The Past and Letting Go
.

I recently watched footage of athletes training by attempting to run while strapped to large, heavy weights that trailed behind them. Not surprisingly, they were struggling, and their speed and ease of movement were greatly restricted.
.
Of course, once “freed” / “released” from their weighty burdens they rediscovered their natural speed, and indeed experienced higher levels of explosive speed. In the old days, people ran up sand dunes to achieve much the same effect, their feet dragging and sinking into the soft sand as their hearts pounded with the extra strain.
.
It makes sense that elite athletes might put themselves through such a gruelling training routine, as they are building strength and power that will aid them in achieving their goals.
.
HOWEVER, why would we, in our everyday lives, want to drag around the heavy weights of emotional baggage? Or drag our feet through the shifting sands of past memories, that pull us back however hard we strive to go forward? What goals does this possibly help us achieve?
.
We are not in training for life - this IS life, - this moment I am in NOW. It is where I need to be NOW. Cutting the ties, releasing and freeing oneself from the burdens of the past, has as powerful an impact upon our ability to make the most of the present, as does the release of the athlete from the weights holding her back.
.
Cut the ties and enjoy the burst of energy and strength for life, that comes with this release and freedom.

Mindfulness and the Past.
.

One certain thing about the past is that you cannot change it. The events and the emotions experienced have become part of your story. In everyone’s story some of the past, with varying degrees of intensity and time span, will have involved pain, fear, struggle, uncertainty, illness, loss and tragedy, to name but some of the difficulties life throws at people.
.
I often find myself in awe at the resilience of the human spirit, the will to survive, and the power of love to support.
.
The scars of the past can be actual, physical. They can be psychological and emotional. They can impact upon a person in so many different ways.
.
While the past cannot be changed, our responses to it, as it intrudes at unexpected and unwanted moments of the day, can be worked on.
.
Mindfulness can help to gently prise open a window to let in new light and fresh air, that little by little might reconfigure the impact of painful experiences and memories, lessening the power of these to take a person back to dark places.
.
It is not a quick fix, but rather a slow and gentle process of soothing the old with the balm of the present. There is much about life that we will never understand. If we can look at the past through a present lens of Kindness, Light and Fresh Air, healing and acceptance, forgiveness and compassion, hope and gratitude, may over time, lighten those burdens AND maybe, even set one free from them. .

Delighting or Derailing
.
William Shakespeare in his early Sonnets (numbers 1 to 17) urged the young to “share” (as in procreate) their beauty right now; because they would not have it for very long. Share it at its peak, its PERFECTION, because the pock marks and other ravishes of time claim even the fairest. This was his eloquent mantra. He enjoyed detailing many of the assaults upon physical beauty that could be expected.
.
Ironically, while so much has changed since Will’s day - especially when it comes to one’s breath, teeth, skin, hair, fertility and life expectancy - the same obsession with physical perfection reigns supreme. A type of derailing in the detail, rather than delighting.
.
Perfection in nature, if it comes, comes fleetingly and always as part of the cycle of change - of growth and decay, living and dying. Nature’s beauty is never static. Nature does not obsess about perfection, She gets on with being the best she can be, within whatever conditions she finds herself. In times of abundance, her flowering is magnificent, and in times of depletion and deprivation, her struggle for life itself is magnificent.
.
Today, I recommend focussing upon the IMPERFECTIONS of Nature. They do not detract from her beauty at all, they simply remind us that obsessions with the perfect are misguided, and that we should learn lessons of self-compassion and acceptance, gratitude for abundance when it comes, and gratitude for the power to struggle on when times are tougher. .

Delight in the Detail Again!
.
The last several posts have deliberately used the word DELIGHT. I’ve been encouraging the reader to enjoy the sensory details that abound in every moment of the day.
.
Any deliberate attempt to engage more deeply, more consciously, with the senses in a particular moment or situation contributes to building a Mindful Awareness Mindset.
.
The benefits of this are profound, especially as the growing capacity for non-judgemental experience through the senses, finds its way into a person’s interactions and relationships with others.
.
For example, as skills for listening are honed, we hear much more than the voice of the person speaking. We become more adept at recognising tone, timbre and emotion. If the person is before you, and you are observing their facial and other movements, their gestures; being truly present before them, seeing and hearing in depth, brings true connection, empathy, acceptance.
.
Ultimately, we want this Mindful Awareness Mindset to be our DEFAULT - our normal, natural, habitual way of interacting with the world, others and ourselves. We want delighting in the detail, becoming skilful in experiencing in the present moment, without judgement, with all its positive energy, to be an intrinsic element of the mindset we bring to daily living.
.
Simply engaging more fully, more curiously, more consciously with the senses, WILL impact upon the default pathways of the brain, promoting positive energy and helping a Mindful Awareness Mindset to flourish. Give the senses a good workout whenever you can. As little as 30 seconds per sense per day - two and a half minutes! - delightful!

Curious Detail .
.

Delighting in the Detail builds the wonderful quality of CURIOUSITY, an eagerness to discover through close engagement. .

Curiousity is a marvellous source of positive energy. It entices, charms and pleases. It rewards those who embrace it with an ever broadening fascination and delight in all that is around them.
.
The curious are explorers, delving into mysteries, being awed by the wonders of the world in which they live. Children are constantly curious because so much is new to them. Delighting in the detail helps foster the open-mindedness that is such an important aspect of curiousity.
.
Another reason why curiousity promotes so much positive energy is because it suspends judgement in favour of observation, wondering and thinking. It feeds the imagination, creating play time for the brain. Of course, it also leads to serious thinking and inventiveness, an insight that led Albert Einstein to rate curiousity and imagination as the most important of our cognitive traits.
.

Are you curious as to why Wendy chose to render only half of this highly detailed door knocker? I am. And is there enough detail within it for your imagination to supply the rest?
.

Curiousity and Mindfulness go hand in hand, each strengthening and delighting in the other. .

Delight in the Detail .
.
An enjoyable way to Delight in the Detail is to EXPAND the LANGUAGE we use to name and describe what we are experiencing through the senses.
.
All languages have wonderful ways of classifying and describing sounds, tastes, sights, smells, touches and thoughts. An internet search for ‘language of the senses’ supplies hundreds of words that can bring greater precision and detail to how one describes what she or he is experiencing. Onomatopoeic words (meaning much as they sound - cackle, swallow, rattle, giggle, wriggle ...), are fun to use and add a sense of delight and playfulness to the moment.
.
This focus on language also helps to build the capacity to distinguish between sensations more effectively, as well as adding to the richness and delight found in the particular.
.
Poets also teach us the joy of language and open up the world of description. There is a poet inside each of us, and the combination of close attention to the experience of the NOW, and the playing (or wrestling) with language to capture an experience in its rich uniqueness is definitely Mindfulness in action.
.
I’ve been entertained by the morning magpies as I write this. They are warblers. My all time favourite book, The Dictionary of Etymology, tells me that this means they “sing with trills and quavers, or melodious turns.” Now I need to look up ‘trills’ and ‘quavers’ to expand my enjoyment even more! .

Delight in the Detail
.

When it comes to delighting in the detail, we have the marvellous gift of our five senses (some say more) through which we principally experience the world. .
.
Yet it is very easy to take them for granted and to let the sensitivity of the senses lapse through superficial engagement with them.
.

They are more complex realities than our simple naming of them suggests AND what they offer us by way of experiencing the world, is much richer and more detailed than we tend to give credit for.
.

Mindfulness, wisely, recommends that we exercise the senses, deliberately focus on them both individually and in concert with each other. While the ‘use it or lose it’ catchphrase may be overstating the situation, we do need to keep the senses’ myriad pathways to the brain, open and busy.
.

Michael J Gelb in his book How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: 7 Steps to Genius Every Day, highlighted Leonardo’s utter commitment to sharpening and honouring the senses. Gelb helped bring the following quote from the great man into prominence:
. “An average human,
looks without seeing;
hears without listening;
touches without feeling;
eats without awareness of taste;
moves without physical awareness;
inhales without awareness of odour or fragrance; and talks without thinking.”
.

If you have a ‘sense’ that one (or more) of your senses is weaker than the others, or perhaps under utilised ..... you know what to do .... focus in on the particular, for the benefit of the whole, in this case, YOU!

The Richness Of Knowing in Detail .

Picture in your mind a ‘CONNOISSEUR’.
What is he or she doing? .
Appreciating. .

It does not matter what it is - wine, cheese, rare books, art, camellias, diamonds ...... sculptured madonnas on the outside walls of houses .... .

A connoisseur is someone who knows and appreciates their subject so well that they can discern the subtle variations that either add to or detract from the greatness of THIS particular example, the one before them RIGHT NOW. .

The richness is in the detail. You are not a connoisseur if you tried something once. It takes time, attention, knowledge, experience. .

You have to stop and DWELL, to be present to the subject, to recognise, absorb and celebrate its detail. .

It’s the close attention to the particular that over time, makes the connoisseur; infusing them with a way of seeing and experiencing that comes to know the true nature and beauty of things. .

Mindfulness seeks to make us connoisseurs of daily life, with one important exception. Unlike professional connoisseurs who are judging and evaluating, accepting or rejecting; Mindfulness encourages the observing and recognising for its own sake. Very often, one’s close attention leads to a richer enjoyment and appreciation. Or it might alert one to step back, leave alone or let go. Either way, the focussed attention is bringing clarity and greater knowledge. It is fine tuning our awareness, so that we are more purposefully moving through the day, detail by detail, moment by moment. .

Connoisseuring (I may have invented a new word!) without the judgement. .

Delight in the Detail .

Mindfulness guru John Kabat-Zinn offers this definition: “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose in the present moment, and non-judgementally.”
.
My next few posts will take up aspects of this simple, yet profound definition.
.
To Delight in the Detail is a wonderful way to ‘pay attention in a particular way’.
.
‘Detail’ is a very old word, going back to the early 1600’s. It has French and Latin origins, meaning back then ‘to cut into pieces’. Over time, ‘detail’ came to denote the particular pieces, or as in our age, the aspects or elements that make up the whole.
.
Delighting in the Detail is a call to focus in upon the individual, distinctive richness of the part (icular), once the whole has one’s attention.
.
The lovely image provided today by Wendy is a close examination of a small section of an ordinary household door in Qala, Gozo. It’s intricate, ornate working adds much to the overall beauty of the door and is definitely worthy of the attention rendered to it in this abstracted, painterly representation.

AND

Delighting in the Detail is possible for EVERYTHING, across all of our SENSES, and our imaginative, creative, thinking capacities.
.
So today, stop and consider the detail of something AND be aware that this is Mindfulness in action - grounding yourself in the present moment - delighting in a fragment or aspect that contributes uniquely to the greater experience of the whole. .

A simple acrostic recipe for mindfully preparing for sleep.
S: Sit in Silence, in dimmed lighting.
.
L: Listen to the Breath. Lengthen the Breath.
.
E: Ease your way out of the day. Gently, let go.
.
E: Enter your own inner core. Be at home within yourself.
.
P: Peacefully put aside the thoughts and emotions of the day. Press the pause button on thinking about tomorrow.
.
And here are some recommended garnishes to go with the recipe: .
- a favourite chair and / or space;
- a straight back to aid deep breathing;
- a heart shaped object that speaks of gratitude, compassion and love;
- a liberal sprinkling of smiles (they induce relaxation and sweet dreams).
.
AND
.
May Sleep come to you tonight, a sweet balm, so soothing;
the soul’s delight and the body’s renewing. .

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

When the time for something critical to us approaches, in example an interview, or a test, and so on, we are usually quite anxious. At the same time, we seem to think deeply that the more we think about it, the more likely we are going to go well.

But we often neglect to take into account that it is most important to have a clear mind at that time. So how could we differentiate our approach by making our lives easier as well us more efficient and authentic?

Traveling Mindfulness
A little more about Sleep .

So much NECESSARY good is happening while we sleep. We see it so easily, so readily, when watching an infant sleep. It is one of life’s great pleasures to cradle a sleeping infant. The vitalness of the sleep, its fundamental necessity and goodness is palpable.
It is no wonder that one of the most joyous responses a person can make to the question:
“How did you sleep?”
is
“Like a baby.”
.
Take some time today to remember your experiences of babies sleeping well. Recall your experiences of cradling a sleeping child in your arms.
Recall the awe, the wonder, the love. Sense again, the peacefulness, the softness of being that envelopes the child asleep.
.
You were cradled in sleep as well. Loving eyes gazed in awe at the sacred mystery of life, that was pulsing so purposefully, so wondrously, as you lay in the cradle of sleep.
.
A little mindful awe and wonder, and gratitude, for all that Sleep has accomplished within you, might make a very fine nightcap tonight.

Traveling Mindfulness
Sacred Sleep .
I have been thinking about the relationship between Mindfulness and Sleep. Sleep is crucial, and is an aspect of life worthy of a lot more mindful attention.
.
There are many soothing and very effective meditations available to help people prepare well for sleep. Like most things, the benefits come from their frequent use, rather than as one-offs, or being limited to times of stress. It is the HABIT, the building of a routine or ritual around preparing for sleep that ultimately has the greatest impact.
.
I really like the word RITUAL when considering the practices that might become or which are, a Mindful preparation for sleep. That’s because SLEEP is SACRED, and all through human history rituals have been developed to respond to the Sacred.
.
Human beings were never meant to be in control 24/7. Sleeping is fundamentally constitutive of who we are. Yet, as necessary as it may be, we cannot make ourselves do it. We cannot “will” ourselves to sleep.
.
We FALL asleep, we let go. We surrender ourselves into the arms of sleep, into that sacred realm where the conscious controlling of mind, body and emotions is no longer possible. There is an extraordinary mystery to Sleep. A Mindful approach helps place one at the threshold of this mystery, preparing one for the free fall into this wondrous voyage of discovery, rejuvenation and integration.
.
The next few posts will explore some elements of the relationship between Mindfulness and Sleep. So until next time, Bonne nuit et fait de beaux reves. .

Travelling Mindfulness
Rousing Roosters
.
I’ve been listening to the village roosters. By the time I wake they have been at it for a couple of hours already. It is the harsher sound of cars in the narrow street outside our bedroom window that I first become aware of.
.
Yet it is the roosters’ call that acts as the invitation to begin the day mindfully.
.
I am thankful for their persistence well into the morning, their uncanny realisation that waking up can be a slow process. .
The association of particular sounds and times, can be an invitation to a few quiet, focussed moments of mindful orientation and gratitude. The midday Angelus bell that still rings out in so many of these sweet villages is another example of this wonderful capacity for special sounds to call us to mindful and / or prayerful moments.
