The Mine Dump Run
Most people forget that Johannesburg is literally the city of gold, and to get gold they had to dig through tons of soil. With Joburg being home to the deepest mine in the world, Mponeng gold mine, ranged from between 2.4km to more than 3.9km below the surface.
Today's video was shot on one of the mine dumps in Nasrec (a surburb in Joburg). Over a period of 90 years (1886 to 1976) gold was being actively mined from underground workings, which left a trail of mine dumps stretching along the length of the Main Reef.
I enjoyed this run, the view was worth it. I did just under 4kms.
I wouldn't recommend running here because breathing the dust and metal particles within the sand isn't so good for your lungs, but overall it was a good experience. I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I enjoyed making it.

I have always loved birds. I’m not a binoculars and book kind of guy but their busy happiness always lifts my spirits. Photographing birds is another story. It is very difficult and I lack the equipment, patience and skills to be a good bird photographer. I photographed this bird as an antidote to endless oversaturated crappy boring head in the sand sunsets I see if Joburg. This is also Joburg I’m afraid. It is what we have done to our environment for over 100 years as we ripped gold from the ground. Shot on one of the remnants of a very old mine dump. Toxic and ugly. #downtown#birds#socialdocumentary#environment#mining#goldmine#minedump
