I’ve wanted to write a blog for a long time. So, here goes nothing.
I have challenged myself to write at least one blog a week. An InstaBlog. Maximum of 2200 characters. One photo. 30 minutes spent writing and editing.
My family is my life so you’ll be reading a lot about them. The good and the bad. The ups and the downs. I’m keeping it real so to speak.
My family: Dakota is a girl aged 11. Kayden is a boy aged 7. Ruby is a girl aged 6. Elliot is a girl (YES! A girl!) aged 4 months.
Samuel is my partner and he is 29. We’ve been together for four years. He’s ahhhhmazing! Great mind, great personality, great patience, great body.
I’m Joelene aged 32, born and bred Newcastle and probably here indefinitely. No, my parents did not like country music, and yes, people always sing “Jolene” to me when introduced. I like to pretend I don’t know why the heck they’re singing my name at me.
I come from a large family, but am only close to a few. I grew up in mostly in Lake Macquarie. My career background is in Community Services. I like to write, I love decent coffee and dislike talking about religion. Although, I will most likely write about this last topic for one of my blogs.
This InstaBlog is called “More Ups Than Downs” for a very specific reason. My daughters, Dakota and Ruby, both have Down syndrome. Stay tuned! Your FAQs will be answered in a blog coming soon.
We have a pretty ordinary life. We go to work and school, we have friends and family, we play sport on the weekends. Every day we follow a routine, we eat food, we shit and we shower. We go on family holidays. We have days when things go to plan and days when we all yell at each other and wish the day could start again.
The stigma around disability is changing… the world is becoming more inclusive. And I’ll be damned if my kids aren’t given every opportunity to participate and to contribute like anyone else.
Yes, I’m extremely passionate about social inclusion.
I hope this InstaBlog brings you some laughs, maybe some “Whoa!”s and you never know, maybe a tear or two. I’ve kept comments closed, but if you feel the need to write to me, go ahead and send a direct message.
Enjoy. Or don’t. It’s up to you!
This little one came from an animal hoarder’s home. We had just over two weeks together with plenty of ups and downs as she learned to function as the only dog. We are so happy she found her forever home last night! Sounds like she will be spoiled rotten. Sweet goodbye foster baby! Enjoy being THE one after being one of so many.
