Martha Kayel Harrington, CNP, is a certified nurse practitioner.  Mrs. Harrington received her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Delta State University.

She is board certified as a family nurse practitioner by The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and is a member of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association, the American Nurses’ Association, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. 
Mrs. Harrington is also a veteran who serves as an officer in the Army Nurse Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve.

Gradual Lifestyle Changes. ✨I started my fitness journey by making gradual lifestyle changes. I reduced the portion sizes of “junk” foods I ate and then my next step was eating them less frequently during the week. 
I believe that any food is alright in moderation, but I think it is best for me to eat mostly whole foods. This week has been busier than normal in prep for vacation, January and just my life in general. So, I dedicated to drop all cardio this week including my treadmill walking. .
I just lifted heavy weights with limited breaks all week and I am so so so sore.  More sore than I have been in a while.  #sorefreshing .
I don’t step on the scale, so I can’t say for sure, but I am feeling lighter and tighter so I know I lost fat this week in doing so. .
I am going to keep this up for 6 weeks and see where it gets me .

First, because it helped raise money for @jah4ww - Wounded Warriors Foundation, a great cause which helps build homes for our veterans 🇺🇸
Second, because it fit within my fitness journey and goal of inspiring others 💪🏽

As promised, I have not stepped on the scale for a little over 2 months. .

As stupid as this sounds, this task has been a challenging one for me.  There have been several times where I felt prompted to step on out of habit but then I stop myself knowing that that small action, that daunting number won’t serve me mentally or physically, so I refrain. 
At one point, I tried to convince myself that my new iscale was too expensive to not be used 🤷‍♀️. Then I realized I was negotiating with my damn self so I put the scale in the closet because I sounded like a crazy ass .
.
My only goals are right now are to be happy, flexible with my food choices for once, cut myself some lack if I indulge more than normal, to get back to enjoyable forms of exercise, to attain a physique that I find suitable for everyday life.  A body without pressure, pressure of being a certain “shape” that is deemed “in” by any judge. I will be my own judge. .
Right now, I am choosing to evaluate my progress based on;
▪️how my clothes are fitting .
▪️how I am feeling .
▪️what my 4 week progress photos are looking like .
▪️and by asking trusted friends if it appears that I am positively progressing towards what they know to be my goals .

It really isn’t all that important.

Don't under-estimate your potential at any age or any stage in life.

A busy mom of two and I'm in better shape {both physically and mentally} now at 32 then I was at 22.

Strong, not skinny. Body shaming is body shaming whether your telling someone they are fat {hate that word} or telling them they are too skinny.

But for me it's not about appearance. It's about nourishing your body so that it can perform optimally.

Being able to sustain energy and be energetic is important to me.
.
Being anxiety and depression free is important to me.
.
Modelling health and keeping active for my daughters is important to me.
.
How much I weigh or how lean I am. Not important to me.
.
I used health and fitness to free myself from #anxiety and #depression and I'm going to keep going.

Keeping active and following a meal plan-yes,

But it was mindset, determination and consistency that were the key ingredients.

It's about nourishing your body so that it can perform optimally. . Being able to sustain energy and be energetic is important to me. . Being anxiety and depression free is important to me. . Modelling health and keeping active for my daughters is important to me. . How much I weigh or how lean I am. Not important to me. . Since deciding to hang up the hooker heels I have found myself somewhat lost. 🤷‍♀️.
.
For the last 7 years my life has been broken down into two seasons:
.
“Off” season aka improvement season as I like to refer to it as because I was never really “off” anything. I eat the same all year long, just quantities are different .
.
“On” season - the most mentally taxing and longest 4 months of the year (or so it seems) but my favourite part of prep because it really shows you what your capable of as a person and displays the proof of your offseason eating and lifting efforts .
.
NEW SEASON 🎉🎉
“Life” season which would be where I am sitting right about now.  I am still eating the same quality of foods with attempts to continue to grow my calories with minimal fat gains, I am still lifting weights 6x/week as I always do because I love it.  I am limiting my cardio no more to amounts I find enjoyable and it certainly is not what one would consider intense at all. (IE treadmill walking) .
This is a new season for me as I am trying to be a little more relaxed with my food choices and just trying to be flexible in my approach to exercise, food and just enjoying life in general.  #struggle 
This process may be so far the hardest because I am learning to try and lessen some of the habits I have been diligent about for 7 years now. .

It’s a process, I will learn how to be the me I wish to be, I know that won’t happen overnight, I am okay with that. 
In closing, be kind. 
Even the most confident people can struggle. ✌️

Howe To: Bridge Hold 🍑.

To do the Basic Glute Bridge Hold, bend your knees and put your feet flat on the ground just close enough that you can graze your heels with your fingertips when you stretch your arms down by your side. Your feet should be about hip-width apart. You can change up how far your heels are from your butt to make sure you feel your glutes powering the bridge. If your hips are tight, you may need to move your feet further out. Just make sure you don’t feel your hamstrings taking over.
Bend your elbows to 90 degrees so that only your upper arms are on the ground then drive up through your heels and upper back and arm to lift your glutes up off the ground. Drive your hips up as high as possible, squeezing the glutes hard. Brace your abs and extend your hips so that you don’t hyperextend your back.
Do not push backward off your heels. Make sure you are driving straight up almost as if driving your knees forward over your toes. Also, make sure that your knees don’t cave in or fall open.
Squeeze your glutes and hold at the top. Concentrate on feeling your glutes work. Don’t just go through the motions. Actually think about the muscles that should be working as you hold. .
Try this exercise at home 1-2x per week and you will find your lower back with become stronger as well. ✌️.

Feeling super privileged and grateful to have been able to be the guest speaker for @jburrell_simplehealthyliving TRIBE at @muscederevineyards last night. .
I do not think that my life is extraordinary by any stretch and I still don’t know why the fuck any one who choose me as a speaker but I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get to talk about my struggles, my hardships and some of the successes that I have had personally and professionally.  Oh, and swear a lot with other inappropriate likeminded new friends so always fun. .
It is so amazing what we as women, and people in general can accomplish when we support and uplift, instead of compete and hate on each other. ✌️
