I contemplated posting this picture for a few reasons, but I felt that it is important for me to be as open, true & honest with my following. I want to share my journey & inspire others that not every journey is picture perfect. .

Yes, you can look at this picture and see that my waist is smaller, I’ve lost about 10lbs, that my body fat is probably lower (I haven’t measured) & that I have more muscle definition, BUT what you don’t see is the internal transformation that took place here. .
.

Back in March I was really struggling. When I started with my nutritionist @briannadiorio she told me we have to heal my body from the inside out, after a few years of not being so nice to it. .
.

I could not believe more the saying “your outsides are a true indicator to what your insides look like.” .
.

For a few years I was under eating, excessively working out, putting physical & emotional stress on myself & doing whatever it took to look a certain way. Your body can only handle so much for so long before it shuts down. .
.

About a year later I can finally say that my insides are healing & my outside is starting to display that. .
.

Did I diet & workout more from March until now? NOPE. .
.

Just allowing my body to find where it feels happiest & healthiest & where it can THRIVE. .
.

This means
✅eating healthy, wholesome foods
✅no restrictions
✅workout 5x per week
✅2 rest days
✅monitoring my stress
✅laughing & smiling
✅LIVING .
.

If you are someone who has been “dieting” for as long as you can remember, I suggest taking a step back & give your body a break. Allow it to find its happy place. You’d be so surprised that sometimes doing LESS can benefit you MORE. .

Top 3 Reasons I Don’t Step on the Scale (Anymore)

1. My weight doesn’t matter. I worked so long and hard to get to this point. Weighing myself has never had a positive impact, aside from the fleeting satisfaction of an arbitrary number that would immediately need to be lower in my head once I reached my “goal.” I had a major issue last year with my fifth grade class being tested on BMI. The panic. The doubts. Everyone that stepped up on the scale asked if they “passed” and I told them they were perfect. Fifth grade!!! And BMI is known to be inaccurate. So. Wrong.
.
2. The last time I was on a scale was about... seven months ago. I feel free. I wear what I want and my body image is not bound to a number, because I have no idea. I feel more “me” and show up in the gym, to events, and for myself, because I no longer have to make decisions based on if I deserve to go. So many missed events and gatherings, so much self-hatred, because I felt like I wouldn’t belong, solely based on stepping on that scale that day. Or four times.

3. Depending on the time in my cycle, I’ll gain multiple pounds overnight. This is not uncommon. So, as opposed to berating myself, now I just think “Oh, yep. Here we go.” And then I maybe complain to Walker that I am feeling ungrounded or want to cry for no reason or something, but it’s always the hormones associated with the time and it’s WHATEVER. I can’t control that! What the hell. I spent years of melt downs over knowing that every month I’d gain, when really it simply didn’t matter. Bodies and lives have cycles. Sometimes I’m one weight and then I’m another and then I’m another. Guess what, it’s totally normal. And the heavier doesn’t mean you’re any less worthy of anything. You matter simply by being alive.

I heard a great quote and will now do the honor of butchering it. Basically, it’s said that Rosa Parks and Malala Yousafzai’s weight didn’t matter when they changed the world. They showed up with strength and wouldn’t be silenced. Don’t let your weight keep you from showing up and making the difference you were meant to make.

Find your confidence, shine your light, and ditch the scale. Don’t let anything stop you.

The squat is one of our most fundamental movements, so identifying and correcting squat dysfunction can help to improve daily movements.

Here are 3 mobility exercises you can do to improve your  squat:
-
1)90/90 Transfers - sitting on the ground, bring one leg out in front at 90 degrees, with the back leg at 90 degrees (align your heels). From here, hinge open your back leg as far as you can until your front pulls off the ground, then rotate your torso transitioning your legs to 90/90 facing the opposite direction.

2)Hip Pulses - in a half kneel, hinge your hips backward then push forward through the pelvis while pulling outward on the front leg to open up the hip joint.

3)Ankle Dorsi Pulses- Plant your heel and toe against a wall or rack, then bend your knee forward and backward to take your ankle through maximal dorsi flexion.

Perform slowly and controlled with 3-second pauses, then try those pesky squats again 🏋🏼‍♂️.

Some advice from our coach. 🏋️‍♂️ Always approach a barbell the same way, whether an empty bar or heavy. Routine and consistency is everything, when going for a heavy lift. 
Dont underestimate the importance of adequate rest and recovery. This includes mobilising your BODY.

There’s no short cut to living a healthier life ❌ It’s going to take some time ⏱⁣⁣

During the ending of 2017, I started a new job, it’s holiday season, and my body was having hard time adjusting to everything. So I fell off track, and created unhealthier habits 😐⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Then 2018 started, and I knew I needed to change. I need to be FEEL healthier and BE healthier.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
❇️ To get back on track, I started with getting back to the gym 2 times a week (literally my days off). Once I made that a habit, I made it a goal to go 3 times a week. Made that a habit, then made it a goal to go 4 times a week.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
❇️ I didn’t go all in by going 5x a week, I slowly created little habits and goals for myself to get to where I am today.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
❇️ With nutrition, you should not cut everything out right away. Cut out one thing at a time. (For example, first focus on cutting out SODA and drink more water. Then once you make that a habit, focus on eating health 5x a week)⁣⁣
⁣⁣

✖️Why you should be aware of your heart rate during exercise✖️

Being mindful of your HR while exercising can help you lose weight, maintain body weight, reduce blood sugar levels, and improve insulin sensitivity…just to name a few.
⠀
When you’re hitting your personal HR zones consistently, you’ll see results.
⠀
HR ranges can differ by age, height, weight, body composition, and stress level. Which means that the chart on the cardio machine isn’t accurate enough.
⠀
When performing cardio such as HIIT, the purpose is not to progressively hit your highest ever heart rates. It’s actually to train your heart rate to lower during similar activities. This can take up to several-months of consistent training.
⠀
The science behind that: Your heart pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout your body to fuel aerobic activity. The stronger the heart muscle, the more blood it pumps every time it beats, therefore the fewer times it beats per minute. In turn, lowering your heart rate.

The goal is to run faster without your heart having to beat faster.
⠀
The best way to monitor your intensity is by wearing a heart rate monitor (such as a Fitbit). However if you don’t have one, you can measure your intensity by:

1.Checking your pulse
2.How you feel:
⠀
-Low intensity: you are able to have a conversation with your neighbor.
-Moderate intensity: it is difficult to say more than a few words without pausing for breath.
-High intensity: you can’t hold a conversation, meant for very short periods of time.

Everyone’s max heart rate is different. Those who are more physically fit, are able to perform higher intensity at a lower heart rate. As opposed to those who have not been physically active and see their heart rate spike after only completing limited work.

Being aware of your heart rate is not only safe but also provides you with the knowledge be more efficient in the gym.

Using a peck deck fly machine to grow your chest is a great idea, but not doing it right and wasting your time will......WASTE YOUR TIME.

So just to go over the video, the biggest mistake I would like to point out is not focusing on bringing your elbows together. .
To properly execute this movement you’re supposed to stretch and contract the chest. In order to get a proper contraction, you should bring your elbows together and not only your wrists because your wrist could be touching but the pec muscle is not shortening unless your elbows get closer together.

While you’re sitting there reading this caption, feel free to try this. Touch your wrist together like you’re doing a peck fly but keep your elbows flared out.

Now bring your elbows in and squeeze. I guarantee you will feel a better contraction! Check my story for a demonstration lol.

Anyways, let’s talk about the power of words/ self-talk.

Do you go into a workout thinking:
1️⃣“What’s my trainer going to do to me today?” 2️⃣Or maybe it’s something like “What’s my torture today?” 3️⃣Or do you leave saying “She/ He killed me!”
.
Take a second and think about the repeated impact of this kind of talk to yourself. There are quite a few implications to this, but they all come down to...
.
When you talk this way, you are speaking as an agent being acted upon, rather than someone empowering yourself through movement/ a challenge. Would you tell a friend those things? Likely not.
.
In every one of those statements, the power and accomplishment is on the part of the trainer or coach. Eek! And, as a coach I can tell you it is not my goal to have someone say that at the end of a session. I’ll tell you what I want to hear later on.
.
And what does that say to you over and over? Those phrases don’t sound like a person who is respected/ in control of their situation, even if your trainer is extremely respectful and listens to everything you request and caters to your goals! The power of words in this case is that you have a responsibility to give yourself credit where credit is due! You showed up, you worked hard, and you challenged yourself. And not every workout should leave you on the floor. Healthy recovery is extremely important.

What do I want to hear when you train?
✅ “Let’s do this.”
✅ “I’m nervous, but will do my best.”
✅ “I made it through that— I didn’t think I would, but I did.”
✅ “That was rough.”
✅ “I nailed that.”
✅”I’m feeling stronger every week.”
✅”That doesn’t feel good to my body, we need to back off on that.”
✅ “I’m finally getting it!!!”
✅ “I love x, y, and z.”
✅ “See you tomorrow.”

The phrases above sound like someone who has an internal locus of control for their fitness and wellbeing! Someone who speaks positively to themselves and sees them self for the badass they are, whether beginner, advanced, or anywhere in between. Power of words, folks ❤️ .

It's Sunday night! The perfect time to plan out the murder of your week!  Here are some of my routines/goals this week:

1.) Wake up at/before 0600 and make my bed - this helps to get the "snowball effect" on a productive day
2.) Get rough percentages of my 1RM squat, deadlift, bench, and ovh press
3.) Finish the current book @graces_platform and I are reading and possibly finish another book

If you haven't tried the bed making thing, TRY IT. It's a concept I heard from the NAVY SEAL William McRaven and it WORKS.

Today makes day one of this journey to better myself and find happiness again. && today has been INCREDIBLE. 
I find myself saying “no” to things I would normally say “yes” to, I feel more motivated than ever and I am determined to not give up this time. 
It’s amazing how just one step in the right direction towards a goal  can change your whole view and mindset on daily decisions.

I spent the day doing “fall things” with friends and had a blast! I was able to enjoy every single second of it without having a drink, a donut or pizza. 
I knew the whole time that I am working hard towards a goal and I’m doing this for myself. 
Now heading home to have my chicken and penne that I have waiting for me &&& then @halotopcreamery ice cream 🤗

MEDAL MONDAY
Yesterday I completed my first marathon @melbmara in 4h00m45s - it was bloody hard, but worth it. A lot of lessons learnt for next time! It was a hot day (I saw 4 different people being loaded into ambulances or being tended to on course) so I made sure I gulped down as much water as I could at the aid stations! It was a slow start with the crowds. I was honestly worried at 10km when both knees started to ache that I wouldn’t make it, but as soon as I reached 30km I knew I could do it. By 38km I was so ready for it to be over, it was hot, hilly, my hips were so stiff I felt like I couldn’t stride properly and my quads were starting to burn. Luckily no cramps and I didn’t need to take any walk breaks (apart from at aid stations to drink). The human body and mind are amazing things and I feel so lucky that I have been able to do this. Now that I know I can, I will definitely try and put in some proper training for my next run and see what I can achieve
