The Neolithic temples of Malta and Gozo are the oldest man-made freestanding stone structures in the world and are listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many of these megalithic temples pre-date the Great Pyramid of Giza by 1000 years. Scholars believe Malta’s temples and complexes were built as sanctuaries to worship an ancient Great Mother Goddess. Nowhere is this goddess presence more pronounced than in Malta. I urge you to come explore this beautiful place on earth.
Trepanation was a worldwide used surgical method that dates back to the neolithic. A specific part of a living persons skull was opened and left to heal.
It might have been a way to cure people who behaved in abnormal ways. Opening the skull would allow demons and evil spirits to leave the persons mind. Maybe it was used to cure intense headaches such as migraine too.
There was different methods used to open the skull such as drilling, cutting and scraping with flint objects.
The skull on the first picture shows that the person did not survive the procedure. The holes next to the hole is probably holes drilled to train on the surgical technique.
It shows that 80-85% of all skulls that has been found with this treatment the human survived. We probably should not underestimate the skills that ancient surgeons possesed.
