The ‘healing in’ process is not meant to insulate plants over winter, but rather to reduce the freeze/thaw cycles and tissue damage. Here is an example of what tender woodys such as roses might look like using organic mulch and a top layer of leaf litter.
I've been mulching! Probably the most straight forward and rewarding garden job. I use wood chip for longevity and aesthetics (cant abide bare soil) alternatives include compost, leafmold, lawnclippings, mushroom compost, straw, gravel, bark, pine needles, wood ash - the list goes on. Each has a different benefit depending on the overall garden situation.
Mulching is awesome because it...
1.Traps moisture in the soil - less watering.
2. Creates an insulating layer - protects plant roots from hot and cold conditions.
3. Adds organic material high in nutrients - encourages worms (great for soil aeration).
4. Contains beneficial micro organisms as it breaks down which enter the soil.
5. Prevents weed germination - great for lowering maintenance.
6. Protects the soils humus layer (which contains most of the soils nutrients) from erosion.
7. Improves soil structure eventually - drainage or moisture retention.
8. Can alter the local PH level over time (pine or wood ash).
9. Deters some pests.
10. Looks aesthetically pleasing.
A few things to avoid are mulching too thickly (stick to 5 -7 cm) and placing the mulch directly up to the base of woody stems (trees/shrubs) as it can encourage disease to set it.
Good times to mulch are in spring and autumn when the soil is warm and moist. In summation mulching boils down to this equation: Mulch = happy soil = happy plants = happy gardener!
Do you mulch?
The Hill - this job was one of the most challenging ones we have had. It's one very steep hill! As you swipe through these photos you will see the degree of difficulty, and the transformation! My personal favorite is the ladder used for plant out 😂😂 @anthony_ring_excavations @penconpremix #tower_scapes
