Day one of 3 Day Refresh complete. This is a great plan to drop a few pounds of bloat post Vegas trip and get me back to a healthy nutrition plan. It's no secret that I struggle making healthy eating a lifestyle. When I am "on-plan" I am on and am successful in losing weight. Here's to getting back "on". Getting those little colored containers out again as winging it right now is not working. I am going to be combining Portion Fix with 2B Mindset principles. If you close your eyes and eat these tomato chips you may just think you’re in Italy 🇮🇹. I literally ate four tomatoes and I didn’t even realize it! ⠀⠀
If you have a food dehydrator (lucky you!) use it, if not 🙋🏼‍♀️ turn your oven to 250F. ⠀⠀
•4 regular red beefsteak tomatoes(Bob the tomato anyone?) sliced about 1/4 inch thick. (I was able to fit 2 tomatoes per sheet pan. This will vary by the tomato size and how many slices you get.)
•Bake for 3 hours at 250F on a Silpat mat if possible. The Silpat had much better results than the vegetable grilling pan. If they are still soggy keep baking. •Once the tomatoes are crispy sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. •Enjoy! .

Years back, I contemplated to sign up for any courses relating to health and nutrition. For practicality sake, a diploma/degree in Nutrition is a sound choice in Singapore. It means a high chance of being an employee with an institution. It means stable income...

But my body was fighting to commit to what the logical mind thought was right. I knew there is something else waiting for me. A different path. Not a dietician working regular hours doling out one size fits all meal plans...

Waiting for emotional clarity was a suffering process. Any emotional beings will agree that one can't rush to make a decision. The feeling has to be just right, not on a high nor a low. It means being okay to sit out the fears of wanting something different, the butterflies in the tummy, the spurts of excitement as I mulled over my choices and their consequences. 🤔

And I am glad I trusted my feelings then. I enrolled into Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Every module, every teaching resonate with me. I cheer the approach of individualized nutrition for each person (goodbye homogenized eating)! 😉
.
The best part? Nutrition is secondary. Relationships, emotions and spirituality are part of primary food - building blocks to good health too! 👊 I was prancing in joy! Something most people will push aside and definitely rarely discussed in mainstream healthcare.

Long story short 😜, it is easy to just treat symptoms. It is easy to follow herd mentality of eating. Wellness is more than that. And I am #grateful for the various learnings and being able to incorporate them into my life. It opened up my world of alternative healing modalities and validated what I have learnt with essential oils usage, looking at a person as a whole.

What I practise is making its impact with this angel. No forcing, no cajoling, only through surrendering and trusting the Universe in its time. He's Ready, Able and Willing. Armed with his Rocks & Minerals book, he made his first haul of crystals today and cleansed them with intention. One step closer to feeling settled this week. Popped my CrossFit 🍒 and  joined @crossfitdisposition Exercise plays a huge role in my mental well-being but is one of the first things I give up on during times of stress and / or when I’m out of routine (and let’s be honest moving the family across the other side of the world without a regular income source is kinda stressful). I’m feeling incredibly grateful to have now found a gym that is so welcoming and encouraging. (And it’s literally at the end of my street! With SO many "diets" out there now, it can get quite confusing. 🤔 My approach? Listen to your body and eat what it craves! If it wants a piece of chocolate, HAVE IT. 🍫 If it wants a piece of chicken, have it and don't let anyone make you feel bad about your choices!

We shouldn't label ourselves with what "diet" we are on. So many times I hear people say that they're on "keto" or "intermittent fasting" but what they don't realize is that they have then labelled themselves and put a frame to their lifestyle and habits. And if they cross the boundaries of whatever "diet" they are on, then they feel defeated and guilty. 😔 That's why I like to have a balance in all that I eat and drink, because I've said it once and I'll say it a hundred times again, EVERYTHING in moderation! ☺️💯 Happy Friday everyone!

Monday morning sweet potato toast! On the left, we have a thin slice of toasted sweet potato topped with almond butter, @traderjoes paleo granola, @julianbakery and some fresh berries with honey drizzled on top. On the right is another sweet potato slice with a small amount of spinach and an over-easy egg placed on top. Lastly, we added a handful of pumpkin seeds and tahini sauce on top to finish it off! This manga, which I just finished reading, while containing some very inappropriate content that makes it unsuitable for middle school youth, creates an outstanding bond between a teacher and his students and offers numerous pearls of wisdom that teens can greatly benefit from. The story depicts a teacher most educators should emulate, extracting, of course, the inappropriate behaviors these manga writers always include because they apparently think such bad behaviors are funny. But Koro Sensei proves his love for his students by allowing them to be individuals and teaching them as such, doing whatever it takes to reach even the most difficult of his students, and adapting himself to their needs, rather than expecting the kids to adapt to a one-size-fits-all mode of teaching and learning. The devastating finale brought tears to my eyes, which seldom happens when I read manga. Maybe because I’m a teacher this story resonated so strongly, but I do recommend it for high school students and their teachers. One thing I learned on this journey is there is no one size fits all formula. Unfortunately, the world often makes it seem that way. To top it off, many people want you to do things their way and feel anything different is wrong. But those same people are often more impressed when you make it work and find success doing things on your own terms. 🤔

Personally, I've usually regretted doing something because of someone else, especially when it felt wrong in my gut. One time at the gym last year, a random guy came over and told me I was bench pressing incorrectly (I wasn't). I tried to explain it's what I learned from my trainer and it worked for me, but he was relentless. So I gave in and tried his method to get him to leave. I ended up straining my left shoulder, which hasn't fully recovered to this day.

Maybe he meant well, but I'm the one who has to live with the consequences. That's on me. But if I was doing it incorrectly in the first place, that was my lesson to learn. Not his.

I believe self awareness and kindness are the answers to many of humanity's problems. What if instead of pushing what we know, we supported each other's individual journeys and paths? What if we respected, even celebrated each other's differences? What if we empowered each other to find the right answers for ourselves?

Since I've started sharing my story, I never wanted to tell others what to do. I've only wanted to show people what's possible, which is just about anything. That's why I try to focus on the journey. I may share recipes or workouts, which everyone can try for themselves. But I know we are all unique and what works for me won't work for everyone else. #facts

Keto won't fit everyone's life. It was a major component in my journey, but not the only factor that gave me back my health. Intermittent fasting played a huge role, as did heavy lifting. And that combination isn't for everyone. We all have different circumstances and priorities.

What we do have in common is this: It's up to us to use our self awareness to find the right answers for ourselves. And it's our duty to show kindness and respect to those who do it differently. ❤️

🔹weights make you bulky and is only for guys
🔹cardio was necessary for weight loss
🔹sugar/carbs are pure evil
🔹it is normal and awesome awesome not to have a period
🔹quantity doesn't matter as long as I "eat clean"
🔹I can only choose one form of training
🔹journalling, meditation etc is ineffective and only for tree-huggers

Open-minded growth mindset/ NOW
🔸weights only make you bulky if you want them too and should be used by everyone to help with healthy aging and everyday tasks
🔸resistance training and diet are far superior tools for fat loss
🔸cardio has some great health benefits and can be used as a tool to assist with weight loss
🔸sugar/carbs are not inherently bad and can be included in a healthy diet as long as quantity is accounted for
🔸your hormonal cycle is a direct reflection of your overall health as a woman
🔸there is no "one size" fits all training or diet method and you can include in your training whatever you like!
🔸personal development is important and meditation and journalling can be great tools to do so!
🔸it is okay for training and nutrition evolve over time, as does research your life and your believes...

Yummy dinner with all of the things the hubby doesnt like since he’s out working medical at the rodeo. I made a bunch to take for lunches this week, and it’s so good I don’t mind having it more than twice haha! The only thing I didn’t have but wanted was feta cheese ☹️ add it in if you have it! The home made tzatziki sauce was 15 oz of plain Greek yogurt, 1 Tbs Red Wine Vinegar, 1 Tbs garlic powder, 2 Tbs True Lemon, and a LOT of dried dill 😊. Last night I attended a panel ‘But What About Health?’ hosted by @antidietriotclub where topics such as fat phobia, diet culture and privilege were discussed. 💡

I enjoyed this event mostly because it changes the perspective of nutrition and encourages an open mind. This will have a knock on effect in the future and allow me (and my peers!) to be a well-rounded clinicians and be able to call out stigma and diet culture (as I do already!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There are so many anatomical considerations when considering a squat or deadlift. When someone has poor form the flood gates open. Your tight! You need mobility work! Slant board stretch! Foam roll! What about femur length, hip socket orientation, or hip socket depth? Injuries or medical history. How can you compare someone who’s had multiple knee surgeries, back surgery, etc with a fresh body? On top of that everyday brings a new set of tweeks and aches we must consider. My goal is to get each person in the best position possible to produce the very best quality rep. My extensive injury history has been a great education in modifying movement patterns. I use each warm-up to assess my movement pattern and identify any issues. I was taught to use control as currency to progress in weight. Control is also the best indicator of quality. Every person is different and should be approached with great care. If there’s something that’s really emerging out of the research now, it’s that personalised medicine is the safest and most effective form. We are all unique with our individual genes, genetic SNPs, microbiomes and lifestyles, so there is often ‘no one size fits all’. Unlike natural folates found in foods like green leafy vegetables, lentils and organ meats, folic acid supplementation requires another step for us to utilise it in the body, using something called methylation, in the liver. A large percentage of the population do not perform this extra step, leaving unmetabolised folic acid in systemic circulation. If you are going to be in the receiving end then you are not looking for a relationship. To relate with means give and take. That said, UNDERSTANDING IS KEY, in a relationship. A lot of people may not know, but I will say this, there are people who can truly be busy and not go near a phone for 4 hours straight. There are people who because of one thing or the other, CAN NOT MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS. Doesn't make them live you any less. While this is not an excuse to excuse the undermining of a partner in a relationship, it's a call to understand the issues. MANY WOMEN ARE COMPARING MEN WHO ARE ON DIFFERENT LEVELS, DIFFERENT CAREERS, DIFFERENT WORKING HOURS AND DIFFERENT ORIENTATIONS. You can be married to a civil servant who goes to work at 8am and comes home at 5pm... or 7pm if there is traffic. You also can be married to a Sailor who can be away for 4 months or more. There are people who are married to astronauts. Even though we want to agree that that is an exception, it must be known that the availability of a guy is, in these days, IN SPITE, of technological advancement, to be at your beck and call is getting harder. There’s usually good reason why people choose their unhealthy actions; it’s filling a void in some way.  To expect one to just stop the unhealthy action(s) without addressing the void, is to set someone up for failure.  As coaches/trainers, we must assess the WHOLE person.

How many nutritionists and dieticians give advice without fully addressing the emotional component behind food/drink selection?

How many trainers and coaches give exercise related guidance without fully knowing their client’s sleep habits, stress levels, organ & glandular health, hydration and true food consumption?

How many chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, etc...are manipulating the body without having conversations with their patients about ergonomics at their desk, the importance of movement/exercise, and the role of stress management in healing?

This fucking legend has been training with me for a long while.
.
Since he started, he’s lost 18kgs.
He now single leg presses 200kg +
He’s battled through depression.
He’s smashed uni like it’s his bitch.
He’s done a 180 on his life.
.
But we were getting a little stuck on his weight when we got between 112-115.
.
Chris is lighter now than he was at 18yrs old! Shits still awesome. But we got stuck again and again.
.
He was eating brown rice, protein powder, chicken, veg, banana and tuna, a coffee everyday (cause everyone needs coffee right?!) - he ate all the “classic” fitness foods. Still he was unhappy in his mind, and his body wasn’t performing.

So it was time for @ph360me

WHILST MAINTAINING LEAN MASS!!
All measures of girth’s that change - went DOWN.

He went from lethargy to a fresh hair cut and shave and brighter skin.

Every SINGLE food he was eating - the veggies, was on his AVOID list 🤯

Whaaaaaaaat. Tuna? Brown rice? Bananas? But how?!

The point is - “healthy” isn’t “healthy” for everyone. Fruit and veg and low carb isn’t “healthy”. Each food, each nutrient - has its own properties and effects, and work for some people. And not for others. .
So...

You can keep following generic food plans as much as you like.

But you will probably be tired, disrupt your hormones. Be sad. Might even not make progress - others still will - but will flat out feel like shit 😭🤢

Ok. I guess you are aware now that I deal in facts, data and sport science. There is a worrying trend globally on "it's this way or no way" mentality in coaching fast bowlers. This is damaging the profession. There are two current issues being discussed and I get a lot of questions about and offer a more realistic answer. 
These are the recommendations.

A. Spending longer on BFC is better

B. Never do assisted bowling. Always resisted

Can I just say. IT DEPENDS on your bowler!!! A. If they are a slinger and massively KNEE DOMINANT then yep spend longer on BFC but make sure the upper body is also longer-sling and long arm pull!! Longer contact is very much a German way of coaching javelin throwers,who are far stronger than any bowler will ever be. So they have the ability in the Longer SSC which is more to do with strength/force than tendon reactivity. Asking a weak fast bowler to spend longer on BFC is a recipe to disaster.  Bowling is primarily about strength + derivatives coordination and timing 
@johannes_vetter @thomasroehler Both throw differently based on their biomotor qualities and throw it miles!!! The more the movement the more strength is needed or at least a greater capability in the longer SSC. 
It's matching it up with the ability of your athletes. Make the technique match with the athletes strengths.

B. Resisted bowling doesn't work for everyone. Some need assisted. I wrote a post yesterday to explain who, when and why on my Instagram page

But one thing that can never happen is RESISTED WITH BANDS. Why? Notice the stills from @xsens3d below. I want you to compare gather position and shin lead, BFC and FFC position and shape and also in relation to COM. Top is resisted and bottom assisted. A band has maximum tension when the bowler needs maximum momentum! 
Bowlers are individuals. Blanket one size fits all programme are wrong. Anthropometry dictates biomechanics.

Career and Motherhood - figuring things out. Had a great time last night with mommas in the Montclair area. I love to see the healing and insights women have listening to each other. 
One of the things they thought was useful was this discussion about different paths and cycles that @renata_p_andrade and I systematized. 
Momma X continued working full time, Momma Y does her thing part time and Momma Z pressed pause in her career to be home with her kiddos. 
Participants felt it was insightful to be able to visualize and discuss pros, cons, trade-offs. Do things change over time? How needs - our children’s, our own - and possibilities change?

One size does NOT fit all*

This saying “one size fits all” is commonly seen pinned up in a clothing store but is relatable to the “diet culture” seen in society today. We search for that one diet that will make us the healthiest, happiest, skinniest, strongest etc..... The secret is ..... There is no one diet that works well for everyone. 
Our bodies are all different inside and out.  A certain diet/lifestyle might work for one individual but might not work for another. Learning what works best to function at our highest quality is a trial and error process. Making small daily adjustments in habits can have a huge impact on improvement. This goes for a wide variety of things, what we eat, study habits, our actions and thoughts. Learn what works best for you. The best thing we can do is listen to our bodies in the present moment and learn from our mistakes🌼
