“‘Obsessed with shoes’ was probably an understatement to describe my youth. Every teenage boy can tell you the first time he fell in love. I can too – it was with a pair of black, patent leather Gucci shoes. I saw them online and I had to have them.
My uncle used to manufacture shoes for big companies and I’d often give him designs I found online and get some custom made – I’d alter the designs according to my taste. I always knew this was going to be what I did with my life.
After college, I told my dad I couldn’t join the family business. He understood – I mean he did spend years bearing with a shoe-crazy son! He was glad I was ready to start my own business. Soon, I started a small unit to manufacture shoe covers in 2011 with my dad’s help!
I made contacts for my fabulous shoe business and learned everything that I could! I’d even go shopping with my girl friends to learn about the latest trends. They actually prefer I go with them because I’m so interested in the details, unlike other guys.
Eventually, in 2013, I started my own trading business. I had a list of manufacturers I’d send designs to and I was selling
2000 pairs of shoes a month! I’d work out of a tiny room that I used as a warehouse, with only 1 employee. I managed the rest of the front-end and client servicing.
I considered myself the ‘shoe whisperer’, aware of every style. I even had a bet with a few friends over which design would sell – I put it into my collection and it got sold out! I realised soon that all my knowledge was from the internet and the trends around the world.
This is why I’d often prefer buying online. The sheer volume of choices made it so desirable. So in 2014, I registered myself to Amazon and I ended up selling 4500 units in a month–double of what I sold earlier. And with that my personal collection of shoes has increased too! I have 30 pairs of shoes, which is just the beginning. Each online sale, is a boost for my closet too!”
