Trying to remember every important lesson from books by only reading them once is not only hard, it's neurologically impossible.
----
To combat this truth of neuroscience, the fact that you have to repeat the lessons ever so often to remember them, you must have tools to work with so that you can highlight and save the most significant ideas so that you can turn words into knowledge and use them to advance in life.
----
The best way I've found is to get yourself a highlighter and colored sticky index markers. You can go as deep as you'd like with these tools; categorize your findings in color, use different placements in the books, or highlight as you go.
----
Don't spend too much time thinking about what you highlighted; go with your gut, highlight what caught your attention, and keep reading. You will make perfect sense of this later. At this point, you want to focus on collecting data, not to completely absorb the profundity of the data.
----
You can also make notes to self in the books you read by writing something short and sweet next to the paragraph you highlighted. Otherwise, you are running the risk of forgetting why you highlighted a particular passage in the book, and that is truly a detriment to your advancements in life.
----
Highlight the passage, write down some quick notes, put a sticky index marker on the page, and move on. Following this simple strategy will help you turn reading into something active; something that will turn words into actionable knowledge that you can use to improve your circumstances.
----
Q: What is your best tactic for remembering and using everything you read?

Charged, Challenged, and Challenged!!! by Kenny Marshburn.

#QOTD: What was your greatest challenge you ever overcame?

This is a testimonial book about the author who suffered and is the survivor of nasal pharynx cancer- written from Christian perspective. I recommend this book to all who suffer cancer, in depression (like me), and to those who need assurance that the Lord still does miracles.

~To do class presentation was my greatest challenge for an introvert like me back then (now I'm an ambivert). I sighed and just read my notes whenever it was my turn to do my presentation in high school. I abhorred at the word 'presentation' itself. Things changed by the time I was in pre-university level. Thank God for a good teacher like Sir Peter. Now, I will be excited when given the opportunity to do presentation. There's no doubt I will be nervous about it but the euphoria to do presentation is greater.

What do you do on a rainy sunday? Burn a scented candle.. cozy up..and read some happy words! #gmorninggnight #linmanuelmiranda #happythoughts #lazysunday #nonfiction #thereandtheir #currentlyreading
Three reasons I read #nonfiction books.

1. In contrast to people who read fiction to nourish their imagination, relax, or emphatize with the stories, as a #Vata I read mostly non-fiction to be grounded. I need to balance my intuition and my wandering mind by reading something realistic, hence those science books between spiritual books. The more challenging the better.

It fortifies my sense of existence in the world (if that makes any sense to you ), teaches me to be critical, and broaden my worldviews. I hope someone can relate! I don't know why but I prefer to enjoy fictional works in forms of TV series or movies, even better theatres. I'm not saying that we can't learn from fictions though, it's just a preference.

2. I have infinite curiosities. My interests keep changing and expanding. I hated this at first because I can't seem to specialize or find one passion, but @regismachdy introduced me to the idea of #polymath via TED, info on next pic.

From that onwards I gain confidence to keep going. I explore more subjects without feeling guilty or afraid that it may not be useful for my works or further studies. Just satisfy your curiosities! As Jane Goodall said, that's what makes a good researcher
.
3. I consider reading or doing online courses--anything related to knowledge--as leisure activities. I just love learning so much! Doing postgraduate study feels like a holiday for me. Reading books feels like I have an intimate and precious conversation with the authors.

Moreover, I'm not really comfortable doing social activities / hang outs so mostly I stay at home: curled up with my books and cats. And that's how I save money to buy books. Now maybe you can guess my MBTI type?
.
These are my 3 reasons! How about you? What and why do you read?

Let's discuss it in the comment and feel free to ask me anything!

Book: Al Aqeedah Al Wastiya
Author: Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah Review by: Faisal Kareem ( @faisal.kar33m )
The book Al aqeedah Al Wastiya is written by most popular and influential Scholar of Islam Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah. Ibn Taymiyyah has written numerous books. Regarding Ibn Taymiyyah it is been said that he has written so much that if an average is made of his lifetime writings it would amount to 500 pages a day, now you can imagine the stature of Ibn Taymiyyah. He is know for his work on Tafseer (Quran translation) Aqeedah (Islamic creed) Hadith (Prophets Saying) Philosophy and others. Widely acclaimed but many a times misunderstood. But for me his books are always great to read and learn from.
Al Aqeedah Al Wastyah is actually an answer when the people of Wastiyah (a place in Iraq) asked him questions about the correct Aqeedah (creed) of Islam because at that time many innovations in Islam and false practices were on rise in Wastiya. His answer to their questions was preserved in the form of a book which later became famous as Al Aqeedah Al Wastiyah.
In this book Ibn Taymiyyah has cleared the misconceptions regarding Monotheism, attributes of Allah, the Hereafter, Companions of the Prophet (PBUH), Prophets (PBUH) Family, and brotherhood in Islam in the light of Quran and Hadith (Prophets (PBUH) sayings). For those who want to learn what Muslims believe or want to know the correct Aqeedah (creed) should read this. Those who have some basic knowledge of Islam or are familiar with Arabic will find it easy, but for those who dont will find it a bit difficult at times.
I give it 潃儭 潃儭 潃儭 潃儭/5

I do not read non-fiction. And the few that I have tried haven't succeeded in gravitating me toward this genre. I had heard a lot about Tara Westover 's memoir, Educated. It was appearing in every significant book recommendation and book lists, Bill Gates's, Obama's, NY Times and many other credible ones. However, the skeptic in me stayed away from this one.
But I guess the universe wanted me to read this. The book came to me. And, I haven't been more glad to be proved wrong. 'Educated' is an eye-opener, a shocker, and an intriguing, unputdownable, account of a girl's life who dared with all her grit to challenge her family, her upbringing, and the thought process that had formed the foundation of her existence.
I went through a myriad of emotions while reading this book. It shocked me, scared me, irritated me, angered me. But most of all, it made me think. Really THINK. And also, it made me feel good about the fact that I READ; that I have been blessed with this thirst to read and to know. I am humbled by this newfound appreciation for books and for my life.

British author, Jane Austen, was born 243 years ago. But shes still trending! Why do her works endure today?

For one thing, because she writes about real people with real problems from real dysfunctional families, like yours and mine. She grapples with issues that are as relevant now as they were then, like why or even if women should marry, and to whom. Though from another place and time, we see ourselves in her characters; they're relatable.

But what makes Jane Austen truly stand out is the brilliance of her writing. Shes a master of dialogue. Shes more interested in painting a psychological portrait of her characters than describing their superficial attributes. She peppers her books with subtle surprises such that each new reading is fresh. She is critical of life in the late 1700s, but observes it with humor too. Her tales are filled with irony. They teach us about her era with deft realism just as they teach us about us today.

They #TurnHistoryOn!

Little wonder shes featured on the UK 10 pound note. Big thanks to @KatieHagerty for nominating her!

This is what I am reading right now, its fascinating to learn how the English language came to be! If you havent read any Bill Bryson books, you must. His writing is brilliant, and often comical too

Im hoping to read some of his travel books soon so I can recommend them to those who like exploring other countries like me!

Whos read some Bill Bryson books?

This is one of those books you can't put down! It's hilarious and honest and sad and sweet. Loved it a lot. It's a book about growing up and explores love in it's various forms; love between friends and family and lovers. It's packed with hilarious anecdotes but is also moving and resonant.

Before the end of the year, I'll be doing a review of my favourite non fiction reads of 2018 and I have a feeling this one is definitely making the list!

Love that murky swamp cover on #craborchardreview. This volume is #21, a double issue. Its weighty. I flip to non-fiction. I myself write nonfiction but have yet to see myself in a journal. One thing I hate is is a self-solemnity in memoirish writing at which the reader can only confusedly raise their eyebrows. I liked the book, for a bad example but the one thats coming to mind right now, #abeautifulterriblething its a memoir of a marriage broken by lies. But I liked it because I recognized that feeling of betrayal, and also because the womans family is so damn comforting, and her descriptions of them and their home, combined with her gorgeous author photo in front of what seems to be a green barn door (garage maybe) just made me feel like no matter what happens I (the reader, deeply becoming the book protagonist) will still always be gorgeous and live in an L.L. Bean Christmas-time catalog. But as to the actual point of the book, I just kept on looking for the Big Horrible Thing that I thought would happen. Oh, your husbands lying? Mmmm. It just didnt ... 仄領儭 shock. I guess the point is everyone takes their own stuff more seriously than anyone else would. Yet in reading memoir one hopes the author and all collaborators could see that when it happens: over self-seriousness with a lack of perspective. (Judge not lest ye be judged; of course I am near paralyzed at thought of this exact thing in the mind of anyone who reads my work.) In any case, a jaded or cynical person could come to suspect any memoir of this. But what do you know? People know what theyre doing, these publishers and authors. I love memoir because at its best it connects us to others, it takes that deep thing inside which is the same, our yearning and heartbreak and recklessness and need, and lets us see how another dealt with it: with life, with being. How do we live? Memoir can be a map, like National Geographic but for inner travels. Julie Marie Wades Meditation # 35 was a stunner of the genre. A short piece tracing her life and how she came to claim who she is, despite others previous claims. #juliemariewade #craborchardreview #memoir #nonfiction #cnf #foundbooks
Love that murky swamp cover on #craborchardreview . This volume is #21 , a double issue. Its weighty. I flip to non-fiction. I myself write nonfiction but have yet to see myself in a journal. Day 1: A book that made you bawl
.
There is nothing as powerful as a mothers love, and nothing as healing as a childs soul.
.
Reading this book was painful. Cassies family and health situations may seem as extreme and severe examples however I felt that some parts were painfully relatable. The need to be loved to feel good, the pain of depression and loneliness and the fear of rejection. The mother/daughter relationship was the kernel of this plot. Said woman had no compassion and thoughts for others. Cassie, her own flesh and blood is not spared from her mistreatments. It seems that her true happiness was to make Cassies life a living hell. Kletters writing was heart-rending. Her exploration on the psychological damage inflicted by her mother was painfully thorough that you can see why Cassie was in danger of being dragged back under the sea over and over again. I felt deeply for Cassie. I absolutely loved this and the book will stay with me for a long time.

The book title is Mans searching for meaning, by the author Viktor E. Frankl. This book is an interesting historical book drawn from memoir of the author based on his own experience and the stories of his patients. It influences us to consciously live a meaningful life and place a great value on the journey not only the destination. Fortunately, While I am reading this book I got to plan a holiday trip with my friends to Budapest and during the trip we visited temporary exhibition In the house of the terror museum, I learned more about the concentration camp mentioned in the book. After I read this book I knew about the atrocities that occurred but to see the gas chamber and the way they were treated, it has a deep affect on me, I could connect what I saw with what I READ in this book . This book is divided into two sections, first about the author horrifying experiences as a prisoner, and second part is about his theory of logotherapy which can be used to determine one meaning for living or suffering.
Quotes from the book: -When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
-Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedomsto choose ones attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose ones own way.

One delightful evening while strolling around the city. I came across March矇 Moven Pick, A Swiss Caf矇 in Singapore.
It wasnt like an ordinary cafe. Level 0 had a few tables but most of the crowd was at -1, While moving downstairs. I could feel the positive vibes. They had stalls with colorful fruits and barrels which were full of wine.

I took a seat near a French couple. Sipping Orangina, I looked around the caf矇. People were chattering, swapping stories and debating politics. It was a lot like being at a dinner party, except that my companions weren't old friends. They were the waitress, bartender, and another patron two stools over.

The ambiance was good but I could feel a little hollowness; It was already 10 p.m. Most of the staff members were looking dog-tired but still had a big smile on their faces.
I ordered one swiss r繹sti. It is not a stem, it is a stem tuber. They served it with a concentrated fermented cloud of cr廕窮m. A perfect combination like Kev's Red Beans and Rice.
All my tastebuds were eager to melt down this crunchy piece of swollen starch. I knew my tongue had already secreted watery liquid to swirl down this hot, starchy, tuberous crop. I used a spoon to make a crack in the chunky disc. While bringing close to the mouth i could smell the #french #food #fineness , And the moment of #nirvana came into my life when it #harmonized with my mouth.

There is a saying that 'Kindness is the best form of humanity'. But unfortunately and unabashedly, we have gone about proving to our environment, that we care two hoots. 'The Great Smog of India' is a write-up on how we have collectively dismissed any empathy towards Mother Nature, towards our very own existence.
.
There has been rampant pollution that has increased by the year and the sources of it have been plenty. From stubble burning, to urban construction, to cars emitting plumes of smoke (and so on). Unless we collaborate and set our priorities right, more sooner than later we are all going to face nature, unleash its fury on us. About time!

Stop the blame-game but band together.

Book Review | Nine Pints: A Journey Through the Money, Medicine, and Mysteries of Blood by Rose George |
.
The average adult human has about 9 pints of blood, and in this book Rose George explores the history, science, and industry of blood in nine chapters.
.
I have no medical or scientific background, and I found this book to be very readable but also dense with new information. It is well researched and cited. In my galley the endnotes were properly numbered in the text, which always makes me happy.
.
I learned a lot: about bloodletting and the use of leeches (historic and modern), the development of Englands system of blood banks during WWII, blood-borne disease (she focuses on HIV/AIDS and Hep C), menstrual practices and beliefs in India (mostly), the Indian man who invented a manual easy-to-use pad-making machine to make poor womens lives easier, trauma care practices, and about the possibilities of synthetic blood. So. Much. Interesting. Information. I didnt find this a fast read, but that has more to do with my lack of background knowledge. . 潃儭潃儭潃儭潃儭 for Nine Pints
.
Thanks to NetGalley and Metropolitan/Henry Holt for providing me with a digital galley in exchange for an honest review.

Everythings Trash But Its Okay...because Im in my comfy clothes with a glass of vino
(SIGH).. yeah I just finished this book with a real big sigh not for just the utter brilliance of YNH but for leaving me seemingly clear sighted but yet in a greater labyrinth of complexities of life. Nevertheless, it was such a wonderful experience seeing the modern world with the sceptical eyes of YNH and I am seeing myself looking for more of similar genres in the coming year (the first thing coming into mind is books by Richard Dawkins).
The earlier part of the book gives a brief description of the technological challenges of the modern world which he more widely discussed in the book Homo Deus.

Liberalism always cherished political equality, and it gradually came to realize that economic equality is just as important. For without a social safety net and a modicum of economic equality, liberty is meaningless. But just as Big Data algorithm might extinguish liberty, they might simultaneously create the most unequal society that ever existed. All wealth and power might be concentrated in the hands of tiny elite, while most people will suffer not from exploitation, but from sth far worse - irrelevance.

The middle part of the book has a layout of current political and cultural challenges covering the topics Religion, Immigration, Racism and Culturism War, Secularism and so on.
..underneath all these debates lurks a far more fundamental question which concerns our understanding of human culture. Do we enter the immigration debate with the assumption that all cultures are inherently equal, or do we think that some cultures might be superior to others? When Germans argue over the absorption of a million Syrian refugees, can they ever be justified in thinking that German culture is in some way better than Syrian culture?

Many religions praise the value of humility - but then imagine themselves to the the most important thing in the universe. The mix calls for personal meekness with blatant collective arrogance. Humans of all creed would do well to take humility more seriously.

And the book ends with a personal note about finding the meaning of universe and meaning of our own identity, for which the best place to ... (in comment)

To be present might be exactly what weve needed all along. To feel a place while were in it. To be fully with people while were sharing time. To know this moment and this moment only may actually be the closest thing to ecstatic living well experience. So wherever you are be there in your body. One foot in front of the next.

BOOKMAS CHALLENGE 2018 - DAY 16: LIBRARY BOOK.
This is a picture of a library book from my local library. I read this book last year during summer.
Freedom of speech is the basic warranty for living-together. Since the Enlightenment this right has lived at peace with another constitutional right, freedom of religion. But we seem to have lost that footing in our country. A society doesn't exist if population groups live next to each other. It's very clear even today that many people think that they are absolutely right. Johan Op de Beeck paints a picture of the start and history of free speech and asks a few confronting, but unavoidable topical questions.
Q: What is your opinion on free speech?

BOOKMAS UITDAGING 2018 - DAG 16: BIBLIOTHEEKBOEK.

Whether during the work week, or at weekends, it's important to have an appealing place to work from when out of the office and, for us, fresh flowers are a must (nothing says luxury more than fresh flowers). Reading is also compulsory - we prefer non-fiction, and are currently enjoying "Mastery" by Robert Greene. Enjoy your weekend!
