Probiotics are supplemental beneficial bacteria. They help to balance and support the microbial ecology in your gut. I use the metaphors of a garden or better yet, a city (for my urban demographic), inside our GI tract when I'm educating my patients.
Think of the 100 trillion microorganisms, primarily bacteria, living inside your gut as residents of your inner city. We want a lot of healthy, productive residents (beneficial bacteria) who will contribute to society, and very few criminals (pathogenic bacteria) who might harm other residents and deteriorate the quality of life in our city.
Probiotics are as good as you take them. Think of them as visiting peacemakers on a temporary visa. They have a "pass through" benefit, as they do not colonize the gut effectively, so they don't take up permanent residency. But they are vitally helpful, and if you have taken antibiotics or NSAIDs like ibuprofen, they are absolutely necessary. So take your probiotics daily. 
CRITERIA FOR A GREAT PROBIOTIC
1. Diversity - you want a multi-strain probiotic that delivers multiple species into the gut. Again, think of a city: multi-cultural rather than homogeneous.
2. Potency - look for 10 billion to preferably 50 billion microorganisms / CFUs (Colony Forming Units)
3. Viability - this is most important, so you're not wasting your money. Choose a probiotic from a manufacturer that guarantees the potency and viability upon ingestion, not just at time of manufacture. Those billions of microbes could all die off bw the time of manufacture to the time you actually swallow the capsule.

And as always, eat your fibrous plant foods. Leafy greens and resistant starches in particular (read my recent post on a "Big MAC diet"). This is THE most important factor in maintaining a healthy gut.

Day 4 of #HolidaySweetsWeek ✨🎁🎄is up with yet another can't-skip holiday cookie recipe ... gingerbread cookies!  This recipe was tested by not one, but two of my favorite recipe testers (as well as myself of course) and received glowing reviews.  It's simple (one bowl friends 🙌), delicious, and full of goodness.  You can make gingerbread men, or any other holiday shape you prefer, and ice them or not.  Thanks to @espere1215 for the beautiful capture 📸and @maalleninteriors for always being ready and excited to test #grainfree #nutrientrich recipes 😘. ⠀
INGREDIENTS⠀
1 1/2 c almond meal⠀
1/4 c arrowroot, tapioca, or cornstarch⠀
1/2 tsp salt⠀
1/4 tsp baking soda⠀
3/4 tsp cinnamon⠀
2 tsp ground ginger, or use freshly-grated ginger for a spicier cookie if you prefer that taste (we do!)⠀
pinch of ground black pepper ⠀
1/4 c maple syrup⠀
1 Tbsp molasses (blackstrap is ideal)
2 Tbsp coconut oil, melted and cooled ⠀
⠀
INSTRUCTIONS⠀
1. Preheat the oven to 350F.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. ⠀
2.  Combine the almond meal, starch, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, and pepper in a large mixing bowl. ⠀
3. Add in maple syrup, molasses, and coconut oil and stir again until a dough has formed, then place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (or until you are ready to bake). ⠀
4. Dust a large piece of parchment paper with extra starch to prevent sticking then using a rolling pin or wine bottle, roll out the dough until it's about 1/4 inch thick. 
5.  Again, dust your cookie cutters with extra starch to prevent sticking before pressing into the dough to make shapes. 
6. Bake for 10-12 minutes for soft cookies or longer if you prefer them crispier.⠀
7.  See yesterdays post (December 12, 2018) for a quick icing recipe if you prefer to ice them, or just use dye free sprinkles to decorate like these! ⠀

BLENDING VS JUICING •
One of the most frequent questions we get is whether juicing or blender is better? 🤔

Both are great for different reasons! One is not necessarily better than the other. •
Juicing removes the insoluble fiber making it easier on the digestive system and leading to increased nutrient absorption. Fiber can be rough on your GI tract, especially if your having any gut issues. •
Vegetable juice is not a complete meal and you should have healthy fats & proteins in addition to your juice. **Only buy/drink fresh-pressed juice •
Blending is better as meal replacement since you can add all sorts of fats, proteins, superfood powders, etc. and create a nourishing/filling meal. •
