Out of bad comes good - the crash made me!! “This time 10 years ago I remember it clearly - as I thought my world had come to an end. I was made redundant from a well paid management position - working for a large construction company over a period of 15 years. For the first time in my life I was un-employed. It was a massive shock to me on a personal and career level. In hindsight little did I know what was around the next corner or should I say corners!! At the time it was a massive blow to my career path, financially and also personally.
Over the next two weeks I didn’t know what to do with myself as I had always worked. I questioned myself and my redundancy during those two weeks. Yet I had 5 children and it’s not that I didn’t want to be a stay at home mother I just needed to work - it was always my passion and drive to work and be the best mother I could be. Yet within 2 weeks I was offered 3 jobs by 2 of my former employers competitors and a completely different role in Fashion/Retail. I needed to work and went for a job interview one week after my redundancy to a large fashion retailer. Towards the end of the interview I was offered an immediate position- to my shock horror!! As I thought I at least had to wait several days to hear the outcome. I come out of that interview elated. It was a massive lift to my self-confidence as it had took a massive battering!! Several days then passed and then two competitors from my previous employer made contact out of the blue. The first job I turned down and the second competitor offered me a full-time post with a higher salary and a higher management position - so I took it!! The next 10 years was a world wind of career advancement, further education, a MBA, a divorce, family experiences, personal lows, personal highs, new love, new business ventures and the growth of McAteer Solutions - with drive, passion, determination, a strong vision, belief, morals, hard-work, you can succeed. I look forward to the next 10 years and often wonder what will be”.
