'M/F' Influences and Favourites, PART 12:
Fall Out Boy • "Folie À Deux" • 2008
This is my fave @FallOutBoy album and certainly the one that's given me the most joy and singalong fun over the last decade. Yet another great album mastered by the legendary Ted Jensen at @SterlingSound (obvs! 😜)! From the first air-punching guitar chords and pounding drums of opener "Disloyal Order Of Water Buffaloes", the melodic relentlessness, lyrical wizardry, HUGE choruses, multi-layered vocal harmonies, youthfully exuberant yet technically complex pop-rock energy and pure, upbeat fun remain turned up full throughout. Every song overflows with quirky lyrics and massive hooks. Always something new to discover in the huge @therealnealavron production and addictive @patrickstump vocal lines. I just can't help myself harmonising along to every song at the top of my lungs with a massive grin! Typically fun song titles. Guest vocalists aplenty (Debbie Harry, Elvis Costello, @panicatthedisco's #BrendanUrie , @liltunechi, @traviemccoy, to name just a few). Guest production from @pharrell/The Neptunes. A kickass @MichaelJackson cover featuring @JohnMayer. And to top it off, this looks & sounds particularly stunning on delicious ltd. edition double red & yellow transparent vinyl!! 💛❤️💛❤️💛❤️ I love every song, but personal top faves = 👇🏼
• "(Coffee's For Closers)"
• "Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes" • "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet"
• "27" • "Tiffany Blews"
• "What A Catch, Donnie"
Jon Hopkins - Singularity (2018, Domino)
A selection from this was played on @bbc6music yesterday, which shitty through phone speakers (I was at work), but served as a reminder that I owned it and had only listened to half of it. So here we are. Full play today.
I’m not sure that it’s as transporting as Immunity, but I am sure that it gets better the further through the album that one gets. I have the suspicion that this is a substantial piece of work that will take many listens to fully appreciate. And then, perhaps, we will hear it as Hopkins’ masterpiece.
Also - I’m not really one for colour vinyl these days, but the blue alongside the cover looks bloody spiffing. And what a beautiful cover that is. Really.
There are not many artists who exude a whole feeling anymore. Something so big , and so grand , and so meaningful. But, she does in the purest of ways, an example of how an artist has helped me in my own life in ways I don’t even understand 🔮❤️
