I'm still smiling from last Saturday's farmers market...so much vibrant color in these peppers. Bell peppers are high in vitamin C, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), and vitamin B6. Let’s get one thing straight. Blood tests are good and necessary, but the FEW markers that the GP runs in your annual physical (ESPECIALLY if you are a WELL patient), are pretty much USELESS for wellness optimization. You have to really have something going on for the basics to be off.
The problem with this is that patients are FALSELY assuming this basic panel “normal” blood test as meaning they are in great health.

Functional medicine tests I send my patients for include stool, urine and the fancy blood markers that show deficiencies and dysfunctions far before they would show up on our annual blood panel.

Magnesium salt and bubbly bath, ahhhhhhhh. It’d been well over a year and oh how I missed it. Well, parts of it. I have a couple #MTHFR mutations which makes it hard for my body to methylate on it’s own so things like baths and saunas help, but don’t always feel so good as they’re helping to process toxins. But they feel great at the beginning and after! (Do any MTHFRs out there relate?) And something I’m not at all mixed feelings about —- bubbles. Just dee-frickin-lightful. Hope your night’s the same 😘

Here is some info about why I don’t take folic acid (which is synthetic 💊 and not natural 🌿 in any capacity). 👀 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 While the body converts some synthetic folic acid to folate, it has a limited capacity to do so. A lot of the remaining folic acid that is not converted then circulates in the blood and tissues in an  unmodified form. It has the potential to disrupt normal folate metabolism and there is substantial evidence that it can even promote cancer growth.

Also, synthetic folic acid can disrupt the actions of natural folate. And natural folate  has a greater capability to bind to folate receptors on our cells. This, in turn, could result in folic acid being preferentially transported into normal healthy cells instead of natural folate. Once inside the cell, folic acid could then compete with natural folates for other binding sites, preventing them from functioning properly and potentially causing changes in normal gene expression or cell growth rates.

This is just a very brief and basic explanation.  And many many people with autoimmune diseases have MTHFR and cannot convert the synthetic folic acid.

Definition of Methylation: the biochemical process of that involves the attachment of a single carbon methyl group to a substrate. Methylation occurs in many biochemical pathways, including phase II detoxification, immune function, and maintaining DNA. Methylation works as an epigenetic control mechanism, as methylation of DNA often acts to repress gene transcription. (definition from IFM)

Methylation is essential for the function of almost all of your body’s systems. It occurs billions of times per second. Methylation helps repair your DNA,  controls homocysteine (can damage blood vessels); helps recycle molecules needed for detoxification;  helps with mood,  keeps inflammation in check. Methylation influences multiple mechanisms in the body by adding and subtracting methyl groups. The MTHFR  enzyme ( methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase)  is used to carry out these methylation processes. If this enzymes isnt working propoerly, health issues may follow. Neurotransmitters influencing our mood, sleep patterns and mental functioning are balanced by methylation.

When should you consider methylation for your patients?  miscarriage infertility, neural tube defects, autism, ADD, anxiety, GI issues, IBS,  mood, insomnia, menstrual issues, testosterone, CVD, hypertension, weight gain, depression, cognition, dementia, neuropathy, cancers. MTHFR POLYMORPHISM
•
Did you know that a genetic mutation may be contributing to your depressive symptoms?
•
MTHFR starts for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. It’s an enzyme!!
•
This enzyme converts folic acid or folate to its biologically active form (5-MTHF). •
•
The biologically active form is need for homocysteine conversion. •
•
Homocysteine is an amino acid (protein building block) that is converted from methionine (another amino acid). •
•
The homocysteine is then converted to cysteine or back to methionine with the assistance of vitamin B6 and B12 and B9 (folate). •
•
A polymorphism results in less biologically active folate and this results in a decrease in homocysteine conversion and thus increased homocysteine levels. •
•
If you are a carrier, you may be at increased risk for heart attack, stroke, blood clots, miscarriages, depression and other significant health risks. •
•
You can take a genetic test to determine whether you have a MTHFR polymorphism. •
•
Alternatively, having your homocysteine levels checked may serve as a good indicator. (Less than 13mmol is optimal, anything higher than 60mmol may indicate you carry several mutated gene copies). •
•
Taking ACTIVE B vitamins may significantly help reduce homocysteine levels. •
•
Ensure your B complex is active: folate (written as 5-MTHF), B6 (written as P-5-P) and B12 (as methylcobalamin). (Yes, this is important because it’s a conversion issue!)

What better than a day when I hear from a patient who just found out that HPV is now negative, another with MTHFR whose baby is due in a few days, and yet another whose homocysteine dropped from 15 to 8.

And a patient who resolved imbalanced gut bacteria a few months back (without antibiotics), then stopped taking birth control pills so she could give her body a chance to balance her hormones, and called to tell me thank you for helping her feel empowered about her body and her health.
_
I'm just so proud of my patients. 
_
How did they do it?
_
They did it by finding out what was stressing their bodies - including food sensitivities, toxins, infections, and synthetic hormones - and removing them. 
_
Then they measured their cortisol throughout the day, adrenaline and neurotransmitters, and rebalanced them using nutrients and herbs. 
_
They found out about leaky gut and imbalances in gut bacteria, and addressed them using herbs and my gut balancing protocol. 
_
They restored nutrients, balanced blood sugar, and dropped inflammation. 
_
From there, it became a lot easier to achieve their health goals, whether that be getting rid of a chronic viral infection, getting pregnant, optimizing methylation, improving energy, mood, sleep, skin, and simply feeling more themselves again.

My favourite Green Soup. If you ever feel like you've been over indulging, this soup will quickly set you back on the straight and narrow. Sauté red onion and loads of garlic in olive oil and a little salt for 20 mins on a very low heat, this helps bring out the natural sweetness which is key to the final flavour. Add armfuls of dark green leafy veg (black kale, chard and spinach for example) and enough stock or hot water to come halfway up the veggies, simmer gently until the veg are cooked and then blend. Season and add a squeeze of lemon juice. Top with toasted seeds, seaweed, fresh herbs, crispy tofu or shredded chicken. I encourage my clients to eat a portion of dark green leafy veg (DGLV) every day. They are true 'superfoods' - providing key nutrients like iron, magnesium, folate, antioxidants (vit C and beta carotene), vitamin K, essential fats, and also support processes like methylation, detoxification, hormone balance. When your face shape keeps changing. And my glasses are too big for my face! 😃👓 These are wins. But even more I feel well. My body is strong. I like how my body moves. How my knees are free of ache. How my mind is clear. The fog is gone. The anxious worries have faded.

Day 13: @slenderella_usa 30 GUT CHALLENGE (LONG POST ALERT-about to geek out on science!!!) • Last minute dinner 🥘 -grilled chicken lettuce wrap with turmeric, black pepper, and @wildbrine dill and garlic sauerkraut. Tastes really good but I don’t have any AVOCADO 🥑 to go with it!!! (I ran out!) —— It’s been a stressful week. Like it has been...every week since I can remember . See that @slenderella_usa bliss in the background? That’s for my mood and anxiety. I have ups and downs just like a lot of people and I know it’s genetic because I tested my MTHFR gene years ago and I found out this gene really causes me to function in a really different way. Because of this gene mutation, I have a harder time reducing inflammation in my body. (I also have a positive ANA test for an autoimmune disorder too!!) The MTHFR gene is involved in the methylation cycle which occurs in our liver. This very important gene helps detoxification of the body, increases production of ATP (our body’s main currency of energy), and even helps regulate the production of neurotransmitters like Serotonin and Dopamine. The SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) and TMG (trimethylglycine) in my mood supplement helps me when I’m stressing out that day.  The biggest issue with me is anxiety. If I eat clean and eat lots of anti-inflammation foods like turmeric, avocados, and broccoli 🥦, I know all the sulfur in those foods help my liver manage my methylation cycle better so I don’t have as much joint or low back pain. But unfortunately, my food might not be enough. That’s why I have to supplement. It’s in my genes.

Subcutaneous B12 injections... These allow B12 to be slowly released into your body, unlike IM injections which are an immediate boost. Injections bypass the gut which can be helpful for people with poor gut health and absorption. 👍🏼
B12 is essential for ENERGY metabolism, & normal myelin shealth. Deficiency can contribute to NERVE and spinal cord degeneration.
Signs can be Dementia, ataxia (falling over) NUMBNESS, weakness in peripheral nerves, tingling, pins and needles, DEPRESSION, mental changes, memory loss, sleepiness  developmental delay and/or autistic behaviour.
In fact Dr Neubrander uses B12 injections as part of a protocol to treat Autistic children. 👌
When was the last time you had your B12 levels checked?
Unfortunately the reference range in Australia is too low. The minimum level here is 135 pmol/L other countries like Japan have 369 pmol/L as their minimum. Ideally you want your B12 to be OVER 500 pmol/L !! Doctor's in Australia are not likely to pick up low levels until it is VERY low!
People on a vegan diet are at risk of low levels, as well as ELDERLY, people taking ANTACIDS, genetics - MTRR, FUT2, MMAB, MUT, people on chemo... also ALCOHOL increases the excretion of B12, so a LOT of us are at risk of low B12 😉
If you don't TEST how do you know? Maybe you could be feeling a LOT better than you are now. ✌
