hooked at first go but I did buy an intro pass and so with that meant I had to get full value and attend more classes before it expired. So I did, I went to classes, even at the expense of my BJJ training. -—
I started to notice how I was able to withstand the practice and I was able to actually find some sort of form for the poses. I told my firefighter friends that they should try hot yoga with me. A couple of them came, and I noticed that was was starting to really enjoy how the practice was transforming my sore and aching body into something different. I totally was into the physical practice and didn’t meditate or seek higher expressions of yoga, for me it was all physical and I was starting to love it. —Well, one of those mates that came to the Bikram class was my friend Scott and he was an exchange firefighter from New Zealand. We became fast friends and he came to some hot classes to see what this Canadian guy was “on about”(insert kiwi phrase)...follow me to catch part 3

Hanuman asana. Hanuman (the monkey god) striding over the mountain...Tash trying to 🤣. All my life splits have been out of reach...and now I'm just a few inches off the ground woohoo. Thanks yoga asana.
Meanwhile this is a fun little thing to throw into your sequence, instead of the half split pose, to test out your hamstring flexibility...and the rest 😁.
In case you are feeling like the splits are wayyy out of reach for you, I don't do drills or fanatically practice any pose to perfection, ever. I just do my regular flows (occasionally) and teach a bunch of classes weekly, and I still find my strength flexibility and focus greatly increased. Plus my body looks way better now than when I was 18. So you don't have to be fanatical about acheiving a certain look or pose, unless that's your thing. The main thing to remember is to breathe, be kind to yourself, and practice yogasana because it makes you feel good. Nothing more nothing less, the magic will happen from there ❤.
Is anyone else sick to death of social media? Is it just another way to inflate our egos, separate ourselves, make others feel like they should be better, another way to “not accept” ourselves as we are, to inflate aesthetic beauty, to care more what “others” think, “like”. Has it done it’s dash? .
While I was away in Argentina, Brasil, (this was my 6th visit) I am reminded of, poverty (up north particularly), 3rd world challenge,, how hard and fast we live and work, the little rest time we have, the pressure we put on ourselves - the siesta is one marvellous cultural invention ☺️.
Narcissism is rife and it’s killing us, separating us, making us sad, depressed, lonely. The family I stayed with have 7 children, little money - 5 kids to a bedroom, no fancy clothes and belongings, yet they are happy, they have faith, connection, love and TIME for each other. Eating is a ceremony. Nothing runs on time, sometimes frustrating but often refreshing, a go with the flow acceptance.
We are so privileged in NZ, fresh food, veges, water, access to so so many things we take for granted.
This week I’ll be focussing on mindful awareness, about how we TOGETHER as a community can have gratitude for our lives as they are - become more connected, more loving, see each other more clearly, on and off the mat. I don’t profess to know more than anyone else about that but I can hold space for you in the Yoga room, I come with years of experience both in Yoga and in life and what I love about sharing Yoga (unity) is that you are getting atunement not only for your physical body, but for your mind, soul & heart - this style of holistic nourishment is more important than EVER - and it has the capacity to affect all that you come into contact with, we are the leaders of a critical time in human conciousness and evolution, be an active part of that, make a difference.
If you’re keen, I’ll be teaching the following 11 classes this week:
Tuesday: 5.30pm Vinyasa, 7.00pm Yin
Weds: 9.30am Yin, 12.15pm Vinyasa, 1.30pm Meditation

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes, don’t resist them— that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever in whatever way they like.” Lao Tzu
Last night I was challenged by @glorialatham to not resist the change and go out and be bold and create the life I want to live. So here I am, learning to accept my reality, life in Aotearoa, yoga and firefighting...it’s just who I am and who I am still becoming.
I wanted to announce that I have joined the team of New Zealand’s International Yoga Festival and want to invite all of you to come and join us from 22th - 25th of February to the journey of “Embracing Your Inner Mastery”.
