The National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1935 in Warsaw as the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The team was created and led to 1939 by Grzegorz Fitelberg. After the war, in March 1945 the orchestra was reactivated in Katowice by Witold Rowicki. In 1947, Grzegorz Fitelberg became artistic director again and the band took the name of the Great Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Formerly the seat of the orchestra was located in the Center of Culture Katowice Krystyny Bochenek, at Plac Sejmu Śląskiego 2. From October 1, 2014, NOSPR has been operating in a new building at Wojciech Kilar Square 1 (intersection of Roździeńskiego Avenue and Olimpijska Street), at a cost of PLN 305 million, including an EU subsidy of PLN 146 million. The new headquarters has two concert halls: a large one for 1,800. places and intimate for 300 people. In 2014, they listened to 152 thousand concerts. 219 people. The building was erected in post-industrial areas, once owned by the "Katowice" Coal Mine. The author of the project is Tomasz Konior with the band, the acoustics of the Great Concert Hall were designed by Yasuhisa Toyota from Nagata Acoustics. Construction began in 2012 and ended in 2014. The general contractor was Warbud. The NOSPR building together with the new seat of the Silesian Museum and the International Congress Center form the "Culture Zone".
