Being a mom gives you the opportunity to teach your children how to care for their body both inside and out.

Being a mom gives you such a clear WHY.

My oldest came home from school the other day and said, we get to do burpees at school now momma and guess what?! I already knew how to do them!!!”

My oldest said to my niece who kept saying she couldn't ride the bike, ”Yes you can do it! You can do anything you set your mind too!”
She listened and successfully rode the bike. .
What if I put my growth on hold?

What if instead, I paused my goals?

I possibly wouldn't  have these moments to cherish. .
Because the those moments are a result of him watching me and listening to me. .

You've labelled yourself a binge eater and notice that you tell yourself you shouldn't eat certain things (but do anyways).

How do you start to live in that strength and let go of the weakness?

Let go of the stories and thoughts that aren't serving you?

Well, you've already taken the first step by declaring that something needs to shift, so congratulations!🎉

But what you do next is crucial to making a change that will allow you to live a happier and more fulfilled life.

1⃣ Slow down and pay attention to those thoughts & stories. Just because they are your thoughts, does not make them true and does not mean you need to believe them. Practice noticing the negative self-talk, pausing, and changing the dialogue to something positive. For example, you can change “I really need to lose weight.” to “My body is healthy and happy.”

2⃣ Take action. Don’t let yourself continue to struggle alone. Find an accountability partner or someone to help you stay on track and implement actionable steps that you can take on a daily basis to help you stop struggling.

3⃣ Fall in love with yourself again. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone you love. We spend so much time mentally and emotionally abusing ourselves when we wouldn’t even do these things to other people. Do you go up to others and tell them they look fat?

Went to a birthday party and saw a mutual friend who said: whoa it’s so great to see you in public! A rare sighting indeed. That night I was talking to a guy about new things God is doing not just in individuals—but in “community” he said. I was like: “well I was going to say family.” And it occurred to me that healthy connection for individuals should first look like family. Then Families make communities. Communities create the great nations of the earth.  Communities structured by institutions around a sliver of human reality— a cause or pursuit—will never create a dynamic spectrum wide enough for the ‘unwanted’ unborn, the elderly, our children, and the disabled. Family is the context where a persons most dynamic and creative connective ability is cultivated by their required response to the true needs of the diverse people around them. Kelli Foulkrod is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher, mother and groundbreaker for a new therapeutic model. Her thoughts on how her yoga education has given her insight into the what's lacking in the current therapeutic model ~

My training as a yoga teacher was a catalyst for waking up to the oppressive and disempowering nature of mainstream mental health treatments.  Most of modern psychotherapy and psychiatry blatantly disregard the roles that the body, Spirit and Soul play on mental health.  If we view the mind in this compartmentalized way, we detach the individual from their sources of power, essence, and energy.  Yoga invites people back into their body, instead of psychoanalyzing the ego, and re-engages the individual with the true nature of their being. 
The current paradigm conditions us to seek healing outside of ourselves.  This sends us on a search to find the expert who has all the answers and authority over our healing process, which is a recipe for disconnecting intuition and disowning personal sovereignty.  Instead of relying on and expecting a therapist to do the healing for you, yoga teaches us that healing is an inside job and you are the only one who can embody yourself at a soul level.  A return to embodiment shines the light of awareness on the aspects of the self that are out of balance.  Yoga and meditation have taught me over and over again that Life unfolding and my present awareness are my most supportive therapist and spiritual teacher.

For the first time in 2 months, I felt like I was my own person again (and on the path to becoming a better one too because #yoga 🧘🏼‍♀️) and not just a #mom. 🤭 WHAAAT?! Sounds outrageous. I know.

Becoming a mother is the best thing that happened to me and I love every minute of it except for being extremely tired and sleep-deprived (can you blame?!) 🤷🏼‍♀️ Becoming a mom also means that the entire world - physical, emotional and mental - changes completely. Rebalancing is in order. A new mom needs a new relationship with her new #postpartum body, spirit and mind.

After spending a couple hours away from my baby and having some “me time”, I can give so much more to him. So much more love, peace, life energy. ❤️ Yes, even a minute away feels like a century and I won’t go into #momguilt here (deserves a separate post). The point of the story is that #selfcare is important. Especially when you have others to take care of. ⠀

This week on the blog I have been focusing on the #autonomic nervous system, a crucial way that the body maintains #balance. The aim of the autonomic nervous system is to maintain homeostasis of internal organs, glands and small muscles to coordinate automatic physiologic processes which maintain many important functions within the body. The autonomic nervous system uses many internal automatic regulators that act like thermostats to maintain a fairly steady state in the inner processes of the body.  There are three main components of the efferent/outward acting limbs of the ANS: sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric. Overall, the divisions of the autonomic nervous system work together to ensure that the body responds appropriately to different situations. When the autonomic nervous system is working correctly, there is a balance between these branches, and formal functioning of the digestion, cardiovascular, respiratory and hormonal systems can occur. When this balance is not working properly, the inner world of the body is not able to maintain homeostasis or normal responses to demands and dysautonomia can result. 2.5 years of hard work in between those two pictures, and I am so, so proud and happy with the changes I can see here! And even more important than the physical changes are the internal ones - no crazy cravings, spending hours scrolling through IG food pictures, and totally pigging our after the show.⠀

They key to improvement for me was really figuring out what works for me and my lifestyle, not just during the 12 or 16 weeks of prep but in my everyday life. Because if you really want to improve, put on muscle, be successful as a competitor, and do all that naturally, in a healthy way, and without going through extremes you have to be in it for the long run. This is not a 3-months kind of thing. It’s a lifestyle. ⠀
