It’s absolutely no surprise that my mood boards for #slowfashionoctober are full of #knits (being a #knitter ) and neutrals. The palettes represent the majority of the color collections on my Pinterest. I’m a boot girl through and through, and after yearning for a pair of excellent rain boots, something I don’t want thrifted, I finally ordered a pair. Flowy dresses with boxy sweaters and scarves and rain boots is my minds eye perfect fall/winter outfit and I’m nearly there. Like, I went on a mission to start filling my closet with #dressesandboots and knits that can mix and match last year.
I really want to sew my own dresses. I have a machine, but I think I have this old story from my mom in the back of my head, when I was so terrible at sewing as a teen, that I just don’t have the patience for it. So it’s time to change the story. If I have the patience to knit a perfect Tensile Pullover, can I not make at least one Metamorphic Dress?? #metamorphicdress << go look!!!
Slow fashion means so many things to me, from understanding where my clothes are made, who makes them, how we #recycleyourclothes and get rid of them ... to how they make us feel, how we can play big or small depending on what we wear on the outside, and how we try to satisfy feelings with “retail therapy”. (PS, I find pinning beautiful patterns has almost the same dopamine hit...and then I go knit).
I’m so late in this post because the depth of my goals and thoughts are hard to wade through. I don’t want to buy anymore clothes for at least six months. Unless it’s #memade , nothing gets added to my #slowwardrobe . This includes kicks.
Slow Fashion also feeds into my desire of looking at how the yarn I use is made, by whom, and where. I’m gravitating towards makers thinking about sustainability, and I’m thinking about the longevity of my knits, rather than the price of yarn. I imagine I’ll feel the same about fabrics once I become an amateur sewing type person.
This weeks prompt was to sort your closet into Yes No Maybe. That’ll wait a week or two on my end, but if this intrigues you, I encourage you to follow @slowfashionoctober - the stories are especially thought provoking.
Styling: I had fun playing "dress-up" today!
Shown are two different tops made using the #morningglorytop free pattern by @sarkirsten with added waist ties.
First pics shown with a self-drafted skirt that is one of my favorites after many years💗. Second pic is another Morning Glory top, paired different ways with my beloved #metamorphicdress (Pattern by @sewliberated ) Please excuse my dippy poses...I generally feel like an idiot in front of the camera. But I loved playing dress up with the fun, colorful clothes that I have been filling my closet with lately💗💜💙.
It’s exciting (and frustrating) to be a beginner again. I’m going to do this thing no matter how many times it takes, no matter how many YouTube videos I have to watch, or how many questions I have to ask the ladies at the fabric store. Yesterday I learned about easy pattern paper from the ladies at the store. Giving that a go. #metamorphicdress#beingabeginner#neverquit#nevertoooldtolearn
All of the incredible fabric and pattern designs created by the incredible artists in this community are so inspiring to me, and I love combining them to plan projects.⠀
But, there is never enough time to sew all the projects I plan, so it is a super good thing that I have all of you to share the inspiration with. ⠀
I am sending out an email tomorrow with some of my most very exciting plans. If you would like some inspiration I would love to send it to you, too. Just tap the link in my profile to make sure I have your name and email address on my list.
I love using reclaimed and vintage fabric but when I spotted this beautiful Japanese cotton double gauze for half price at @thedrapery I couldn’t help myself! It is so soft and lovely it will be like wearing a marshmallow ☁️ I have three whole meters and it’s so wide! I’m thinking #gatheredskirtforallages , a #metamorphicdress , and maybe if I’m very careful there will be enough for an #alicetop . Oh I do love sewing for summer!!
8 months to find her fabric, a day to cut her pattern, several afternoons at the machine, a day undoing stitches after she missed a step, back at the machine, project complete, heart full. #homeschoolcurriculum by @sewliberated #metamorphicdress#pbh
So excited to share with you pictures of the #metamorphicdress I finished sewing last night. The pattern is by @sewliberated and what a great pattern! I even learned how to sew using the burrito method - thanks so much for the tutorial!
I had originally used gauze fabric to make this dress and ran into so many issues with it, since the weave is so lose. It was so frustrating that I ended up just abandoning that one alltogether. I learned that fabric matters a lot when you’re sewing, so for the second one, I opted for a Robert Kaufman Essex linen i got from @fabricoutlet and @cottonandsteel Moonrise fabric I got from @stonemountainfabric. And OMG, I’m in love! The fabric combo gives the dress a little puffiness that makes me feel like a little princess!
Of course, I had to add a little bit of me in the dress so check out the pictures for the pockets! The @cottonandsteel fabric selvage had the “be a dreamer” tag so I HAD to use it! And the lining dress pockets has little black and white tulips (another @cottonandsteel fabric). Finished the hems with a sewing stitch 19 on my Brother machine (because who said I have to only use straight lines? 😂😂😂).
Oh and check out the pics with the belt on! Makes it looks so much more dressed up! So it’s like 4 dresses in one really ☺️☺️☺️.
Finished this dress in time for my trip to LA today! And to test it, wore it already today to take the doggie out for a walk.
Anyway, silly dress for a silly girl!
I made a new dress! Bodice based off of the #scouttee with heavy modifications and the skirt is the underskirt from the #metamorphicdress#sewistsofinstagram I’d like to start experimenting with more fitted patterns now. Any suggestions? I’ve done zippers before but not successfully.
Handwork from these last two weeks. Knitting @sarahcswett’s Magic Medium Pullover in Mondial Biolana. The second of these for my eldest. Sewn the #metamorphicdress for myself from @sewliberated along with the #esmedress from @lottajansdotter. Still have hems to hand sew to finish Esme. Spinning Bond fleece from Shiloh Wool. Along with bagging mudbrick walls...#muddieinthevalley
Successful dying fabric day! Got pretty nill done in house work, but that’s ok. Brown knit is destined to be a #stasiadress gray linen is for #metamorphicdress . Can you believe the brown started its life as a terrible shade of purple. Pretty impressed with Rit color remover and dye. The linen started out as a light cream.
Fast peek of a predominately (though not exclusively) self sewn slow fashion wardrobe. #slowfashionoctober
In order from L to R: Barn Sweater from @taprootmag, fast fashion cardigan that I’ve worn for years, Ogden cami turned dress, @prairieunderground dress, #endlesssummertunic by @avfkw using @dharmatradingco linen dyed with indigo, #washidress by @madebyrae in pumpkin colored linen, #metamorphicdress by @sewliberated, fast fashion top, fast fashion sweater that I love, #esmedress made into a top, @ramblerswayfarm wool t-shirt, #fentop by @fancytigercrafts using @consciousclothing linen by the yard, and #endlesssummertunic in avocado dyed raw silk. All my favorite pieces!
I’ve been sidelined from knitting because of #tenniselbow I’m so bummed..... time to take up a new hobby I guess. I joined the #summersewalong with high hopes of making the #metamorphicdress .... better late than never. I cut out my #bodice tonight. Only three months late ;)
We just ordered a bunch of awesome @sewliberated patterns! How great does @sew_schick look in her #metamorphicdress made with Robert Kaufman Brussels Washer Linen?! She's always sewing up awesome stuff! Thanks for tagging #confidentmaker ! ⠀

For @make_re.do_mend Voilà, the Metamorphic Dress in Sarah Kay style 😁 I loved Sarah Kay when I was a little girl... Still playing dressing up games 30 years later..... 😉🌻 #sewliberated#sarahkay#metamorphicdress @sewliberated
I don't wear handmade clothing every day. But I do only purchase/thrift clothing I absolutely adore. It's an extremely high bar. It keeps my consumption WAY down, and this feels right both in terms of kindness to the environment and to myself. What guides you in making/curating a closet you love? #slowfashionoctober starts tomorrow. 💙
Sewed almost all of a Metamorphic dress today! Going to hem and clip threads tonight 😄 Such a fun pattern. Only changes were to slope the shoulders a bit and bring in the sides 1/2” on the size 6. #flâneusesews
I love my life. Got to spend some time with my friend @yoliturtlesque . We went to the river and also to @318coffeehouse . Beautiful weather and a smorgasbord of gelato to choose from. I got to wear all my #memade clothes. A #comfortfadecardi , #metamorphicdress and #pantsno2 leggings.
Gypsum skirt view b (sort of). This is the skirt from the first metamorphic dress I made. It’s a linen blend from Joann’s and was just too heavy in two layers. I took the waistband and pocket pieces from the gypsum and made it work with the skirt pieces I had. They don’t really line up, so I put two pleats in the front and back. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I love the waistband pockets. They’re so sturdy and don’t flop around at all. #sewing#gypsumskirt#metamorphicdress#imakemyclothes#imakemyownclothes
#metamorphicdress by @sewliberated is my third go on this pattern. Made summer 2018 from linen rayon blend. Modifications included lengthening he bodice and shortening the skirt by two inches, and adding a tie to sinch the back. the fabric is relaxing beautifully after several washes. Size 14.
#metamorphicdress by @sewliberated was made in the summer of 2018. Meant to be a wearable muslin with a cheap poly cotton blend from fabric land. It's pilling quite a bit, but I wear it regardless. Cut a size 14 I believe with no modifications.
Completely loving my #metamorphicdress dress and all the lovelyness of fall layering!!! Wearing it all the ways! Can’t wait to get back to the sewing machine and finish my other projects! I have not bought a single piece of clothing this year, aside from bras and undies ya’ll! It’s a good feeling! But I’m running lows on t’s, but also on my confidence in sewing knits...but I’ll get there. #nakuspsews#imakemyownclothes#maker
I know I already shared this #metamorphicdress I recently finished, but I forgot to add the most important detail...it is reversible! It's made out of lightweight linen I found for 7.00 a yard at #mardensinmaine . It is super comfortable and I feel like it is the only thing I would need to pack for a weekend away. #sewliberated#sewistsofinstagram
Variation on the Metamorphic dress. I didn’t have enough fabric for the full dress, so I turned the bodice into an a-line dress and added the undulating hem from the skirt (flipped upside down at the back). .......realised halfway through that the fabric was likely to shrink (and it did), so I separated the two layers. #metamorphicdress @sewliberated #sewliberated#sedimentarycapsule
Penny and I went modeling for my new #metamorphicdress and she totally stole the show! Special thanks again to @urbanspools for helping me with the pattern paper and thread decisions! @kyla__lopez you’re up! #sewliberated
My next project...after seeing the #metamorphicdress @annika_zwirn made every day when when walking into @firecrackerfabrics I just had to make my own...love the layering possibilities with this one. I spent forever making a fabric selection, super hard to pick just one combination when there were so many options I loved❤️....luckily, as I told @southatlanticstitch I can just make another one! This dress is a reversible dress, however I plan to only wear it with the cotton/flax underneath and the darker fabric on top #nextsewingproject#sewliberatedpatterns
Ta-dah! Our shop sample Metamorphic Dress, made up in our Diamond Spot Jaipur Block Printed Cotton and Railroad 6 oz Denim. I made a size 14 (and if making it for myself, would go down a size), true to pattern, and it was a fun and interesting make. It’s shorter than I expected so anyone tallish would probably want to add some length to the skirts. And although the Railroad Denim is fairly light, I’d go even lighter for a Spring version - two layers of the block printed cottons or khadis would be perfect 👌🏻 #metamorphicdress#sewliberated#fibresmith
Spent the weekend in Grand Marais with my bestie @northerngrants. We managed to make metamorphic dresses - pattern by @sewliberated. Mine was made from an old duvet cover so I’ve been calling it my bedamorphic dress 😂. I only managed to knit a few stitches but totally worth it.
I’ve been enjoying the slightly more relaxed pace since arriving home from @thecraftsessions last week. With no major event looming, I’m loving the luxury of a bit of much needed creative play. I sewed a shop sample of the #sewliberated Metamorphic Dress yesterday (will post full pics and details when I get it on the mannequin) and realised I really need a new pincushion so did a little freeform, sashiko stitching on linen last night with Temaricious hand dyed threads. This scrap will hopefully become a lovely little triangular pincushion - maybe even today 😊 #metamorphicdress#temaricious#blockprintedfabric#sashikostitching
Just one of many things I love about @squamlove - the chance to really connect with creative women of all ages. (Isn't my friend Hazel resplendent?!) This is how we are meant to exist in community. To feel understood for where we have been and where we are, and to witness the richness of life in our futures. 💚 May my smile lines get more and more happy with all the conversation and laughter.
Wearing: Squam shirt and necklace made by my friend @untoldimprint - long necklace crafted by my friend @agambroult . (Over a #metamorphicdress .)
Loving this modified #metamorphicdress - it's a single layer (not reversible). Sewn in size 16 with petite mods: shortened shoulders 2" & skirt hem 1". Fabric is #cottonandsteel "Sleep Tight" cotton from @missouriquiltco & I worry the print is a bit youthful, but I love it & am getting over that! Happy accident was a patch pocket turned sideways, so I celebrated by adding the selvedge to the inner pocket fold (makes me smile every time I use the pocket). Used yellow bias binding around neck & dark grey around arms. I think the fab @sewliberated created this pattern for the wearer to layer, so the arm holes are oversized & I like that!
Finally cut, sewed and finished my second #metamorphicdress , using the fabric I always intended to make it with. It’s a copy of Meg’s over @sewliberated (who is also the talented designer of this pattern) because it was love at first sight. Brick linen from a Dutch online fabric shop and ikat from Etsy. I foresee much wear!
Modifications from my first wearable muslin were to size down a size and to make inseam pockets for both inner and outer dresses. #littlefieldbirch#slowfashion#linen#ikat#handmadewardrobe#indiesewing#lifeofamaker
My #metamorphicdress by @sewliberated It’s reversible, but the pink cotton lawn is a bit too sheer and the lovely #riflepaperco rayon shows through when the pink side is on top. So, realistically, I don’t think I’d ever wear the pink on top which is a shame because that’s the side with inseam pockets!! I love the way this dress feels when wearing it, but the fit is a bit off in the bodice. I went up a size to accommodate my boobs, but that made the shoulders, neck and underarms a bit too gape-y. Thanks to @tijerashomesewn for making such a perfect metamorphic dress months ago. Fabric from @stonemountainfabric #memadeeveryday#handmadewardrobe#selfsewnwardrobe
