Draining pus out of a brain abscess!
Brain or cerebral abscess is caused by intracranial inflammation with subsequent abscess formation, which is a pus-filled swelling in the brain that commonly occur when bacteria (usually polymicrobial with streptococcus being the most common) or fungi reaches and infects part of the brain.
Abscesses can originate from infection of contiguous structures (eg, otitis media, dental infection, mastoiditis, sinusitis) secondary to hematogenous spread from a remote site (especially in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease), after skull trauma or surgery, and rarely, following meningitis.
As a result, swelling and irritation (inflammation) develops.
It is regarded as a medical emergency and immediate surgical drainage of the abscess provides the most optimal therapy. The procedures used are aspiration through a bur hole and complete excision after craniotomy. These procedures are also diagnostic and provide material that can guide antimicrobial therapy.
Needle aspiration is the preferred and the most commonly used procedure, seen in the video above.

A graft is often used to repair small defects in the dura. The collagen matrix is manufactured from processed bovine tendons in laboratories by people much smaller than me.
The bone window is secured with titanium screws and plates, and as it’s not ferrous does not set off airport security; this asked by most patients having a craniotomy. .

A woman ran a red light and hit my daughter, totalling my car. She then screamed and cussed out my child and her friends who were in the car with her. I found out today that she lied to her insurance company and told them 1) it was not her fault (witnesses testified to police otherwise), 2) my daughter was the only person in the car, and 3) my daughter wasn't injured and didn't go to the hospital (she was at the same ER). Fortunately her injuries were minor, and everyone is alive and well. My car however, was my baby. I shopped for a long time before buying it, and they don't make the Cube anymore. We are now down to one vehicle, with no AC and no money to fix it. My husband is disabled from 20 brain surgeries, and I'm a full time student. If the insurance company doesn't replace my car, I have no idea what to do. I'm doing my best to stay positive and hold it together. I've been trying for weeks to find a job, but keep hitting dead ends. Sometimes I just don't understand why bad things happen to good people 😢 #nissancube  #nissan  #car  #carwreck  #totalled  #hydrocephalus  #brainsurgery  #neurosurgery  #shunt  #tbi  #depression  #prayerneeded  #jobsearch  #karma  #needabreak  #tiredofeverything  #university  #universityoftxarlington  #college  #physicsmajor

Don’t be fooled, I actually have no idea what I’m doing...but the journey is delightful.
Who knew the brain could be so fascinating?

Reviewing imaging is an important pre-surgical step. Here, Dr. Newell observes the decreased right-sided cerebral blood flow in an angiogram before performing a right STA-MCA bypass.

Throwback to June 8th of 2017 when I was going into my first brain surgery for my brain condition known as “Chiari Malformation”. Later I had found out when I was more with it that I had a complication known as “Malignant Hyperthermia” which caused my body to become rigidity as well as my heart rate and temp to increase. I had been put on a ventilator for a few days due to the complications. After becoming more aware my neurosurgeon had told me that my Chiari was worse than they original had thought. Early July I wasn’t feeling well so I went back to the hospital, where they had done a lumbar drain and two days later inserted my first shunt. Later that month we were back in due to it being infected so I had to go back to get it replaced. In July I had now been diagnosed with three more brain conditions which are pseudotumor cerebri, hydrocephalus and pseudomeningocele. A month went by and I was doing alright but in September I went back to the hospital due to still feeling unwell. They decided to do my first external drain and two days later again they put my third shunt in. Of course once again I was going through problems in December but they were a bit different than the previous times. In December I had gone for a shunt study to see how my shunt was working, which it was but my cfs fluids were just sitting in my stomach. So about week or so later they clipped some of the tubing in my abdominal area to see if it would make difference but it didn’t. So early January when we called my neurosurgeon again and he ordered for me to get a second shunt study which the results came back that it remained exactly the same as the first study..🤕 [To Be Continued]

Um hematoma extradural (HED) é uma coleção de sangue que se forma entre a superfície interna do crânio e a dura-máter. Geralmente estão associados a uma história de traumatismo cranioencefálico com uma fratura craniana. Veja mais em nosso site.
