New release tasting with @otrosvinos
10am - 6pm downstairs @terroirswinebar
We will be showing these two from Sebastian Fleuret for the first time.
He has been farming two hectares of Chenin, Cabernet Franc and Grolleau Gris across four parcels in Faye d'Anjou and Beaulieu sur Layon.
Sadly, 2017 is his last vintage – as a government employee it is no longer financially viable for him to continue. Sebastian runs the winery in an extension of his house. The barrels live in an insulated lean-to at the bottom of the garden. He stopped using sulphur in the winemaking process in 2012.
2017 Rouge Against The Machine – Cabernet Franc, Grolleau Gris
Juicy whole-bunch 50/50 blend.
Five-day whole-bunch maceration, vinified all in fibreglass
2016 Refraire Le Monde – Chenin
Chenin from sand and schist soils. 60% of grapes vinified in barrel, 40% in fibreglass
This grape used to be a prolifically planted white varietal in CA and one of the earlier Viniferas planted in the New World. But as the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc craze moved in, it fell by the wayside and the vines got ripped out and replaced by more profitable varietals. Today, what little is left planted of it in California vineyards is relegated to cheap jug or bulk wines, or as fillers in inexpensive blends. We’d like to change that. We hope that by treating it with the love and respect it once had will bring out its shy inner beauty. But maybe all the whisperings about it’s shortcomings are true? That no good wine can be made from this varietal? We hope to prove them wrong in 2019 or (maybe) 2020. —————————————————————————————————— #naturalwine#naturalwines#naturalwinemaking#vitisvinifera#qvevri#amphora#amphorawines#rawwine#noso2#veganwines#mysterywine#raregrapes#ketowine
Our Ranchero was a little too small for our first harvest, as you can see. Even though the harvesting bins fit, it wouldn’t be able to take the load. Grapes are heavy! So we went a got a huge GMC dually, that promptly broke down literally 10 miles from seller..🙄 Had to tow it back to seller (who thankfully refunded us) whilst calling on replacement trucks on Craigslist from the tow truck! Just in time we found a replacement Ford F-350 and drove all night for our inaugural Sonoma picking. Phew.——————————————————————————
Cresce su marne grigie e rosse, e in cantina vede solo acciaio, lieviti indigeni. Fa volentieri a meno dell'aggiunta di solforosa.
Un vino dalla grande bevibilità, perfetto per l'aperitivo, ma ottimo compagno anche della tavola.
well, Oriol was really stressed because of harvest and I was stressed because my little magazine is printing TODAY so instead of being professionals we just drank his amazing wines!! (actually, he was totally relaxed and in control of the winery.) was a great time but I think the true winners were the little gatitos who snuck up and stole an entire hunk of cheese! more serious/relevant notes from the brief visit are in Stories now. lucky Australia will be getting a shipment of Oriol’s delicious and totally unique #noso2 juice very soon via #aristologistimports ✨
2018 Gewürztraminer at Columbia Gorge @montebrunowines. High-drama canyon terroir this, spliced by the Colombia river. In temperament and climatic terms, this Oregon/Washington border territory is a kind of Austria x Pacific Northwest: a gift for cool-climate varietals such as Pinot; Gerwurz. Still a relatively young wine culture relative to Napa and Sonoma but despite the chilled vibe, moving fast. One to watch very hard. ⠀
Joe at Montebruno Wines works with a cluster of organic and biodynamic vineyards of which Oak Ridge is one. Situated at 1400 ft overlooking the White Salmon river (a Colombia River tributary) these high altitude rainlands get a good drench of sunlight and bring the old vine grapes on to spicy perfection. Joe's style is clean and straight. Wines that are a direct line to the land. ⠀
The very first UK shipment of his Gewurztraminer is due to dock in keg format end of the month. Strictly preview quantities of the '17 vintage plus '17 and '14 Pinot Noir - - DM us for details. #gewurztraminer#oregon#portland#nattywine#naturalwine#keg#noso2
Meagan & James Becker are doing some great stuff out of their organic Ablington Vineyard in the Hunter (as well as California). This little Pinot Meunier pét nat was made with organic fruit from Tumbarumba, whole bunch-pressed straight to tank & bottled early for some dizzy fizzy. Unfiltered, unfined, no added sulphur. It’s a frisky whirlpool of strawberry yoghurt, peach, watermelon, spice and red snakes with crunchy acidity. Crackle & pop game strong 💥
‘Lilac wine is sweet and heady...’ James wrote about it, Jeff sung about it and now George made it. ‘Lilac wine’ (2017) is part of the debut release from GEORGE aka Alice and Lucy aka Cultivar Vinos (importers of our favourite Chilean potions). Sustainably farmed Pinot from the Anderson Hill Vineyard, Adelaide Hills, underwent 5 days cab mac and 5 days pigéage before being pressed to barrel and bottled with no added sulphur. A soft spritz ushers in effervescent waves of cherry, red berries and spearmint. Total summer gobstopper 👅
"Si tu as aimé le rosé de Pfifferling, goûte donc ce métisse de Maxime Magnon, c'est impeccable et dans le même esprit" m'a dit Alain Bosc aux plaisir de la table à Nîmes. Comme d'habitude : 🎯... Encore plus quand je découvre la belle histoire de Maxime Magnon, de son amour pour le travail avec les animaux et ses alchimies en gros foudres de bois...
• Savennières coulée de serrant 2011 by Nicolas Joly.
