Most commonly noted is its role in the body’s ability to detoxify. Approximately 15% of the population has a methylation deficit and poor ability to detoxify, and this number goes up to 54% with vaccinations. Of those with autism, 85% are known to have reduced methylation.

When a person who is genetically susceptible and has a strong demand for the body’s master antioxidant glutathione, such as after a vaccine is given, and the glutathione level drops low enough, the sulfur metabolism becomes disrupted. The methylation cycle (part of the sulfur metabolism or detoxification) can become partially blocked and deplete some or all of several important sulfur containing metabolites including S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAMe), cysteine, glutathione, taurine, and sulfate. This can create such a weakening in the system that it allows disease to develop.

In autism, the drop in the SAMe part of methylation appears to be a significant part of the problem with normal brain development.

We love colorful food at Almeda! This meal is food technology at it's best. Chickpeas & lentils are a great plant based source of protein with ph balancing properties, cucumbers for natural hydration, radishes have folate, fiber, riboflavin and potassium, as well as good amounts of copper, vitamin B6, magnesium, manganese and calcium which are important for methylation, asparagus for one of my fav amino acids asparagine along with healthy fats & fiber from the beloved avocado. B12 DEFICIENCY & ANEMIA | You may be more likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiency if you have:
• Atrophic gastritis, in which your stomach lining has thinned
• Pernicious anemia, an autoimmune condition which makes it hard for your body to absorb vitamin B12
• Conditions that affect your small intestine, such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, bacterial growth, or a parasite
• Immune system disorders, such as Graves' disease or lupus

Probiotic supplementation is not something to try arbitrarily. The most beneficial one for *you* depends on what *your* gut is doing and what it needs. Some people have a low overall count of the good bacteria and simply need more. Others have LOTS of good bacteria, but not enough variety of different good bacteria. So, the variety of strains and total count you should use really depends on what’s shown in a stool test that you take.

But, back to the purpose of probiotics: nobody has a perfect microbiome. There’s always some way you’ll need to be working on it. Once you’ve done a stool test or two and can see how your gut responds to different foods and supplements, you can better decide how to establish a maintenance probiotic schedule, which ideally, should be rotated. Probiotics help balance out the whole microbiome to yield proper digestion, hormone, and organic acid function. The gut really is the core of most metabolic functions, so you have to take good care of it! That’s why I had more gut related supplements in the top 10 posts than any other type!😏

One important thing I want to share is how beneficial a folate-rich diet is. We need 2-3 servings at least - if you're a poor methylator you may benefit from more. One serving is 100 grams so we need between 200 and 300 grams per day of:

✅Cooked vegetables. Fresh and local is important.  Use the water that you cook them in.

✅Double the amount if you are measuring raw vegetables.
.
✅Wash veggies before cutting, blending.
.
✅Folate degrades in frozen veggies so avoid any freezing or frozen products.

✅Liver can be weighed before cooking.
.
✅Legumes need to be soaked, rinsed and then cooked.

✅Buying sprouted legumes (like the chickpeas in the picture) and pressure cooking speeds the process.

✅Some people can’t tolerate legumes even if they are prepared in these ways.

I’ve been back and forth pondering over how to include so much important info, all I’ve researched, read and learnt over years into one little post, I can’t. It’s literally impossible. So I’m planning a series of posts covering the main topics and facts coming under the MTHFR genetic variation.
Today I’ll be posting on my story starting with some simple facts (nothing head spinning) that are so crucial to be aware of, how to go forward with tests, some easy and effective nutritional supports you can switch up and implement from today going forward. Then we will delve in to some thorough in-depth, more topic focused empowering information over the coming weeks.

The Baby & Me 2 is the one I would choose as it is created with methylated forms of B Vitamins and suitable for those with an MTHFR mutation. Although I believe we should all go straight for the methylated version regardless of wether or not a mutation is present. This product however does not contain calcium or magnesium so you may want to supplement those additionally. What other prenatals do you suggest to try next?

Day 3 of our reset week. Bulletproof coffee for ‚breakfast‘ to keep the metabolism going, brain alertness high and hormones happy. 
Lunch: a large serving of lightly cooked cruciferous veggies (raw can cause problems in people with ‚mutations‘ (SNP) in the CBS genes or thyroid issues) for liver detox and hormone balancing support. Added plenty of leafy greens for methylation (turns off ‚bad genes‘, reduces homocysteine, a substance that can cause trouble in the cardiovascular system, and much more). Of course lots of filtered water and herbal teas (away from meals) to keep up hydration, and it also keeps you feeling fuller.
Dinner: bone broth. 
Note there isn’t much protein in this day‘s menu, other than small amounts in the cruciferous vegetables. This allows mTOR to calm down, which is a substance triggered by protein, especially dairy. mTOR is something we want to cycle in and out of- it is needed for muscle growth, but we want to go low periodically as in excess it can also stimulate cancer cell growth. Furthermore, only if mTOR is low can we go into that cellular clean-up mode called ‚autophagy‘. 🍀👩🏼‍⚕️

Just because you have a genetic SNP doesn't mean that you are going to suffer the consequences of that mutation.  Does it increase your chances that you will have an issue?  Yep.  But increasing chances doesn’t mean it's an automatic thing.⠀

I run genetic tests with certain patients who I believe may be suffering from something more severe than just a single mutation somewhere.  And when I do, I always run a large genetic profile to try and understand how things might actually be playing out on the field, AKA in the entire body.  One mutation could counteract another mutation within the methyl cycle, resulting in a normal clinical presentation.  If we didn't look at all of them we might be led to falsely assume something that isn't actually true, and then we're just chasing symptoms at this point.⠀
