Probiotics are supplemental beneficial bacteria. They help to balance and support the microbial ecology in your gut. I use the metaphors of a garden or better yet, a city (for my urban demographic), inside our GI tract when I'm educating my patients.
Think of the 100 trillion microorganisms, primarily bacteria, living inside your gut as residents of your inner city. We want a lot of healthy, productive residents (beneficial bacteria) who will contribute to society, and very few criminals (pathogenic bacteria) who might harm other residents and deteriorate the quality of life in our city.
Probiotics are as good as you take them. Think of them as visiting peacemakers on a temporary visa. They have a "pass through" benefit, as they do not colonize the gut effectively, so they don't take up permanent residency. But they are vitally helpful, and if you have taken antibiotics or NSAIDs like ibuprofen, they are absolutely necessary. So take your probiotics daily.
CRITERIA FOR A GREAT PROBIOTIC
1. Diversity - you want a multi-strain probiotic that delivers multiple species into the gut. Again, think of a city: multi-cultural rather than homogeneous.
2. Potency - look for 10 billion to preferably 50 billion microorganisms / CFUs (Colony Forming Units)
3. Viability - this is most important, so you're not wasting your money. Choose a probiotic from a manufacturer that guarantees the potency and viability upon ingestion, not just at time of manufacture. Those billions of microbes could all die off bw the time of manufacture to the time you actually swallow the capsule.
And as always, eat your fibrous plant foods. Leafy greens and resistant starches in particular (read my recent post on a "Big MAC diet"). This is THE most important factor in maintaining a healthy gut.
Day 6 of “12 Days of Health” is all about gut health! The gut microbiome plays a very important role in our overall health. That's because it's the site for digestion and absorption, where 70% of the immune system is housed, and where brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine are created. . . .
The gut microbiome is comprised of “good” and “bad” bacteria. Good bacteria thrives off of a healthy lifestyle (such as consuming nutrient-dense foods, managing stress levels, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep at night) while “bad” bacteria thrives off of an unhealthy one (such as consuming a lot of sugary and processed foods, high stress levels, not getting enough sleep at night, or having a negative mindset). . . .
So the goal is to have more “good” bacteria than “bad” bacteria so you can have better digestion, less sugar cravings, more energy, lose weight, have better moods, etc. . . .
That's where probiotics come in! They're a source of “good” bacteria that can help support your gut. You can find them in items such as sauerkraut, plain Greek yogurt, miso, fermented vegetables, or kombucha. If you don’t consume probiotic-rich foods on a regular basis or have problems with digestion (like bloating, constipation, gas, or pain) taking a probiotic supplement can give you the extra support you may need. I've found probiotics to be extremely helpful for many of my clients, as well as for myself. . . .

This @sunfood organic chocolate superfood mix is soo delicious! Tastes just like chocolate milk!🍫I’ve tried literally dozens of different types of protein powders and superfood/greens mixes, but taste wise this is by far the yummiest😋 I got this sample recently at a fundraiser and am so glad I discovered it 😀
I love that it has coconut sugar 🥥 as it’s low glycemic and doesn’t have that funky aftertaste you often get with stevia. The fact that the organic brown rice protein is sprouted makes it more nutritious as it’s easier for your body to absorb the nutrients -same with sprouted tofu. It contains 13 superfoods, listed in the ingredients below.
While it is not cheap at $60 for the large 2.2 lb size it is high quality, organic, and delicious/nutritious 🤗which isn’t always easy to come by. There also is a 25% discount off your first order on the sunfood website. I will have to order it post haste as this was just the 8oz sample, and I will run out soon since I’m having it twice a day! 😬.
It contains 10g of protein, 20% of the RDA of fiber and 15% iron, etc. plus tons of essential and branched chain amino acids. Here are the ingredients : Sprouted whole grain brown rice protein*, coconut palm sugar*, chia seed powder*, lucuma powder*, cacao powder*, carob powder*, goji berry powder*, maca powder*, banana powder*, acai powder*, camu camu powder*, pink himalayan salt†, vanilla powder*. *Certified Organic.
Thank you @sunfood for making such an awesome product! 👏🌞#notsponsored

Stress is the body’s way of responding to any kind of threat or to perform under demanding circumstances. As well, our nervous system isn’t very good at differentiating between physical and emotional threats. If you are stressed over a pile of bills, or an argument, your body can react just as strongly as if you are faced with a life-or-death situation.
In our demanding lives the constant release of cortisol and adrenaline can disrupt nearly every system in your body. It can upset the digestive and reproductive systems, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, suppress the immune system, and speed up the aging process. Perhaps surprisingly, it can even rewire the brain, leaving you vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.

Day 4 of #HolidaySweetsWeek ✨🎁🎄is up with yet another can't-skip holiday cookie recipe ... gingerbread cookies! This recipe was tested by not one, but two of my favorite recipe testers (as well as myself of course) and received glowing reviews. It's simple (one bowl friends 🙌), delicious, and full of goodness. You can make gingerbread men, or any other holiday shape you prefer, and ice them or not. Thanks to @espere1215 for the beautiful capture 📸and @maalleninteriors for always being ready and excited to test #grainfree#nutrientrich recipes 😘. ⠀
1 1/2 c almond meal⠀
1/4 c arrowroot, tapioca, or cornstarch⠀
1/2 tsp salt⠀
1/4 tsp baking soda⠀
3/4 tsp cinnamon⠀
2 tsp ground ginger, or use freshly-grated ginger for a spicier cookie if you prefer that taste (we do!)⠀
pinch of ground black pepper ⠀
1/4 c maple syrup⠀
1 Tbsp molasses (blackstrap is ideal)
2 Tbsp coconut oil, melted and cooled ⠀
1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. ⠀
2. Combine the almond meal, starch, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and pepper in a large mixing bowl. ⠀
3. Add in maple syrup, molasses, and coconut oil and stir again until a dough has formed, then place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (or until you are ready to bake). ⠀
4. Dust a large piece of parchment paper with extra starch to prevent sticking then using a rolling pin or wine bottle, roll out the dough until it's about 1/4 inch thick.
5. Again, dust your cookie cutters with extra starch to prevent sticking before pressing into the dough to make shapes.
6. Bake for 10-12 minutes for soft cookies or longer if you prefer them crispier.⠀
7. See yesterdays post (December 12, 2018) for a quick icing recipe if you prefer to ice them, or just use dye free sprinkles to decorate like these! ⠀
Fire Cider 🔥 Tiss’ the season to blast your body with this shit. This is my first year making this stuff and after waiting 6 weeks I’m so excited to finally try it. Fire cider is a revitalization of the traditional combination of vinegar, honey and herbs—known as an oxymel. This modern recipe uses apple cider vinegar as the base to ferment a combination of immune boosting plants (usually garlic, onion, horseradish and chilies). The acidity of the apple cider helps to extract the active compounds from the botanicals, while the fermentation allows for easy assimilation of these compounds. What you’re left with is a potent immune-boosting, digestive tonic. The accessibility of this tonic is also something to consider. The ingredients are cheap and readily available while the preparation of the tonic itself is simple. Thank you plant medicine 🙏🌿

GABA rice is extremely nutritious. It is very easy to cook the yummy 😋 rice in the photo - just add lots of chopped vegetables and condiments to the water and cook all together: red pepper, courgette, onion, carrot, green beans, garlic, radish, sea salt, black pepper, paprika, turmeric. -
Organic Sprouted Black GABA Rice is made from top quality whole grain Homnin Rice which is naturally germinated before milling. The germination process encourages production of vitamins, nutrients and amino acids, especially GABA.
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a chemical that is made in the brain.
GABA can relive anxiety, improve mood, reduce symptoms of PMS and treat ADHD. It is also used for promoting lean muscle growth, burning fat, stabilizing blood pressure and relieving pain.
GABA rice is not cheap (about £5 for 500g) but it's worth it. Are you going to give it a go?
If you couldn’t tell from my stories recently, I’ve been absolutely loving the @noevilfoods bbq pulled ‘pork’! I wanted to share a couple of the yummy ways I’ve been eating it.☺️ •

BLENDING VS JUICING •
One of the most frequent questions we get is whether juicing or blender is better? 🤔
Both are great for different reasons! One is not necessarily better than the other. •
Juicing removes the insoluble fiber making it easier on the digestive system and leading to increased nutrient absorption. Fiber can be rough on your GI tract, especially if your having any gut issues. •
Vegetable juice is not a complete meal and you should have healthy fats & proteins in addition to your juice. **Only buy/drink fresh-pressed juice •
Blending is better as meal replacement since you can add all sorts of fats, proteins, superfood powders, etc. and create a nourishing/filling meal. •
Plus you get the insoluble fiber which can help with elimination and gut health. (if you don't have trouble w/digestion) •
Wether you are juicing or blending avoid adding excess fruit and stick to more vegetables. •
