This is Molokhia. It’s in the okra family. I love the seeds and seed pods of this plant. Hopefully some will reseed so I can cook with the leaves too. Kristyn @namu_farm grew this plant and cultivated land at the #sunolagpark for many years! I will be expanding my farm and taking over Krystin’s acreage this year. I’m sad to see Kristyn leave but excited for her new adventures farming in Winters. #blumafarm#flowerfarmer#molokhia#namufarm
Emo ume: when things feel possible and fragile and you read the overwhelm of the week on a branch of fruit.
This is the ume, beginning to emerge from tiny blossoms at @namu_farm #ume#umevision#umecam#namufarm
So sweet to spend the morning saying goodbyes to the farm at Sunol, potting up the baby plants to bring them to new homes... looking forward to the next chapter for @namu_farm. Also making room for all the feels that come with goodbyes- I’ve learned so much from witnessing this farm grow and change over the past few years. It’s been precious to plant a little patch of herbs here, and observe how happily the Goldenrod has spread its roots, and see the Agrimony surely and steadily seeding itself into a tiny forest. I’ve come to know who are the gophers favorites and who survives the frost, coming out of Winter looking even stronger. I’ve learned so much from this beautiful community that is this farm, and hope all the love and care put into this magikal place will live on in the soil and the new generations of plants to come. Thank you Krystin endlessly for the gift of the friendship we’ve grown through this land, and for every single vegetable and seed you’ve shared with me. I’m in awe of the ways you grow... and to @ajhadwin for coming out today and playing in the soil with me! #farmfriends#namufarm#growyourownmedicine
Introducing Better Chamoe. Kristyn Leach of Namu Farm (@namu_farm) in Sunol, California grew this flavorful and culturally important variety for the Truelove Seeds catalog. Order her seeds now at www.trueloveseeds.com
Read the seed story, featuring a time and flavor before Japanese hybridization and hometown resistance to US militarism, in Kristyn's words:
This landrace Korean melon variety has all the classic attributes that makes chamoe beloved by Koreans: crisp flesh with much of the sweetness coming from the seeds and pulp, and a flavor combo of cucumber, honeydew, and apple. Less sweet than modern hybrids, the flavor is quite interesting, refreshing, and somewhat floral.
Chamoe is a symbol of summer in Korea. They are distinctly part of Korean culture on the peninsula and in the diaspora. This variety pre-dates Japanese intervention into chamoe breeding, where they crossed native Korean melons with Japanese cultivars. Most modern commercial strains are a product of this hybridization. This variety has been protected by small growers in Korea, and as a result, it's production habit reflects desirable traits for subsistence farmers: vigor without the need for commercial fertilizer, long harvest window reducing the need for multiple successions, and harvest volume appropriate for small scale.
It's particularly significant to honor the chamoe right now, as melon farmers in Sosongri are on the front lines combating the US THAAD installation in their region. Gyeonsangbuk-do is the center of chamoe production and also happens to be the province where I was born. Over the summer I visited Kristyn's farm and she generously spent the entire afternoon with us, sharing her stories and feeding us chamoe and poha berries. Tomorrow, this amazing human being, farmer and food justice advocate is going to grace our stage to talk about the importance of cultivating seeds to preserve culture and its role in regenerative agriculture. Kristyn Leach of @namu_farm will be in conversation with @shak_simley and the dynamic duo of @nokni_oakland (Chefs Steve Joo and Julya Shin) who also curated our dinner menu. Special performances by @doheemago and @xtinehlee1. Ticket link in bio! •
Well this was my fav afternoon all month. How delightful & intelligent heritage seeds (& lovely people) are to this world. It's worth everything to push back against monocrop, industrialized systems, because these miss the meaning, magic & climate resiliency possible in keeping traditions alive. Thank you small POC growers, backyard fam gardeners, fierce seed keepers, for ensuring these are protected for future generations. As a Pinay I imagine a timeline of how corn developed in the Americas across thousands of years, then crossed the Pacific from Mexico 300 years ago to become part of the archipelago diet, & now living here in CA with corn ... Glass gem corn harvest!!! The #GlassGemBabes managed a couple of hours @namu_farm (mostly eating) and then harvesting the first #glassgemcorn of the season. Some of these seeds were selected by the folks who attended our FARM meal April 1st. And now, look!!!!!! MAGIC!!! ✨🌽✨#namufarm#glassgemcorn#carlbarnes @aileensuzara @justuskitchen #sinmaiznohaypais

It’s asking for us to infuse our movements with a lot of humility, and it’s also offering back an opportunity within the radical community to think about what it would be like to really divest from the system we live in.” Read more about how this new program is serving to bridge Korean history to the #goodfood and farm justice movements today on #CivilEats .
SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PLANTS!!! 🌱✨❤️Inspired by frutas cristalizadas, I soaked Kristyn's chamoe, bittermelon, tomatillos, and tomatoes in cal and passed them on to Aileen who simmered them for three nights in sugar water. Now they sunbathe and, if all goes well they are good at room temp for over six months. The Philippines and Mexico share this lime/cal curing process - if anyone know the route, and more about alkaline ingredients in foods of the global south, holla. These brujas want to know. #research#brujatestkitchen#sisterhoodofthetravellingplants#sitastestkitchen#frutascristalizadas#namufarm @aileensuzara @namu_farm experiments inspired by @fanygerson 's #mysweetmexico and @amycbesa 's insta feed
What does fruit have to do with missiles? In Sosongri, South Korea, elderly melon farmers are fiercely resisting a US middle defense system (THAAD). Kristyn Leach is growing these melons at @namu_farm and we'll have a few to taste at Saturday's remedy stand.
Sat August 19th 3-6pm at 28th & Magnolia we'll be popping up with a kitchen remedy stand. Stop by, hang out, and share your remedies for everything from upset stomach to white supremacy - we out here looking to cook up a cure.

I always look forward to learning what Kristyn has to teach us at @namu_farm , digging my feet deep into the soil, eating a nourishing meal and celebrating our diasporic Korean community (as adoptees, mixed-race, multi-generational im/migrant individuals of layered identities, different orientations, genders and journeys). Thank you to the organizers and good souls of #nonghwal . #namufarm#supportpocfarms
You know those folks that everyone assumes you already know and is shocked that you don't? Well, MamaSita finally met @mamakanchan of @spiralgardensofficial !!! We made magical color changing tea with the @samasamacooperative kids and a bag full of shiso from @namu_farm . You could say the shiso introduced us because plants do that sometimes. Side note: plants really like it when you're dressed to match 🌸🎆💓
I feel warmth, softness, and community amongst diasporeans at Namu Farm, and I always think of my 할머니 quietly maintaining her Korean-Maryland garden. #namufarm https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-11-29/korean-adoptee-finds-her-heritage-through-farming , http://theplate.nationalgeographic.com/2016/01/21/planting-vegetables-in-california-a-woman-finds-her-korean-roots/
What do you get when you combine Farmer Kristyn, Tita Aileen, and Filipino summer camp @samasamacooperative ? MAGIC ⚡️we joined them on a visit to Namu and an introduction to so many plants including the glass gem corn from our April 1st meal. They're holding Kristyn's glass gems way up high in this photo! ❤️🌱@namu_farm @aileensuzara #foodjustice#samasamacollective#namufarm#glassgemcorn#airandliberation
Last Saturday's fundraising pop-up dinner for @alliedmedia featured purple Korean radish, red shiso, garlic, scallions, carrot tops, and wild radish greens from @namu_farm, all incorporated in the atchara, itlog na maalat salad and sisig. The pig's head for the sisig came from @truegrassfarms 😱big thank you to @mooninmyname and to everyone who made it out to this dinner and helped us raise money for the @alliedmediaconference ❤️😍👏🏾🙌🏾 looking forward to coming back to the big D this week to do a pop up with @sarapdetroit 😱😱😱😍🇵🇭🙌🏾
Happy Friday folks! Getting prep ready for tomorrow's pop-up with @mooninmyname in Oakland for our fundraiser dinner for @alliedmediaconference. @namu_farm and @truegrassfarms are my local partners in getting this dinner together. RSVP in link in my bio 🔝🇵🇭👏🏾
A wonderful day spent with our "hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature" amongst amazing Diasporeans at @namu_farm -- Kristyn was generous in sharing her knowledge, and I couldn't be more grateful for the organizing that went behind this #좋은날#행복#농업#집단기억#namufarm
Kristyn from @namu_farm changed the way I think about flavor - she also inspired two student projects from my course #atasteofresistance - Amos M. Built a worm composting bin based on a prototype of plastic kimchi tubs and @havanow contributed three giant ceramic vessels to catch rainwater. With Kristyn around, farming is contagious. Thank you for all that you do!!! #namufarm#naturalfarming

As we know all too well, "where are you from" is a complicated question. After going loopy researching the disputed origins and migration of Korean chilies for our April 1st meal, we asked farmer/collaborator @namu_farm where Korean chilies are from. She reminded us that these stories are complicated because we have co-evolved with plants.
Which brings us back to these chilies, last season's "lady hermit" - a name inspired by the seed scholar who has worked to preserve this plant. This heirloom is from Sunchang and grown locally at Namu Farm with Oakland based @kitazawa_seed - all chilies are believed to be indigenous to the Americas. 📸by @namu_farm
This "tea" of willow branches provides nutrients to these little baby onions before they're planted and become big ol onions at @namu_farm
Onions have been cultivated for over 5,000 years and are believed to have originated from either Central Asia, or what is now Iran and west Pakistan.
We recently heard from an elder whose childhood asthma was treated with a home remedy of onion juice in Pakistan. Do you have any onion remedies? We'd love to know. #namufarm#peopleskitchencollective#decolonize#research#kitchenremedies
We asked @namu_farm what we would be on our plates this spring if we were only eating off the farm. The answer? Dried beans, dried corn, and squash stored from last season. After years of drought, the abundance of rain means soggy soil, dirt that turns to clay, and, in some cases, devastating flooding. Farmers will be planting late this year. We're so thankful for all of the hands that make our food possible. For all of their work and their wisdom. #decolonize#namufarm#peopleskitchencollective#corn#glassgemcorn#carlbarnes#nativeseeds
Hung out with my pup and some very handsome Goldenrod on @namu_farm today. Harvested a few beans, catnip and lemon balm too. Thanks @shootingstarbotanicals for some quality medicine and chill time!! #namufarm#medicinalherbs 🌾🌻🌸🐿🌳
A day at the wall with @cececarpio and an afternoon at @namu_farm - to plant seeds for chuseok, a celebration of harvest and ancestors, aka Korean Thanksgiving. Kristyn told us to stomp and dance like we meant it to help the seeds grow. It was the most beautiful of days and left me feeling like my life is really incredible. @shootingstarbotanicals @justuskitchen @saqibkeval @sanajaverikadri @mia_nakano_oakland @chungtech #peopleskitchencollective#foodjustice#namufarm#djumibear
Poha Berry growing @namu_farm. This bushy plant produces a unique fruit encased in a papery husk, indicating it's close relation to tomatillo and Chinese lantern. They are delicious cooked or made into jam, but we find it hard to resist popping them all into our mouths raw as we harvest! Item 239 on our site. #kitazawaseedco#namufarm#pohaberry#capegooseberry
Good morning, Chestnut Bean! This brown-striped heirloom Korean soybean comes via @namu_farm - follow them on IG - they (and particularly Kristyn Leach) are preserving and proliferating important Korean heirlooms with a lot of integrity in terms of supporting Korean farmers, and in terms of using natural farming methods, and are major inspirations to me!!!! #chestnutbean#heirloomsoybean#koreansoybean#namufarm#glycinemax#heuksalim#seedkeeping
I feel like a kid who just found out hot cheetos grow on trees. Red shiso furikake on rice was my favorite growing up - but I never thought about how it was made. @namufarms recently gifted me a giant bag of red shiso for my ume project and I started to wonder... You salt the shiso, massage a deep purple liquid from it, and pickle it in vinegar and salt. Then, you sun dry the shiso and crumble it. It's only been a day and the color of the vinegar is an unreal magenta. One question for the picklers out there, how long do I leave it in the brine before drying it? #namufarm#foodofmypeople#sitaskitchen #🌈themoreyouknow🌈
There's still tickets available to come tour my farm and Namu farm tomorrow. Check the link listed above. I'll be selling at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays starting in June! #blumafarm#namufarm#sunolagpark#cuesa
