If you are in Punta Arenas everybody says you need to visit their cemetery🕳 not only because they have many rather posh tombs but because of the iconic central view of topiary cypress trees that creates the atmosphere at the place. There is not that many alive people around just before closing time (it was also “off season”🕺🏽time as we came). The masquerade of rich dead is not impressive for me🧟‍♂️ but the combination of polished stones and shorn trees is remarkable there.
We met a fantastic photographer from Colombia who is travelling around the Americas with his vintage #Polaroid and taking old school photos in places which look rather old fashioned. Now we have a photo with James which reminds you of a couple from century ago. Though I’m wearing tight jeans.
He told us that tourists who don’t speak Spanish are rather scared of him and he doesn’t think he will go soon somewhere far where he can’t be understood. Which brought us again to understanding how language barriers are there to stop you from #travellingdeeper and it is difficult to change it. If you travel it doesn’t mean you are open minded. Sometimes you are just rich and lucky to be able to pick and choose.

There are more options for tours to see penguins around Punta Arenas than around Ushuaia, so we were sold. At the same time you need to be careful about their migrating times. We were a bit sad we couldn’t see rockhopper colony at Puerto Deseado due to the seasonal migration but we were happy to see a fairly new settlement of King Penguins in Bahia Inutil. It is the only King Penguin colony outside of the Sub-Antarctic islands and is therefore very unique and special☺️. But to me it was special to meet the only vet there and talk about the problems that the colony faces: such as attacks by foxes (which were brought to the islands by people🤷🏻‍♀️), not having enough equipment to treat problems locally and sometimes they need to bring birds for further check ups to towns. A side note: the colony is literally in the middle of very much Useless bay (to humans obviously😁). Also a fun fact. The penguins came to this area probably by genetic memory because their ancestors had colonies many thousands years ago😮.

Once we had covered the roof of the dome we knew that we need to move on🗺. On the last day of work the dearest dog of ours who was with us all the time, Glazuña, gave birth to 5 🐶 puppies and we had an aching feeling that we are leaving them in these ever colder Fuegian nights. But we knew that good friends of ours will take care of the pups.
We knew that from now on we will be moving to warmer areas and it seemed like we were running away from winter. First leaving Finland in winter and then running away from it up north from the South Pole🤸🏻‍♀️.

🌪Winds in Tierra del Fuego can reach well over 100kph, and the worst is if you experience them while hitchhiking which is what happened to us😂. From the other hand locals are managing swaying cars pretty well and can go over 100kph. So I would never recommend to visitors of Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia in general who have never experienced strong winds to go driving over 80kph here and especially on motorbikes. So please keep in mind that the weather is pretty inhumane and we heard about lots of tourists accidents on the roads. To prove to you the winds look at this swirled tree🤪. And plenty of berries underneath. I love the berries of América del Sur. Miss them so much: such as chaura berries, murtilla, calafate.. but there are so many @mar.cgs, right? I thought that I tried all that I saw. Especially their fresh taste while hiking!

Have you been to the place which was calling you for ages📣? Nothing seemed to work and no hope left but somehow you pulled it out. This warm feeling of being content with yourself when you saw the land your heart was longing for... just covering you completely.
На самом деле куда бы мы не шли, путь только один - к себе🏹
Argentina, mi cariño💜, antes de nada me trajiste a mi mismo. 🍀
Не останавливайтесь.
Будьте верны себе.
Ищите себя.
И новые затеи.
Все получится!

So I’m about to tell you a story about a beautiful house our friend is building at the tip of the American continent. It is a special house☝🏽Difficult to find anything like it build by nonprofessionals. First time we learned about #Earthships was through @workawayinfo where you can find different projects to do in the middle of nowhere📡: work on a farm on the rainy island of Chiloé🌊 or dry lands of Atacama next to quiet volcanoes🗻. When we saw the photos of that #Earthship Mariana was working on we realised we wanted to contribute our time and resources into this project during our visit to Tierra del Fuego🔥. It was one of the best decisions that made the trip unforgettable. There we met people who actually want to live a sustainable life👏🏽 and not just looking on others who aren’t. In places where I have lived many people don’t want to think about recycling or they think it is someone else's problem and you can’t change the system but if you want a change we should all start from things you personally can do. And Mariana, a physiologist with two young kids, did👩‍👦‍👦. She also opened the door to people who are ready to help. And we came🕺🏽. And many others.
The house of her dream is far from being finished but it has many good ideas: The dome shape helps circulation of air, rainwater will be collected and used for drinking, the glassed front part which will allow walls built from clay and tires to store and recirculate heat, and solar panels for the electricity. For 3 weeks James and I with the help of another volunteer covered the dome roof so it can been stored nicely in the winter and prepared to open for a new season of works inside in the spring🙌🏽

🤔What kind of crazy/wonderful/difficulttoget/nonconventional presents you have found for dear to you people on your travels? I think my best one was these notes🎼 of tango that I found in #buenosaires and sent to my pianist friend from my hometown in Russia.

When we thought about coming to Argentina first of all, of course we wanted to try out hiking and hitchhiking. So we were ready for both things and of course we had lots of little presents for people on the road💁🏻‍♀️. But Argentina also had surprises for us. First of all people were extremely generous and helpful. To be honest I hitchhiked only with James in Altai mountains and once by myself in South Africa(no tenía mucha experiencia). You should be comfortable doing it, get ready for long and windy roads and driver’s speed that you can’t control. And loooong talks🙋🏻‍♀️
James had listened so many times to me telling pretty much the same or at least starting the same stories that he finally started to contribute a lot to conversations. So language barrier is pretty much gone as you sit with a stranger in a car and know that there is no escape from entertaining someone for a couple of hours😆. the longest we were driven in one car was 424 km from Rio Grande🇦🇷 to Punta Arenas🇨🇱. I was pretty happy how many nice people picked us up along the roads in Argentina. To all of them I have sent some postcards afterwards. This is how grateful I was❤️
Some countries are so big (like Russia or Argentina)that hitchhikers become important people on the road to keep the drivers company so consider trying it🙃

Ushuaia🇦🇷
I can’t say there is anything exciting about the town itself but definitely the surroundings of it make Ushuaia one amazing destination where your journey starts (like it happened to us in Argentina) or where your journey is finishing. We met many people coming from the northern places: on bikes, bicycles, hitchhiking 👍🏾and some who were coming like us to the north from the very south of Tierra del Fuego. This creates a very special atmosphere of the town where people come exhausted but burning, or full of energy but unaware how it will unfold in the nearest future. So here in pubs you will easily meet all type of travellers, local mountain guides and pretty average craft beer🍻
Here on the photo with @jenncuchillo my first way up to a glacier🏔 which started in this peaceful valley holding the river formed by the melting Vinciguerra.

Go with the flow: needless to say I think, it is dangerous.
Visiting popular destinations and leaving with suitcases full of souvenirs is not what I like.
I like the unique feeling of the first discovery. Which has nothing to do with consumerism or colonization, all of that comes afterwards. But at the start you have only you and emptiness. I try to meditate to that feeling a lot. The feeling of a place being open to me and yet unknown.
The feeling that you have all time on your hands and nowhere to hurry.

How much do you really understand the surroundings if you have never read a book about it’s architecture, centuries of battling the land reform or melting ice at it’s peaks?
Of course people who you meet can become these connectors to the culture and surroundings as well. They can show you what yerba makes the best mate and tell how invasive species like beavers in Tierra del Fuego really destroy the environment.
We went to Argentina with many ideas of what we wanted from our trip but one of the biggest objectives was meeting locals, helping them, trying to see the place through the eyes of Argentinians. In many places we succeeded.
When we arrived to #Ushuaia and met our first host Victor we knew very little about the southernmost tip of civilization close to Antarctica. Victor(originally from Misiones) was amazing, open to new people and experiences, knew a lot about local tribal history and admitted that Chilean Puerto Williams is a bit southerner than Ushuaia =) We learned more about the local ways around from him, national parks, fishing, funny stories from the Airport, how to fold empanadas the right way, he showed us waterfalls and we enjoyed walking together a lot.
This kind of personal connection is the best way not to disturb local life, learn the most efficient services in town, get a touch of local food, music and show your respect.

We don’t travel to tick boxes. We travel to inspire and get inspired.
To meet people. Not to be afraid. To find new and amazing things to do.
To connect deeper with the place you need to dive into their culture, lifestyle, mate, lakes.
It takes a lot of time to make friends - it is always true. But to decide to share your life with someone takes no time. So here it starts. With a question are you ready to share?
Are you ready to accept something new?
If so, if you are not only looking for pleasing views and people you know you are on the right way - the way to travel. .

So on my flight back from Santiago to Helsinki we stopped for a layover in Barcelona for a couple of nights at the place of one awesome Venezuelian family. They lived for a while in Catalonia and were very worried how quickly the situation with tourists in the town escalated. Many people from Barcelona hate tourists.. Don’t we all? How uncomfortable for many people who like to wander around…
The world is sooooooooooo big. There are so many not well known tourist destinations… There are places which seek and want tourist’s money (I’m not talking about Crimea), for example the Balkans (I’m not talking about Dubrovnik). But why do you choose Barcelona? - It is comforting. It is all well run. But after my 3,5 months in deserted Patagonia, my first time in Barcelona seemed very disappointing. Tons of tourists to spoil the experience.
So I want to show you places where life is plenty and for all budgets. Where all people can have a better experience because tourists are unknown mater. Where everyone who comes matters. Where you as a tourist can set new respectful to local life standards of travelling. We all are different like Gaudi’s masterpieces and I believe we can help each other to grow.

This has been a great holy-day vacation. I'm thankful for this hot sun Barbados serves on the daily. I'm thankful to learn about the connection between this island and the Carolinas. I'm thankful for the dancing, the long walks, the ocean prayers. I'm thankful for the music, the men (yes lawd), the food, the nature. This time reminds me of how precious life is. I invest in what and who invests in my highest good. Yes to living and fun relationships and friendships. No to anything and anyone who drains my spirit and life force. Life is too short. The better part of my year is lush with art, strategy, family, and friends. This moment away was good and I'm ready to get home and back in the flow. #livelifenow #nobucketlists #love 🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧

This week I was biking in the Big Sky backcountry and came across a woman who's husband had suffered a heart attack, and he subsequently died due to our remote location. In the hours I spent with the two of them waiting for search and rescue to extract the body, I was reminded of how fragile our existence is and that we shouldn't waste any of the time we get. So in the words of Valerie #nobucketlists
