A breif story of how "Wombs of the World" Tanzania Doula Retreat came into existence.
For years my primary passions have boiled down to Travel, Yoga, & Babies.
@sacredborn & I met in our Doula training. We got tea together she shared how she had googled a ton of different birth centers around the world, asking if they might host doulas, seeking hands-on experience. The few that wrote back only accepted midwives, but thanks to the incredible Divine powers that be, the right woman responded. Gabby connected with a Canadian midwife who lives there & knew what doulas were!
I knew I would be going to Tanzania with Gabby before she even extended the invitation, and in less than two months we landed in Kilimanjaro & got to work!
When we arrived at the clinic, they didn't know who we were or what we would do, but they were excited to have us there.
We explained that we were not nurses or midwives. That no, we would no insert the catheter or catch the babies. We tried explaining we were there “for the mamas” ( / let be real, I was in it for the babies too). It wasn’t easy work. In fact, parts were so intense I am still processing. A three-day-old baby passed away on our first day, and the nurse casually asked me to stretch out her little body & wrap her up. My autopilot took over in order to not turn into a puddle of tears.
I thank the Heavens for Gabby! How we supported each other & complimented each other so well.
We knew this was something that we wanted to share with others, but we couldn’t conceptualize what that would look like.
We acknowledged our unique skill sets when it came to traveling, supporting women & cultural immersion. How neither one of us has any issue going with the flow- Hakkuna Matata.
And then, you lovelies started asking how we did it!
We are calling it a retreat because it's not voluntourism. It's an experience that will greatly deepen your doula practice, connect you with your tribe, & spread love & gentleness.
Women Serving Women
Since putting this out into the Universe, so many other dots started connecting. It's been beautiful.
