This is a little project I’ve been wanting to do and excited to share for quite some time!!! I’d like to present #DisneyFeatureExpansion !!! This is pretty much me suggesting folktales and fairytales from across the world that I personally believe would make fantastic future Disney films!! The first one is Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only kid who adored reading this book!! If you don’t know the story its about two beautiful but very different sisters, kind hearted Nyasha and bad tempered Manyara, who are set on a journey to a great city in order to see which one will be worthy of becoming the queen.
Disney has already given us a movie displaying Polynesian culture with Moana I would love to see the same treatment with African culture, primarily Zimbabwe which is where this folktale is from! Can you just imagine the lush landscapes they could explore, and all the opportunities for some PROPER animal sidekicks again (looking at you Hei Hei 😒), and the music!! I can only imagine what they would be able to pull off with the music!! I would also love to see another sister relationship. Controversial opinion here but the sister dynamic in Frozen didn’t do anything for me personally. The characters are still cool but I feel like their relationship could have been fleshed out more. I still think the best sister dynamic we ever got was Lilo and Nani. The complicated relationship between Manyara and Nyasha could be fleshed out in a Disney film and be the source of some of the most heartwarming scenes.

Some days are still a struggle...I still fight through periods of feeling low or having a hard time recognizing my purpose and who I am. That’s why I’m so grateful for this style by the lovely @sheeshallcreate. It’s a necessary reminder to me that I’m rooted in Christ AND crowned by The King. She created a spur of the moment and unique style that highlighted the health/strength of my roots and is reminiscent of the hairstyles in “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters”. She was just tasked with giving me a style that will last underwater, but, unbeknownst to her, God utilized her gifted hands remind me of not only who I am, but who’s I am 😊
Please hit her up for your hair needs. @sheeshallcreate ‘s hands create beauty and speak to the soul ☺️ #SheeshallCreateHair#RootedAndCrowned#mufarosbeautifuldaughters#ChasingPurpose#RediscoveringMe#PurposelessWifeComingSoon
Elle has been all about the classics. Another book from mama’s childhood! This is Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. Some of the words are a bit advanced for E but she pushes through. How often do you see Black princesses and queens in children’s books? 🤷🏾♀️ This book is such a dynamic lesson of how kindness wins. We also talked about how “some” women get married and some don’t…and that’s okay. That part went above Elle’s head and for now…mama is grateful. 😂
Found this gem at the library last week. What a gift! When I was small, this was my very favorite book. I’ve been looking for it ever since but didn’t know the title or author. But here she is- the kids are enjoying it and the illustrations are exactly as I remember them. Beautiful story, beautiful book. I highly recommend Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe. 📚🐛 #gwynethrecommends#johnsteptoe#mufarosbeautifuldaughters#lovethisbook#newberryawardwinner
Cinderella & Culture 🌎 📖 👑
Did you know there are several different versions of Cinderella? Yeh-Shen was written in 850 A.D. This is a fabulous way to expose children to different cultures through the love of a classic story! Plus it will build creativity and help our little ones think outside of the box. Swipe for samples! There are so many! #koreancinderella#egyptiancinderella#mufarosbeautifuldaughters#thegoldensandal#yeh -shen
Today was my first time visiting this exquisite establishment! I had time to kill while waiting for the Mini Me to get her hair done LOL. My heart was immediately filled with warmth walking in...the selection of books were AMAZING! I was delighted to see the children’s 👶🏽 section had most of the books I have bought over the years for my own. My FAVORITE book as a child was eloquently perched on the shelf in all its splendor (Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe). I definitely need every hoodie and shirt sold in there...they all speak to my inner book 🤓 nerd. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The menu was just enough that I as a vegetarian have options but not too much where I would ponder too long on what I would want. I ran into the founder of the book club I’m in @get.cha.mind.right it was GREAT seeing you Steph!!! Make sure at one point or another to check out this spot ❤️❤️❤️#supportblackbusiness#blackbookstore#unclebobbiescoffeeandbooks#marclamonthill#mufarosbeautifuldaughters#johnsteptoe
“A long time ago, in a certain place in Africa, a small village lay Across a river and half a day’s journey from a city where a great king lived. A man named Mufaro lived in this village with his two daughters were called Manyara and Nyasha. Everyone agree that Manyara and Nyasha were very beautiful...” #mufarosbeautifuldaughters#bnplit#bnpnerdling#kidslit

My #FBF is in honor of children’s author and illustrator John Steptoe who wrote one of my favorite childhood books of all time, “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters.” I remember asking my mom to buy me “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” yet she returned with this book (lol) and thankfully she did... Because John saw the importance of capturing the African experience through storytelling, at a very young age I saw characters that looked like me and could be proud of the stories that were told about me. In recognition of Black History Month, I salute all the writers and artists - those we constantly hear about and the ones we do not - who inspire little boys and girls of color (like me) to follow in their footsteps and dream big. #blackhistorymonth#mufarosbeautifuldaughters#johnsteptoe
