It's always fun to see my Instagram #topnine each year! I'm a little confused about the pic on the lower left, because that's the work of (now retired) Chief White House Calligrapher Pat Blair! Thanks for the compliment, IG!
Oh so loving the intricate details and symbolism in the work of artist @michelamartello . We have some new smaller works by Michela as part of our current exhibition, “Gilt By Association”.
This piece “Radioactive Shield” is available! DM for details or
Michela Martello works are humanistic, accessible, and consistently characterized by her use of symbolism. A perpetually curious and interdisciplinary artist, she brings together the traditional and contemporary influences of a variety of techniques, media, themes, and cultures to create art that achieves a universal language of aesthetics that merges centuries and crosses cultural bounds. This word really used to drive me up a wall, and I used to not like to associate with it. Now, I don’t mean I wasn’t into equality and closing pay gaps and the ideals of the movement by any means - alignment with those principles is the core of how I was raised by my mama - but I hated what so many women (and men) did with the word. I hated when white women used it against other women who were different then they were. I hated it when men used it as a means to justify crudeness and support their patriarchal bullshit because “if the feminists can do...I can do...men’s equality!” Etc. I hated how people used it to LIE about their position of equality but really what they meant was “only for straight white women” after awhile. It bothered me and until I could find a way to represent everyone with this word, I didn’t wanna use it - and then someone showed me the intersectional folx and I was thrilled!
In the last few years, with the push for intersectional viewpoints, LGBTQIA supporters, etc, I’m more than comfortable accepting this term and “label” now if you need to assign me one. I truly believe in equality for ALL genders and ALL abilities and ALL races and ALL religions, and so I support intersectional feminism so fucking hard I may just explode.
I understand that as a Caucasian woman I also can * use my privilege * for good, to make way for women of colour, transgender/non-binary, disabled, immigrants.....and raise all of their voices higher than ever!!! I will stand up for, stand by you, and shine the spotlight so people can understand we have made strides but aren’t as “fair and balanced” as it may seem.
In keeping with this passionate life and political stance, I shifted my subject of artwork to include themes of equality, feminism, & LGBTQIA subjects both subtly and blatantly.
I had seen similar earrings months ago in a shop, but never got em. (Snagged these on amazon for a holiday party outfit 2wks ago lol!) I have no problem wearing this banner now. I’ll gladly engage anyone in a patriarchal bullshit “challenge”. And I will fist bump any females/femmes that resonate with me.
The times they are a changing, & we have the power to do it!
