This is all that remains of El Templo Mayor in downtown Mexico City. This pyramid base once stood at the center of the floating city of Tenotchtitlan. Despite the fact that the Aztecs were the most well-documented precolumbian society in Mesoamerica, they were themselves latecomers to the area, sweeping into central Mexico in the 1300s and 1400s.

From San Jose we went to small village where we found super creepy airbnb with so much dirt (yep cockroaches were there too) that I almost run away in a second. But as some wise guy said - life starts out of your comfort zone. (I still doubt that he was mentally in shape) 💁🏽‍♀️ We actually stayed just because of this terrase and magical views 💚and owners were old supercute couple so we couldn’t tell them that their apartment is totall gross 😄 so far I love people here the most, everybody is smiling, greeting and helpful 🤩❤️

I recently visited Chambersburg, PA, a small Appalachian city with a Southern feel. And learned that my favorite political writer, David Brooks, once profiled it as a rural American microcosm. One thing that struck both him and I is that Chambersburg isn't poor. It has lower incomes than the national median, but everything's cheaper. Homes and streets are clean/safe. People drive big trucks and eat at semi-upscale chains. I went to a high school football game that night to find 4K had come out to see the team, and a large cheerleading squad and marching band. The next morning, this festival drew thousands more. Which is to say: people there weren't destitute. Nor is the town, which has no municipal debt. And there are thousands of towns nationwide like Chambersburg...That's why I'm amused by all these "Rome is burning" media narratives that brand America as divided, unequal, bankrupt and miserable. I'd counter that people in America are mostly okay, and that reports to the contrary are often made to serve political agendas. _________________________________________ #chambersburgpa #chambersburgpennsylvania #ruralpennsylvania #southernpennsylvania #streetfestival #exploringpennsylvania #travelingpennsylvania #ruralamerica #middleamerica #rurallife #davidbrooks #sociology #davidbrooksnyt #appalachia #pennsylvaniaappalachiantrail

This is the Castillo at Tulum in eastern Yucatan. This walled city and port thrived at the very end of the postclassic, during the 1200s-1400s. Tulum continued to function as a major Maya city even seventy years after the arrival of the Spanish.

This is a sculpture of Kukulkan (the feathered serpent god of the Maya) at Chichen's ball court. Like the Romans and Greeks, the Maya shared many of central Mexico's gods. The Aztects called this same deity Quetzacoyatl.

The Temple of the Warriors at Chichen is a late Maya postclassic copy of a Toltec structure in Tula, Mexico. The late postclassic Maya cities in the arid, northern part of the Yucatan, tend to show more toltec-influenced features in their architecture.

This is the plaza of the Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan. When the Spanish arrived in central Mexico in 1519, the native Nahuatl Aztec civilization ruled this region. Teotihuacan is more than a thousand years older, and may have been the largest city in the world at the time of it's zenith.

These are the ruins of apartment complexes at Teotihuacan, the largest pyramid site in the New World. This city grew up and collapsed after a zenith of about four hundred years. The entire city was planned, organized, and built in a single generation.

Uxmal, located in the northwest Puuc region of the Yucatan, is considered to be one of the most significant of all Maya cities. Architecturally, Uxmal has a remarkably intact center acropolis, and some of the most ornate architecture found anywhere in Mesoamerica.

This picture was taken inside the Casa del Gobernador at Uxmal. Most Maya buildings feature corbelled vaulted ceilings, which tend to be steep and create relatively little space. This structure features dozens of small rooms and quarters for the rulers of this late-classic city.

This is El Cuartel at La Quemada in Zacatecas, Mexico. This structure may have served as a residence for the ruler of this outpost. The remains of a burned ceiling suggest this site was intentionally and violently destroyed.

This picture was taken at La Quemada, one of the northern most pyramid sites in Mesoamerica. The origins of this classic-era acropolis are still being debated by archaeologists, but nearly all agree that it once served as a fortress.

2 MONKEYS.

A shout out to my hairdresser, Hannah Huyhn. An artisan who spins straw into gold. I believe there are few things more quintessentially middle American at Christmastime than sitting in a salon listening to George Michael and Mariah Carey interspersed with local gossip. #hannahshairsalon #christmastraditions #middleamerica

Earlier job as beach boy! 😂... not... 🌊🌴☀️ #meerweh #throwback
