I've always considered myself to be a big introvert, but lately P E O P L E have been filling my cup.
Normally I crave alone time, peace and quiet. I thought I would be focused on career success, especially in my twenties, but lately my focus has been on the people I love. Don't get me wrong, I still want to be a boss babe, but I've realized that what's truly important is taking that time to look someone in the eyes, have deep and meaningful conversations, and making impactful memories. Having our friends here this week and my sweet little baby niece (people who you choose to be family are the best kinds of people) are just a gentle reminder that my gratefulness is so wrapped up in those tangible, heart-giving times rather than achievements and accomplishments. There's time for that and there's time to be alone, but seeing those I love grow and change is what is really on my mind these days. I guess too I'm just sappy that my friends and family are willing to travel halfway across the world to adventure with us 🌎.
I'm so grateful to the friend who - in 2016 - said, "have you considered an au pair?".
An au what?
What even is that?
They live in-house with you?
But I live in a tiny 3 bedroom home.
With one bathroom.
And one toilet.
We don't have enough room.
What if I need to argue with my husband?
Like, without an audience?
What if my children turn our au pair off children.
Like, for life.
So many questions, and after my friend patiently answered everything I realised, wow, an au pair is like, ... a live-in village for the women - like me - who don't have villages to help them raise their children, and when you're a working Mother? ... kinda necessary.
2 years on? Best decision we made for our family. And the only hard part? ... the fact that I cry like a baby [or Muriel, from Muriel's Wedding] when they leave. #truestory .
This here little bedroom will welcome our last au pair for the Summer before both of my children are off to school next year, and I'm in full reflection-mode thinking about the incredible young women [and the diverse cultures] we've welcomed into this room, our home, and most definitely? ... our hearts.
Happy birthday to the guy that is rarely in front of the camera, but behind me every step of the way.
You’re the foundation of our family and the one we can always depend on. I hope you feel as special today as you make us feel every single day. •
Happy Birthday Mike!
