Looking forward to reuniting next week with @bailoid @leestuartevansairlandandsea @pete_rees and the crew from our Mongolian adventure with @ratracehq
That was a truly amazing adventure playing test pilots running 100 miles across a frozen lake. Memories that will last a lifetime.
Next week we carry out a recce slightly closer to home, taking ourselves from the depths of a Welsh mine up and over mount Snowdon. It's going to be a pretty tough day!
#tbt back to our first time driving across the ice on the way to our start point before running back 100 miles over the lake below.
The Mongolians assured us it was perfectly safe as the 262m deep lake was not going to swallow us up as the ice was up to a metre thick.
Nonetheless, that doesn't stop your imagination keeping you on edge the as the ice changes appearance constantly and often looked just like water as if we were going in any second.
We later learned that sometimes cars do sink into the ice where it's thinner. And more importantly we had to stop several times to assess the foot-wide gaps in the ice where the plates had shifted.
We'd drive along to find a safer place to cross, we'd get out yo lighten the load, then the driver would take a run up and race over the black gorge to the other side.
Soooo love this epic video of by Tetris legend @pete_rees of the inaugural #mongol100 from @ratracehq
A select few went out on a recce to scope out the immense Lake Khusvgöl in Outer Mongolia.
The lake is 2 million years old, 85 miles long, 22 miles wide and 262m deep. We traversed the length, zig-zagging towards 100 miles over three days in temperatures dropping to -50°c.
The ice creaked, cracked and thundered around us, the vast expanse of varying ice never ceased to amaze, mile upon mile.
At night we camped on shore, eating around a fire to the sound of wolves howling in the treeline around us whilst our Mongolian support crew sang and laughed. A nomadic shaman visited to bless our trip and went on her own spiritual journey before our eyes, speaking in tongues, howling, growling and dancing ferociously as we watched in awe.
This truly was one adventure that gave countless experiences within the experience that will stay with us forever.
We proudly paved the way for a new 'bucket list' event from the Rat Race team, now open for 100 entrants to follow in March 2019.
Now it's your turn.
The squad. I miss the silence and the beauty of the ice. I miss looking after each other. I miss the simplicity. I miss the kindness. I think there has to be a better way to live this life. I am sitting in a nightclub in the middle of london just wishing it could always be as simple, kind and adventurous as it was that week. I have to make some changes. Because I can’t go on like this #mongol100#kindness#adventure
Up in the mountains there are tribes of nomadic Mongolians who still live in tee-pees with a lifestyle not far moved from the times of Genghis Khan.
It was a most rare and privileged experience to have one of them, a shaman visit us to bless our journey.
As we watched in awe, perched on the edge of the island in the middle of this giant lake, temperatures dropping to -50, it was a surreal experience.
This shaman went on her own journey before our eyes, it was haunting, lasting almost half an hour and left us gobsmacked. She sang, chanted, howled like a wolf, growled and spoke in tongues and spun so furiously she even launched herself into the fire, didn't flinch but the guys quickly pulled her out and put out her headpiece which was alight.
This wasn't just a street act, this is the real deal and was jaw dropping for is there in the moment.
This was something I won't forget any time soon.
We came, we saw, we shivered. Then we ran, we walked, we skated, we biked. We did it 🙌
The endless horizon of black ice and blue sky was hauntingly serene yet vicious beyond imagination. When it’s snowing on the inside of your jacket you know it’s cold ❄️
What an incredible land. Words don’t do the place or the challenge justice. This was Rat Racing at the absolute limit. 100 miles from top to bottom of a 2 million year old frozen lake, by any means. Immense tribute to the team who were our test pilots on this recce and to our fantastic Mongolian and Scottish Crew.
You’re up next. The Mongol 100 will be our first Bucket List Event to open. So we salute you Mongolia in bringing #Ratracers our coolest new event; coming very very soon...
Be the FIRST to know: http://bit.ly/RatRaceBucketList
On Thursday we had Burns Night Supper on a tiny island with a Scottish piper, haggis and a Shamen. It was amazing. Tonight we are guests of the Mongolian Government for their annual Burns Night dinner. What could possibly go wrong?! #mongolia#mongol100
I’m done. Today was 34miles of -30 hell and glory. But I’m finished. I just want to chill out and hang with my friends now but wanted you all to know that we are safe and well and completely shattered. All the updates when I am back! #mongol100
Rat Race Bucket List recce trip #27 ❄️ The team have landed at Lake Khovsgol, Outer Mongolia. It’s colder than Antarctica, the ice is a metre thick and black as night. There’s 100 miles to conquer by any means...foot, bike, skates or skis. Get ready for the #Mongol100#RatRacers . Launching soon. #adventure#travel#running#events#bucketlist
Simply stunning and other worldly.
This amazing lake is 22 miles wide, 85 miles long and 262m deep. Yet we've just driven 100km across it before starting the first leg of the recce tomorrow for the future Mongol 100, a bucket list event by @ratracehq
Really hoping I might get the chance to see this amazing statue of Genghis Khan on the way to attempt our 100 mile crossing of Lake Khuvsgul in Mongolia.
Yes that's actually real, no Photoshop gubbins. Wowsers!
Looks like the lake is almost ready for us.
In two weeks time I'll be part of a small select team attempting a 100 mile crossing of this lake in Mongolia. Temperatures will be as low as -50°c. I'm not sure yet how my body will manage but I aim to succeed and raise funds and awareness for @annashopeukcharity as I go.
All support makes a real difference to these young lives.
Thank you to all who have supported me so far.
Grab a copy of @espmagazine_pbo to read about my latest challenge in a bid to raise crucial funds and awareness for @annashopeukcharity and the young lives they help to transform.
In just three weeks I'll be landing in Outer Mongolia to attempt to run 100 miles across a frozen lake. My knees are already regretting this one, and the Christmas indulgences certainly didn't help my prep.
Please help make it worthwhile leaving the January sales and making a token donation to help reach my target for Anna's Hope and the children they help through their battles with brain cancer.
Our guy returned from Mongolia to brief us on the plans to cross the lake next month. It's all very real now!
To put it into perspective, imagine running across an ice rink stretching from Peterborough to London and it's really bloody cold!
Self management is crucial as the temperatures will be dangerously low around -40° (& down to -50°). The ice topped lake is up to 262m deep but they tell us the ice is nice and thick so let's hope they're right!
The surrounding 3,000m mountains will make this a stunning route, the lake will vary from blue smooth ice to snow-topped and bumpy ice making it tricky underfoot.
I'm looking forward to meeting the local nomadic tribes, spotting wolves and other wildlife, and having a nice warm Ger (hut/yurt/tent thingy) to return to each night.
When we get this right, it will soon become a new #ratrace event open for entries for those tempted to take this on.
I'm effectively one of the guinea pigs... wish me luck!
I received my latest order of products from @biosynergy & look who's in the accompanying Total NRG magazine with their #activeman range.
Oh hi there!
I'm proud to endorse the Bio-Synergy brand as their stuff is simply awesome.
I definitely feel the benefits of supplementing my diet and training on the lead up to big events and my imminent Mongolian adventure certainly counts as as one of them... https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mongolianicechallenge
Sorry @jamescracknell I've nicked your spot buddy. #bigfan#biosynergy#endurancerunner#proteinshake#supplements#mongol100#annashopeuk
