Here is an excerpt from Dr. Harcourt’s new book coming soon! We love how he speaks with such passion and clarity on Migraine and what patients go through in the current medical model for migraine treatment. There is a better way and we can’t wait for everyone to fully understand that. Enjoy!
. “What really pushed me over the edge, though, was the constant and consistent story that I would hear from people from all over the world. Whether they were in the U.S., Canada, Iceland, Fiji, or Lebanon, they all dealt with the same progression of migraine that leads to the same progression of treatment. First, they weren’t sure if they had migraines or not. Next, they were given some type over-the-counter medication. Then, as the migraines become more frequent, they were given abortive medications, such as Triptans, to stop the headache process before the migraine could develop. Then, when the migraines became too frequent so that they couldn’t have any more Triptans, they were given Botox or nerve ablation surgery or any number of other methods. When they continued to get worse, they were basically told “sorry, there’s nothing else we can do”.
I want to highlight the universality of this crisis because this isn’t one bad doctor that was just brushing them off or not listening or even trying. Everything that was thrown at them was based on the current and accepted understanding of treating migraine, which has led to massive suffering for these people over the decades. All of the treatments were addressing the end result of migraine, not the migraine itself.”
Is anyone else finding themselves shouting in agreement?! This book is going to change migraine treatment as we know it forever. We are so excited to share more with you soon! Stay tuned!
Dear Sister (@hannahshewanstevens)
I thought I was finally getting things back under control but my body chose this week to remind me that preventatives aren't a magic fix!
It seems I did 'too much' on Monday and I've been paying for it since with fatigue, nightmares, and migraines!
I just want to be able to go to a small social event without it wrecking me for the rest of the week!
My head, neck and back are killing me so I'm about to go to bed again having done nothing I wanted to do after work today!
Arghhhhghnfjdidaaaaaaa!!! I keep reminding myself that I'm doing much better than I was back in March-June but I still feel like my life is being stolen. No longer so much of the time I need to keep my job, but the time around work where I get to do the actual living! :( Fingers crossed the rest of the week improves. I hope your week is going better than mine!

Hey y'all! I just wanted to take a moment to talk about a product/company and a plant that I wholly believe in. 🌱
Firstly, if you are unaware, we all have a beautiful endocannabinoid system within us. It regulates many processes, both cognitive & physical. Certain ailments, such as migraines, are known to be endocannabinoid deficiencies. This means they are typically extremely difficult to treat, and are often lifelong struggles. .
I, personally, have suffered from chronic migraines since I was 9 years old. My first migraine actually happened at my first concert (*NSYNC, because... Ya know 🤷♀️). Luckily, my mom was well versed and knew exactly what to do. Unfortunately, my treatment process over the years has been nothing short of a "pull your hair out" frustrating endeavor. From countless intense prescription medications & doctor shoulder shrugs, to expensive massage/acupuncture/chiropractor/etc. visits, nothing really helped long term. Any preventative medications made absolutely no difference in frequency or intensity, and "rescue" meds only worked 50% (and that's being generous). Basically, I was stuck having 4-5 full-blown migraines A WEEK, with little to assurance of that ever really changing. .
Enter, Cannabis. So, I've been using this sacred plant for years to not only treat my migraines, but also chronic pain (due to a lack of curvature in my neck), PTSD, severe anxiety & depression. But I recently started to notice a wonderful and drastic difference in my quality of life. I believe this is thanks to @kingomharvestcbd from @carolinahempcompany 💚 This CBD oil is a bit different from the rest. They offer a "whole spectrum hemp extract," unlike a lot of isolate-based products I've tried over the years. When using a whole spectrum product, you are getting every element of the hemp flower, the way Mother Nature intended. This in turn provides homeostasis to the endocannabinoid system, balancing out what might be out of whack. .
I have reduced my migraines from 4-5x a week down to ONCE A MONTH. And when they do come, they are less intense & don't last nearly as long. My panic attacks, PTSD triggers and depressive episodes (cont. below)
When you begin your journey to becoming migraine and headache free, you have to start with the ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is your driving force and will help you push through when times get tough.
The ‘how’ in the journey is not to be considered in the process. Just understand that you want to get from point A to point B but you don’t know how you are going to get there right now, but that’s ok. That’s the way it’s meant to be.
When you try to figure out the ‘how’ you sabotage the process, you try to force solutions that you think will fit, you close yourself off to opportunities and you create anxiety, stress and pain in the process.
Let go of the ‘how’ and take each step at a time. When you release resistance to the ‘how’, your journey can truly begin to unfold.
Are you currently stuck in trying to find out the ‘how’?
First Post! I figured I would start with what seems like a simple question but I have learned isn’t actually all that simple. What is a migraine?
Not everyone agrees about all the details.
From my research, some experts think that a migraine occurs starting from activity in the hypothalamus sometimes due to migraine triggers and the activity in the hypothalamus is also responsible for non pain systmptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light. Some others think that the activation of the sympathetic nervous system as a result of the migraine pain is what causes the sensitivity to light, nausea etc.
What they seem to all agree on is that nerve cells in the brain stem get activated and they activate other nerves (often nerves that only supply one side which is why migraines are often one sided) the nerves release neuropeptides which then basically aggravate blood vessels around your head (they become swollen and inflamed and constrict). The swollen blood vessels then stimulate pain receptors which is why you feel so much pain.
When the migraine involves Aura, neurologists often think that is due to the blood vessels constricting or due to electrical disturbance of brain cells.
P.S. I think the best explanation of what a migraine is, I found in David Buchholz’s book “Heal your Headache” which is where this image came from.
Today someone emailed me “how do I convince my wife that she doesn’t have a migraine every time she just has a bad headache and wants to get out of working?” I was dumbfounded by his heartless tone and sad that we can’t take each other at our word. 🤦♀️ This picture is a repost from @thespiritsage via @migraineinspiredart , which you should def check out for more creative images! #migraineawareness
Day 11: Pattern
Last night I got a migraine. This is what it looks like for me when they happen. Specifically when I look myself in the mirror. Nothing is in focus or are double and there is a swirly line that moves across my vision. They are more than just a headache and cannot be fixed by drinking more water. Lucky I don't get them nearly has much as I did when I was younger, then it was like 3 times a week! Anyway storytime over.

Social media is too fake, so here’s what my life really looks like.
I have been struggling so much with my migraines the last few years. This is what I look like when I’m not faking it. The recent approval of new meds offered hope, but I’m still not getting any relief. It is getting so hard to stay positive, but fighting is the only option. (I’m not looking for tips or advice, just sharing a REAL piece of life.) #MigraineAwareness#Reality#MoveAgainstMigraine#MigrainesSuck#Aimovig
Imagine living in a world knowing that at any moment you could be overcome by pain, with seemingly little reason or pattern. Where everyday you play a guessing game of how you will feel tomorrow. Or where you constantly let people down, and have to reply as a 'maybe' to most invitations as you're not sure yet how you're going feel that day.
That's how it is for people with chronic conditions.
It's just so frustrating, living in this unsettled world of 'will I, won't I?'. It's like having the rug pulled under us every. single. day. We don't control our body, our body controls us. It constantly surprises us, delights us, lets us down. There's few prolonged episodes of peace.
And with the added impact of being an invisible condition, it makes it so much harder to 'convince' people this is our reality. All we really want, is for 'normal' people to appreciate and live life to the full every day that they are well, because they are so fortunate and don't even know it #rantover#invisibleillness#chronicillness#migraine#chronicmigraine#spoonie#spoonieproblems#migrainewarrior#chronicpain#headache#healthyliving#health#migraineawareness#help#uncertainty

Botox update. Ive had 5 rounds. Some months are better than others. I can 100% say Botox does miracle wonders for two months - at least - until it starts wearing off. Minus the last week I spent 10 weeks straight going from one gruelling migraine to the other to the point where I couldn’t tell anymore where they start and ended. You have to wait a minimum three months before you can have another Botox injection and I had to do just that. Wait. Every migraine has extremely different and painful side effects. I finally have felt relief after finally being able to get Botox again. For some reason it only lasted one month last round. The round before that I didn’t have a single migraine in three months. The hope is that the Botox effects will eventually last longer and maybe I can make it to 6 months without having a migraine and another Botox round. Everyone asks how I do it? And I tell them that the world doesn’t stop for me, so I have to keep on for myself and everyone else in my life.. on a side note, Botox is ruininnnng my effect to make any sort of facial expressions with my eyebrows 😂
This last weekend was 🤯🥴😩. I forgot to take my medication Friday night. All Saturday, I felt “hungover.” I realized half way through the day what I’d done. I decided to attempt to continue with my weekend plans, which was to meet up with my brother and SIL at Disneyland for an early Christmas dinner, then a Disneyland day with our good friends from Utah on Sunday. On the way up, I started to feel a migraine come on from the break lights. I took an imitrex, and felt a little better. I still couldn’t shake the nausea/hungover feeling. I was excited for dinner, and got things that were basic and easily digestible. Well, halfway through dinner, I felt so sick. Dizzy, more nauseated, and the feeling I needed to 🤮. I ran to the bathroom, but nothing. I got back to the table, and the spinning began again. I ran outside the restaurant, and then had to find a bush. I ended up projectile 🤮 for about an hour or more. Disney security was wonderful and got me a wheelchair. We were trying to get me home, when the valet informed us they’d lost the car. Then they found they car, and the battery was dead. By this point, I’d taken over a gift bag for my 🤮. Needless to say, I didn’t make it to Disneyland Sunday. And I slept all day yesterday thanks to phenegran. I still feel nauseated, but no vomiting since Saturday. I’ve traded my morning coffee for ginger tea. And amidst me being so sad for feeling like I ruined dinner and missing out on visiting friends, this little note popped up on my tea. People who love are happy. 💗🙏🏻💗 I’m grateful for my boyfriend for remaining calm in the midst of a terrible situation, and my bro and SIL for doing everything they could to take care of me, too. •
Friends with migraines, this post is for you!
I suffered with migraines since junior high! I'm talking knock me out, put me in a dark room, bedridden for hours migraines.
For me, it was orbital migraines where I had blindness in one eye. Brain fog where my vision would go hazy, my speech was limited, & my right arm always went numb. Then it was only minutes before the pounding headache would begin. 🔹
I was seeing a neurologist, popping Imitrex (statin drug) like it was candy, & still suffered a couple migraines/month! It was debilitating. 🔹
Fast forward to today! I’ve been

Migraines don't care what day it is or if I actually wanted to sleep last night or what my plans were today. All are at the mercy of the incredible pain behind my eye that will last for days, regardless of what I do to try to make it go away. Do you know someone who suffers from migraines? Understand that they are in immense pain even if they don't look like it. Believe them. Be patient with them. And pray for them. #chronicpain#migraineawareness#migrainessuck#bepatient
London Bound ✨ Today is a landmark day in my chronic migraine illness. I’m on my way into London to start a new treatment that really is the only answer left for me since I’ve tried so many others without success. It’s the new groundbreaking treatment for migraine, it has been rolled out in #America earlier this year and since Sept 18 it has become available in the UK privately, except I’m not going privately for this treatment and again I praise the #nhs Although it’s not widely available on the Nhs yet, still yet to pass #niceguidelines (hopefully by Summer 19) I am one of the “lucky” fuckers I guess that through my clinic I am able as a patient to obtain this drug for free (through strict criteria) for three years in direction from my clinic and the manufacturer itself. I’m feeling excited but also terrified that it might not work? Here’s hoping for a huge reduction in migraines per month. 🤞N.B. I should also say that if you were to obtain this drug privately you are looking at c.£500 for the lower dose (1 inj per month) or £1K for the double dose PER MONTH! We need to get this drug available on the NHS! .
I’ve got the trusty leopard print on for a touch of good luck today! ✨🌟💖
Managing migraine doesn’t have to be all about medication. Effective non-pharmaceutical treatment is available. Medications can often leave unpleasant side effects or stop working over time. What has been your experience with medications?
Do you have a faith or spiritual practice? If so, do you feel it helps you navigate this journey in times of uncertainty? Does it give you comfort in times of pain and suffering?
We would love to know how your faith affects your health and how it helps you on your healing journey...
Welcome to my life AND my instagram. This photo pretty much sums it up.. haven't slept more than 9 hours in the past 3 days (2 hours last night). Get ready for bed and BAM migraine and bowels on fire, couldn't find a flannel so a pair of my partners clean underwear had to serve as a cold press.. i am running behind on this venture but promise more posts, tips and videos will actually be coming out! #migraine#ibs#chronicpain#chronicillness#migraineawareness#migrainesufferer 100
Structure determines function is a basic principle of physiology. The upper neck is a very mobile joint which also makes it vulnerable to injury. With its relationship to the brain and spinal cord, as well as the fluid dynamics being directly affected by this system, it’s no wonder that it can affect #migraines and #headaches !
