Despite popular opinion and their misleading name, recovery runs do not actually help the body recover faster. Many hold the belief that recovery runs help increase blood flow by clearing the legs of lactic acid and in turn making you ready for your next hard run. There is no proof that recovery runs increase blood flow to your legs, and it has already been proven that lactic acid levels return to normal within an hour of most workouts (not to mention the fact that lactic acid has not been found to cause muscle fatigue in the first place). However, recovery runs are vital for any training plan for a different reason: running volume. Running volume is the sheer amount of time and distance spent running, and it has been found that running efficiency is positively correlated with running volume and will continue to increase even after other fitness indicators (like VO2 max) have plateaued. A big reason for this is that neural connections between your brain and muscles are strengthened as running volume increases, meaning your running stride is fine-tuned to be more coordinated and efficient. Recovery runs help us to run a higher running volume than we would otherwise be able to if we ran hard for every run, increasing our running economy as a result! ✴️Long story short: recovery runs make you efficient 🙂
30 minute recovery run today in this 95 degree weather before my intervals tonight!
Is this Iceland or Switzerland?
In many ways the two countries are very similar as this picture could equally stem from both of them.. but I can't really fool you because you know I'm not yet back at running. Anyway, I might make another attempt in the future so be aware! ;)
Have a great evening!
