Castel Beranger

Hector Guimard (1867-1942)

Paris 1895 (Art Nouveau)

#hectorguimard, #castelberanger, #artnouveau, #victorhorta, #tasselhouse, #violletleduc, #parisarchitecture, #quarreloftheancientsandthemoderns, #japaneseart, #belgianart, #eduardpicard, #octavemaus, #neogrec, #modernarchitecture,

For all practical purposes, one can view the period 1829-1892 in European avant-garde art circles as one of constant experiments to find a new style free from the historicism of the 18th century as well as that still being practiced by contemporary academicians. Although one can trace the “Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns” back to French author Charles Perrault’s assertion in 1687 that “Learned antiquity… was never enlightened to equal our times,” I picked 1829 because it was in this year that French architect Henri Labrouste submitted his controversial (he had analyzed the three Greek, not Roman, temples in Paestum, Italy) Fourth Year Prix de Rome envoi (report on his research) that marked the beginning of the Néo-Grec challenge (Néo-Grec is a misleading name, for the only thing Greek about its architecture was its individual or “freed from the rules” approach to design that paralleled the ancient Greek approach to politics) to the Académie des Beaux-Arts insistence upon the use of Classical architecture in France. This was just the first of a number of efforts to develop a new style of architecture for the 19th century throughout Europe. Many historians recognize Art Nouveau as the first successful realization of this effort.
There were many influences that impacted the evolution of this style across the arts. Some of these were 1. painting movements such the English Pre-Raphaelites and the French Impressionists; 2. the “opening” of Japan in 1853-4 and the corresponding discovery of Japanese painting that did not focus on realistic representation; and 3. the theories of French architectural theorist Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. While artists across Europe were engaged in this search, Belgium became the home of Art Nouveau architecture. Belgium had only gained its independence from the Netherlands in 1831, after having been ruled by Spain...

The IRT Powerhouse, once the world's largest, was built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company from 1902-1905 to power its soon to be built subway system, the first in NYC. Designed by Stanford White, in accordance with City Beautiful principles, it occupies an entire block and could hold more than 30 million pounds of coal.

Con Edison purchased the building in 1959 as a steam plant and although they removed the six original (and enormous) smokestacks before the building was landmarked, much of the exterior remains intact. The building has a fascinating history and the landmark designation report is well worth the read.

Designed at the precipice of a transitioning zoning code, architect John Sloan championed to bring his preliminary plans for this structure to fruition. The result is the last tall building in NYC to be erected without setbacks, developed on a parcel that stands above Grand Central Terminal subway lines. The Romanesque, neorenaissance building features the clean lines of the U-shaped skyscraper popular at the time, as well as grandiose ornamentation of textured brick, colored terra cotta and Northern Italian motifs. .

This structure made history upon its completion in 1894, as it was the first commercial building to boast an entirely steel frame. Commissioned to serve as headquarters for the Broadway and Seventh Avenue Railroad Co., a local cable car operator, McKim, Mead & White's Beaux-Arts design spans an entire city block, featuring two chamfered corners and three vertical stages. The limestone base offers a two-story arcade of show windows, decorative iron spandrels and elaborate keystones, followed by four stories of brick piers with elaborate caps and terra-cotta entablature. Capped by a two-story topper, the attic story offers square fenestration, cartouches, and dentils and a prominent copper cornice with lions' faces, egg and dart moldings, and surmounting acanthus. .

Queen Anne, Renaissance Revival, neogrec and colonial motifs comingle in the distinguished design of this 11-story structure, commissioned in 1882 by prominent city politician Orlando Potter. One of the first NYC office buildings to have an almost entirely iron frame, the property featured the most advanced fireproofing technology of the time. Architect N.G Starkwell combined function with form, designing a facade of brownstone-colored terra cotta overlaid upon rich red brickwork.

This neorenaissance construction was designed in 1909 by architect Maynick and Franke for Henry Corn. Faced in limestone, brick and terra cotta, the structure features a traditional tripartite style—a heavily ornamented topper stacks upon a twelve story shaft and three story base. Symmetrical window bays climb up the facade, the center three terminating as a trio of classical arches framed by Corinthian columns. .

Named for the NY Mercantile Exchange - a temporary tenant - this six-story commercial space took root on Broadway in 1883. Architect H.J Schwarzmann, calling upon motifs from the emerging Aesthetic movement, integrated natural imagery and ornamentation - making for a facade that stands out among the scores of Soho’s other cast iron buildings. Columns shaped as bamboo poles weave up from the ground floor, and recessed panels at the sides are embellished with leaf designs. Slender palm trees and clumps of calla lilies bloomed our from the cornice on the floors above.

Designed by New York-based architectural firm @mkcarchitecture, the revival of a badly dilapidated 1879 Neo-Grec townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side has led to the conception of a spacious, multilevelled family home that balances heritage with innovation. Conceived for large-scale entertaining, the townhouse adapts every opportunity to introduce light and air through it's interiors while simultaneously emphasising the building's grand proportions. Throughout the house, works by emerging and independent American designers have been fused with significant works of modernist design from Italy, Scandinavia and the United States. Majority of the contemporary furniture was custom for the house primarily through designer commissions, including a number of one-off pieces by the architects who are solely responsible for the project’s architecture as well its interior design. As demand for commercial space mounted along Union Square in the early 1900s, architects Starrett & van Vleck were commissioned to develop a contemporary, corner construction with ample light and ventilation. The result is a 1908 loft and office building that evokes 20th century functionalism as well as the ornamentation of decades past. A classical cresting tops of the tower of patterned face brick, studded by acroteria and architectural terra cotta. Large windows stack up the facade, welcoming light into the tall-ceilinged interiors.

This massive stone structure replaced YMCA’s first permanent headquarters, which had stood on the site from 1869 to 1902 before being decimated by fire. Architects Clinton & Russell were brought on to redevelop the property, replacing the former French Renaissance construction with a 12-story Beaux Arts office building. The facade contrasts clean, conservative bands of limestone with ornate embellishment, including a top floor of arched windows and terra cotta sculpture. .

Commissioned in the 1860’s by the up-and-coming Lord & Taylor Company, this structure illustrates the hyperbolic embellishment of Victorian style. Architect James H. Giles’ rebuked the conventional stone-clad facade, boldly exposing the building’s cast iron framing. His decadent design offers a montage of pillars, balconies, dormers, and lacy cresting, topped by a regal Second Empire mansard roof. .

The 40-story New York Life building was designed by Cass Gilbert, who also served as architect for the Woolworth Building. Here, he blends the neo-Gothic embellishment of earlier skyscrapers with 1920s cubic geometries, forging a structure reminiscent of the transition to Moderne architecture. The limestone clad construction is topped by the iconic gold pyramid, which stuns the New York City skyline with 25,000 gold-leaf tiles.

This stately construction was erected in 1911 by the Terry & Tench Company, a business more widely known for it's iron railways, viaducts and bridges that connected New York State during the late 19th century--and for contributing the steel for Grand Central Terminal. This property conveys the contractor's fine craftsmanship and attention to detail, boasting a 3-story limestone clad base, deep red brick and ornamented crown. The 12-story loft building is illustrative of late Victorian style, incorporating Edwardian flourishes alongside Classical influence. .

In 1879, ground was broken for a new public school in East Harlem. Designed by David Stagg, the neo Grec Style building that was christened P.S 72 (in New York City public, no charter elementary schools are marked by the initials for “public school”-P.S) would be a shining star of the Manhattan public school system. Until 1975, P.S 72 continues to educate students until its closure by a then near bankrupt Board of Education. Why is this building featured? Well, it’s one of the very few remaining examples of 19th century public school architecture in New York. Stagg was known for his formal, classically influenced education structures which made schools seem akin to Neoclassical Renaissance palaces. This building is a gorgeous gem in Harlem, giving the neighborhood a reminder of its past that still shines through. Its five story, five bay pavilion is a stark contrast to the surroundings, while stair towers and projecting windows makes the building retain its neoclassical look. Both architecturally and historically striking but a victim of the 1975 fiscal crisis, this building was used as a job corps and community office until 1987. In that year the city’s plans to build a homeless shelter fell through, and for seven years it laid abandoned as a city owned empty shell.
__________
Then in 1995, under support from the city and the community, P.S 72 underwent a massive restoration that revitalized its neo Grec decor and facade. Spearheaded by artists from the community and with deep ties to the Barrio and its people, in that year it found its new life as the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center. Named for the famed Puerto Rican poet and nationalist (and one of five great Boricuas I would always hear about at home growing up) who died in Harlem close to where the Center is today. The artists who created the cultural center couldn’t have chosen a more suitable location. Right at the heart of the Old Barrio, away from bright lights and tourism, important architectural landmarks have immense cultural and community importance.

The Samuel Whittemore House at 45 Grove Street was built in 1830 and originally surrounded by spacious grounds and gardens was likely one of the largest Federal-style mansions in the Village.
A major renovation in 1870 added two floors of apartments, converted the basement and first floors into retail, and altered the parlor floor windows and probably the entrance doors. Sympathetically, the architect, B.G. Wells, retained the outmoded Federal style for much of the additions.
The story goes that an actor, Samuel Chester, was living here in 1865 when a fellow actor came to call. John Wilkes Booth paid Chester a visit to recruit him for Booth's plan to kidnap Lincoln. While Chester declined to participate, he also kept the plan a secret, and a few months later Booth became infamous.

Commissioned in 1890 by rising pharmacist Ewen McIntyre, this eclectic structure has compelled architectural interest since its inception. Inspired by the myriad traditions of architects past, Robert R. Robertson blended Victorian and Roman Revival styles alongside Byzantine and neogothic detail. The result is curiously picturesque, combining yellow brick, terra cotta and carved stone, whimsical faces, animals, Celtic knots, vines and gargoyles. .

The result is curiously picturesque, combining yellow brick, terra cotta and carved stone, whimsical faces, animals, Celtic knots, vines and gargoyles. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #cornice  #lintel  #arches  #columns  #architecture  #archdaily  #design  #historical  #preservation  #citybeautiful  #flatiron  #nomad  #broadway  #corinthiancolumns  #romanrevival  #romanesque  #byzantine  #neogrec  #neogothic  #victorian  #landmarks  #citybeautiful  #lookup  #gf_nyc  #ig_masterpiece  #streetsofnyc  #streetphotography  #nyclandmarks  #victorian  #citylights

The Old City Guardhouse, now called the Schinkelwache, 1832, designed by KF Schinkel. In many places, this building would be a big deal. In Dresden, in the shadow of 2 buildings by Gottfried Semper, it's an Information Center and cafe. Not even individually listed in some guide books. .

200 Fifth overlooks Madison Square Park and stands across from the historic Flatiron Building. The 16-story structure, known as the Toy Center, opened as an office site in 1909, with construction completed a few years later. Today, the interior has been completely remodeled, even as the facade maintains its original terra-cotta embellishment.
