All the color work I’ve been doing and finally a chance to test it on a portrait! I haven’t really been shooting people lately, but I’m looking to do more.
Also usually color’s more popular so I guess the bnws for me.
Portrait of a Batwa woman
Batwa Pygmy Village, Uganda
The Batwa are one of the last groups of short-statured people also known as Pygmies and were the original indigenous dwellers of the equatorial forests in Central Africa. They were called “The Keepers of the Forest” because they lived in harmony with nature, in small huts made from sticks and grass, relying on the rainforest for their existence and only taking what was needed. Anthropologists estimate that pygmy tribes like the Batwa have lived here for at least 60,000 years. Despite their long historical existence and wide acceptance as the original inhabitants of these areas, they don’t have any legal title to the land. Therefore, when the National Parks were established for the protection of the forests, wildlife and primates such as the Mountain Gorillas in 1991, the authorities evicted the Batwa from their forest home without compensation. The Batwa became environmental refugees, squatters existing in extreme poverty on the parks’ boundaries, looking in where they used to live. Without land of their own or the skills to compete in today’s world, the Batwa have become marginalized, discriminated against, and their rights as indigenous peoples are neither recognized nor respected.
Enough fantasising about tropical getaways - back to reality. Posting a blue tones street shot because my feed has been so predominately red lately. I’m versatile like that ;) I can do a whole rainbow of candids 😂 At the risk of keeping you awake with excitement, I’ll give you a heads up that I’ll be posting photographs containing orange and green tomorrow. Try to remain calm.
