Looking forward to finish this semester 😩 it's so hard to stay active when you're taking your finals, work full-time and is currently planning a wedding 🙆 ( I'm not complaining tho, since I love keeping myself busy all the time)
Trigger Warning! ⚠️ _____
The Bangladesh Genocide, a period of fear, loss, trauma, sacrifice, hope, perseverance and faith begun under Yahya Khan, the third president to rule Pakistan. Khan used his power and ruthless tactics to suppress Bangladeshis in an attempt to make everyone into better Pakistani Muslims. Thankfully, his attempts were futile and Bangladesh gained independence. Since its independence in 1971, Bangladesh and Bangladeshis have worked hard to reform the country. So, why is that a country built from love, forgot to help its women?
During the Liberation War, the Pakistani army used rape as a tactic to wipe out the Bangladeshi race. Bangladeshi women were targeted by the numbers and were forced to live in rape camps. Yes, you read that correctly. The Pakistani government set up rape camps to rape our women repeatedly to impregnate them. This was a devastating period for Bangladeshi families and more importantly, Bangladeshi women.
Our women suffered and they are still suffering. After the war was over, women who were raped were victim shamed and humiliated. Women who became pregnant implemented unsafe methods to perform abortions. These women, continued to be targets even in their own home! While Sheikh Mujib, the founding father of Bangladesh, called them “War Heroines”, society looked at them as broken women who tarnished their family’s honor.
In a beautiful world, these women would be celebrated. They would receive help to navigate through their trauma to lead a truly stable and happy life. But, that hasn’t been the case for many. Can you imagine the amount of mental stress these women live in? The depression and anxiety they are masking because they can’t even identify their battle with mental illnesses? How awful is it that we can’t help our mothers and grandmothers receive the love, care, and honor they rightfully deserve? 🇧🇩
