She was never meant to blend in. She was meant to stand out.
We recently gave the ol’ house a not-so-little makeover with a coat of bright white paint and suddenly, this 1967 babe came to life the way we always new she should. The thing is, when we moved in 7 years ago, we forced a neutral gray palette on her so that we’d update the aged exterior, but fall in line with the houses around us. You see, many are still occupied by original owners and we worried we’d be shaking things up too much if we went the direction we very well should of at the time. It was just a concrete colored paint job, but no landscape scheme or porch makeover would satisfy. The house blended into the neighborhood and consequently, our landscape blended right on into the house. Then, just like we did inside, we decided to paint our little abode bright white on the outside and in an instant, the garden sitting beside her high contrast walls was finally found. Funnily enough, the neighborhood feedback has been really positive, proof that all this time we were the ones holding us back.
Methinks there’s a broader lesson there. ✨

I have been an avid reader of the blog @cupofjo for many years, and I especially love their “Motherhood Around the World” series. The most recent post in the series was about parenting in France, and I can’t get it out of my mind. In fact, I’m nearly certain my family must be partially French because it resonates so closely with my own values and childhood. My favorite quote from the post - “I want my girls to enjoy things like swimming in the pool because it feels good for them, not because I’m on the sidelines cheering.”
I have really struggled with the idea of having children as I so rarely identify with any of the parenting styles I see around me - or anywhere for that matter. I had finally resorted to the fact that everyone else must be normal and I’m the weird one, but these motherhood series always give me a sense of calm and trust that while I may not choose to do anything like those around me, it doesn’t mean I’m alone. In fact, I was reading the blog post to Tyler and told him you know what? It seems as if these other countries have values while the US has standards. Or maybe it’s just me being weird again.

So grateful for green grass! Also thankful for the guys who worked all day in the 100 degree heat to lay it. I just found out temps here in North Texas are supposed to hit 108 this weekend. If you're looking for me, I'll most likely be barefoot in the grass playing in the sprinklers. 🌞
Designer life is about 20% all the pretty and 80% logistics. This week has been FULL of scheduling, overseeing, tracking, ordering, and dealing with issues. It’s only Tuesday and I’m worn out, but seeing this mudroom designed by @whittneyparkinson reminds me that all the “issues” result in something beautiful at the end!
On the blog today I shared the remodel of the main hallway of the Beach Cottage. I was so lucky to be able to work with some friends on their adorable beach cottage and I love everything about it. The framed prints are actually vintage Beach Boy album covers. The painting at the end of the hallway is mine! It is one of my favorites and I painted it last year.
It’s pretty awesome how God works to bring people into our lives, isn’t it? Like, through this app, for example ... who would have thought that I would meet two of the most like-minded, inspiring, supportive, authentic, encouraging, Super Mamas around, through IG?!?!? Not me. I couldn’t have even dreamed this one up - but, God, He knew ... and His plans so often far surpass our greatest hopes and expectations, don’t they? These two friends of mine and I got together for coffee recently and they just encouraged this little heart of mine so much! They shared with me their thoughts on how they believe this little old IG account of mine has potential to reach a larger audience. The truth is I’m super passionate about sharing thoughts and ideas on things like Faith & Family & Adoption, Home Building & Home Renovations, Design & Decor, Storage & Organization, Homeschool Education ... but I’m also I’m not an overly confident person 🙈 ... putting myself “out there” is ALWAYS something I second guess. I overthink, worry, analyze and practice self doubt FAR more than I like to admit ... I’m super sensitive and I fear judgement and even the thought of offending someone or having someone think poorly of me can send me into a downward spiral of anxious and insecure thoughts 🤦🏼♀️... but those aspects of who I am are not from God.🙅🏼♀️ Fear and feelings of not measuring up or not being good enough do not come from Him. At all. The driven, creative, organized, gratitude filled, compassionate and empathetic soul that I am - THAT’s from Him ❤️... and that’s what He has given to me to share. When we bought our 138 year old farmhouse a little over 3.5 years ago, we made the decision to intentionally give this home and land back to God to use as He wills ... it is all from Him after all (hence the name Cornerstone Farm - He is our Cornerstone! 🙏🏼) and I’ve decided to get more intentional and take the advice of my Hubby who has been encouraging me for years and these two amazing friends who have consistently chosen to be encouragers in my life over this past year - con’t in comments. #modernfarmhouse#farmhousestyle#farmhouse
Bookshelf styling is my happy place✨ Probably because it combines two of my favorite things in the in the entire world: organization and design. I just turn on some music and let my stress melt away🌿🌿
