And here’s the Parthenon in Centennial Park, Nashville, Tennessee. A full-scale replica of the one in Athens. That’s Athens Greece. Nor any of the other Athens dotted throughout the US. It was designed by Confederate veteran architect William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. Smith quit his architectural practice and decided to go back to war. He died of heat exhaustion in the Battle of Manila, Philippines, in 1899. @parthenoninnashville #nashvilleparthenon#athensusa#confederateofficer
Getting our Greek on with our Classical Conversations homeschool group today. We are fortunate to live so closely to such a tangible, hands-on way to extend our ancient and world history studies, particularly our study of Mythology this school year. 💛
If you ever visit Nashville, it’s worth a trip to our Parthenon!
Have you ever been to the Parthenon? Either the one in Athens or the one in Nashville?
I’ve been to both! Today was Nashville though. Did you know that the Parthenon in Nashville is an exact replica of the Parthenon in Athens? Each one is magnificent in its own right.
P.S. The first time I saw the Parthenon in Athens was the summer after 7th grade. My cousins & I could see it from our hotel room window, and we named it “Parthy Baby.” Yes, for reals. -nic
Did you know that Nashville has a full-size replica of the Greek Parthenon? It’s the only one in the entire world. The only difference is that it wasn’t made of marble, but of concrete.
It was originally created for Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition in 1897 and not supposed to be a permanent attraction, but it was so popular that after the exhibition it was decided to build a permanent one. It functions as an art museum and houses a Athena Parthenos statue, just like the original Parthenon used to have. #nashville#nashville_tn#nashvilletn#nashvilleparthenon#parthenon#parthenonnashville#tennessee#tennesseeinstagram#visitnashville
Travel tip 💌 Leave some room in your itinerary for getting lost in the cities you visit! You might just stumble upon something completely unexpected, like a replica of the Parthenon in the middle of Nashville 🤷🏼♀️
What’s your most unexpected find?
Couldn’t make it to our 10 year high school reunion so we’re having our own! DMASH is back in the states! Next up, I’m going to Europe. Until then, Nashville Parthenon it is! 0️⃣8️⃣ ➡️ #besties#reunion#timeflies
